Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Gotta love it! Great story.
Boys playing against men.
“There is strong; then there is olde man strong” Glacierman
You traitor! If somebody were to sabotage your Zamboni, my guess it would be Kyle Clifford! The rest of the team would be sipping their lattes, cajoling, and chillin’ on Itunes!
(I remember 1967…… I had no idea the agony would last a lifetime!)
The Maple Laughs? They’re still in the NHL? And, like Snagglepuss, I remember the last time Tronna won the Stanley Cup…. nearly 3 generations ago.
I’ll help……
It was 53 years ago…1967.

Jersey’s are ugly.
Me thinks they should move back to Hartford.

Remember a player’s quip when Vancouver brought out the Big V,
“Last year we played like clowns so this year management decided we should look the part”
Now that was ‘ugly’!
It’s funny you mention that. After looking up from my applique project and noticing the red splotches on the Hurricane’s helmets, I made the enquire to hubby…what are those? He explained they were the hurricane swirl. My first thought was that they were some sort of reflectors/lights (don’t ask me, just jumped to what was familiar to me). I then exclaimed that all helmets could have a light that gets lit up when a player scores a goal! Does anyone else see this as ingenious? Hubby chuckled, but I think it was more at me than the idea.
Being a life long Leafs hater I think that this embarrassment looks good on them. I won’t crow about it much, however, as my team has served up plenty of embarrassment since they won the Cup in ’89.
Kudos to Mr. Ayres and to the Hurricanes.
I loved those Vancouver V jerseys. They were certainly ugly but there was character to them. I think team management went out of their way in 1981 to sign the homeliest players in the league to wear them. Tiger Williams, Harold Snepts, Garth Butcher, Doug Halward, Steamer Smyl. Or maybe they were decent looking guys made grotesque by the jerseys. I got caught up in the improbable 1982 run of a lunch bucket team that went all the way to the final wearing the Halloween V.
Well, as a long time Leaf fan, this was the lowest point I can think of. Maybe when Harold Ballard wanted Roger Neilson to go behind the bench with a paper bag on his head was worse, except nobody expected better of Ballard. And while I don’t remember 1967, my first game at Maple Leaf Garden’s had Jacques Plante starting in net for the Leafs, so I go pretty far back.
It is truly a great story. It does somewhat remind me of the time Toronto lost their goalie to injury and they called the retired Johnny Bower out of the stands to fill in for him.
As an Old leaf fan this does take the cake!
Congratulations to Ayres!
Maybe we could trade Brendan Shanahan and Kyle Dubas to the Zamboni Team for Ayres!!!!
All teams have a non-pro back-up goalie in case of emergency. At a recent Oilers – Flames game, the starting goalies for both teams were turfed following a fight between them. The Calgary back-up goalie, who was in the building but not dressed, was told to get his gear and be ready to play for EITHER team.
