A Toronto-based group called the Rainbow Railroad is bringing gay and lesbian couples to Toronto who are threatened in their own country. Last year they had over 1,300 requests but only managed 200 saves.

The interesting part is that once in Canada the Rainbow Railroad moves on (to help others) leaving these people to the kindness of the locals, including a small stipend from the government.
