I have always been bothered to people jumping to racism as an explanation for everything when it is better explained by something else, and insisting it is racist prevents dealing with the real problem. In this instance I think it was a terminal case of Asshole Cop Syndrome, which is more important to eliminate. Who cares if a cop is racist and assumes someones credit score based on their skin color. I am willing to bet there are a high percentage of KKK members that would have got off his neck once he became non-responsive, but this cop didn’t.

I didn’t say it did. I am saying that the officer (the video is pretty self-explanatory) is culpable for the death of that man. He should be charged with Manslaughter and face a jury of his peers. If something comes out in the trial that justifies his actions I will withdraw and correct myself. But it appears that this cop was a douchebag, should never have been a cop, and that he was responsible for the man dying. The fact that the man has/had trouble with drugs or a chest infection HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. He didn’t deserve to die.
First let me state emphatically that the cop was wrong in what he did.
Second, I saw the vid. The cop had his knee on the back/side of the mans neck, he didn’t have his weight on it.
Floyd obviously didn’t asphyxiate. He repeatedly complained “I can’t breathe!” which wasn’t true, because if you can’t breathe, then you can’t say anything. He was in some sort of distress and the cop should have reacted accordingly, but can you blame him for not believing that the man couldn’t breathe?
Others have suggested the cop blocked his carotid artery that supplies blood to the brain, but the video clearly shows his knee was nowhere near. Besides there are two, one on either side of the voice box. One is all that’s needed to keep the brain alive.
Arteriosclerotic heart disease, described as multifocal, severe, hypertensive heart disease with a clinical history of hypertension and atherosclerotic narrowing. Maybe it was the way he was lying that had an effect on his heart, made him feel like he couldn’t breathe. That plus the drugs. Makes more sense that the knee on the neck having any effect.
So would he still be alive? Maybe, maybe not. The only honest answer is we can’t say.

If you can’t breathe you can’t say anything is BS. It’s hard to talk, but not impossible — until a certain point. I have asthma and COPD. I’ve been in situations in which I couldn’t breathe and in fact thought I would die. You HAVE to try to talk, as you know your life depends on somebody hearing you.
He’s dead. There’s no way to test your premise now. There’s also no proof yet apparent that the police officers involved intended to kill him. All that we have heard so far only offers that manslaughter may be a just conviction. That’s why we are supposed to wait for a thorough investigation and the presentation of the results thereof in a court operating on rules. That’s no fun, but it’s a process that has some merit.
If the dead guy was white, who would care this much? Is a making your judgement about an individual you don’t know based on a presumption that their race determines how they act, how they think, racism? Or is racism “being white”?

You know, COVID-19 has a nasty habit of reducing oxygenation, and Floyd could easily have desaturated just from being face down on the ground. It might not take much, depending on his condition. Then after de-satting his heart packed up. Very believable.
But I agree that the cop with the knee on his neck was definitely not helping anything. I’m not a fan of their procedures. Eight minutes? Nope, sorry, not acceptable. Being summarily fired and then charged with manslaughter is entirely fair. Because that’s -exactly- what would happen to anyone who was not a cop.

That’s a lot of drugs in Floyd’s system. I don’t see how they think they will get a 2nd deg murder charge past a half way decent defence lawyer. I saw online, somewhere, what was purported to be a copy of the PD procedure for subduing someone resisting arrest. The use of the knee on the back/neck area was in there. Now, the defence just has to point at that and say that the use of force was applied, but due to the drugs and such the officer didn’t expect him to die. Yes, the officer kept his knee there too long. Yes, I am sure he caused his death because of it. No, I’m not a lawyer, but some common sense here says you charge what you can win, not what the media and the raving mob wants you to charge.
Involuntary manslaughter on the other hand, that would stick as the other officers (at least one) wanted to roll Floyd on his side and Chauvin didn’t let up pressure or listen to them/him. I also can’t see how the other 3 officers will get any kind of murder or manslaughter charges, at least one of them said something, and that counts toward motive and defence. It is all a big ball of crap, but the screaming media will not be happy unless they hang all four officers, regardless of anything that happened.
Keith Ellison has charged 2nd degree murder, a raise from the original 3rd degree murder. 3rd degree was unwinnable due to some technical definitions in the statute, but 2nd degree may be just as unwinnable due to the need to prove intent. There’s speculation over at the Legal Insurrection blog that Ellison has deliberately raised the charge to a level he can’t win because he wants an acquittal – that’s guaranteed to set off another round of riots.

Not sure if these upgraded charges are replacements for the old ones, or in addition to them, as most often the US courts involve prosecutors throwing spaghetti at the wall and seeing what sticks.
I’ve seen that and it’s a good point. It’s really hard to imagine ellison as the calm voice of reason in this situation despite his pose. It’s a major crisis to be used for the cause.

The fentanyl certainly contributed to his death. The officers were heard on a video discussing what they needed to do to keep him alive.
The prosecutor is simply going to point out that Floyd was in distress and the officers did nothing. Criminal negligence at least.
