It was our very conservative Socred government who started closing ’em down in the early 80’s and all governments of every stripe across Canada followed suit. 7. I wrote a paper in my university poli-sci class around 1989 about the deinstitutionalization push in Canada and the U.S. that started in the late 70’s. I wish I still had that paper. Much of the crap (literally) that is coming about now, especially in L.A., San Francisco, Seattle and Vancouver was an outcome of that movement.

   I wish USB drives existed around that time, or that my mom hadn’t thrown out my box of useless university papers.
