Slightly off topic, Boots … but I have always loved the ol’ cowboy song Ghost Riders. However, I must say that I believe The Doors inspired retake on that song was pure genius. Genius. Talent. Musically educated. We forget that very few ‘Rock Stars’ … came from “nothing”. Wrong! Most were exceptionally well educated musicians who mastered the basics, before launching into their own creative ‘takes’ on music. Manzarek was one of those highly skilled master craftsmen.
Oh, and I am Uuuuuuuge fan of the Fender Rhodes electric piano. That sound just hits me in the heart.
There was a guy in my grade school class who played ‘drums’ on his classroom desk. Said his older brother, who was a drummer, met the ‘Doors’ in LA. They were both huge fans.
We talked about the Doors’ Ed Sullivan appearance. Don’t know if the story was true or not- but I still love swede desert boots to this day and I was smitten with E.S. He was a sweet and cute kid that day, at least to me!

If you are familiar with Yuri Bezmenov, and The Berserker series by Fred Saberhagen, it does not take much imagination to understand our current political and social climate.
I rarely go downtown any more as I have no reason to.
The new look of the public library should go nicely with that ridiculous glass pyramid that was plunked into place as a replacement for the old city hall. While I’m at it, the control tower at the airport that was built a few years ago looks like a stack of grey pancakes. Uuuuuuuuuugly!
Unfortunately, government and municipal facilities aren’t the only eyesores in Edmonton. Earlier this year, I was passing through downtown as I was changing buses to go to a ham flea market on the north side of the city. I happened to notice that the building where the main branch of the Bank of Montreal used to be, just down the street from McDougall United Church has been replaced by a structure equally as horrid as the public library. The old bank branch was either empty or poorly used for more than 30 years, but its replacement is hardly an improvement.
As for the main branch of BMO, it was moved about a block north to where the Tegler building used to stand. That new facility was a palatial monstrosity that made poor use of space, particularly on the main floor. That building’s now gone, too after less than 35 years.
The branch moved in late 2017, but this time to the adjacent lot where Swedish Jewellers was before it went out of business a while back. The stores that were there have been torn down and–you guessed it–a new building put up in their place.
No wonder people abandon Edmonton’s downtown area at quitting time.
I would say Edmonton has the worst downtown of any major city in Canada. Even Regina’s downtown is more livelier than Edmonton and that’s saying something.
Compare that with Calgary, or, at least, the Calgary I knew when I lived and worked there over 40 years ago.
At that time, Cowtown was a commuter city. Come quitting time, the downtown area emptied almost immediately. Back then, I heard that roughly 20% of the population worked there, which probably inspired the joke that after 6 PM, one could shoot a cannon down Eighth Avenue and not hit anyone.
I haven’t been in downtown Calgary for more than 30 years, so I imagine that’s changed.
As for lousy downtown areas, Saskatoon during the early 1980s was nothing to be proud of. Then there was Vancouver. While I was a grad student at UBC 40 years ago, I found that area of the city was best avoided after sundown. Although Gastown had been cleaned up by then, I still found it rather creepy.
“as I was changing buses”
You actually take buses in Edmonton? Edmonton bus drivers were always ignorant dis-respectful swine. I almost had to give one a tune-up.

Edmonton bus drivers were always ignorant dis-respectful swine.
Not all of them, but a few are definitely certifiable and in need of psychiatric counselling…. and that’s before the bus leaves the stop. Mind you, I don’t entirely blame the drivers. Edmonton has long had the reputation of having the worst motorists in the country, something which seems to be a point of pride here for some strange reason.
It’s hard to imagine a more aggressively menacing building than this intergalactic war-wagon
I left out the mind fkcued quote … oops … no I didn’t.
“Aggressively menacing” … beautiful description! I am rather close to the professions that produce this sort of mind numbing dreck … and am embarrassed by what some of my colleagues produce in the name of “contemporary” architecture. Esp. when it achieves a Leed Platinum certification. Ugggh. Contemporary architecture has become the King with no Clothes. No one IN the profession DARES to criticize this CRAP. I’d be willing to bet a lot on these students being in STEM courses and not wasting on social basket weaving degrees.
They really should be added onto the Immigration numbers because they rarely leave. Each slot at University costs the Taxpayer over 60,000 per student over 4 years from 3 levels of government. That is the rolled up cost of maintaining and operating a university in Canada. That is without adding in the free healthcare. It is an industry and receives way more annual tax dollars than any corporate welfare. Most are not places of higher learning but are indoc centers and degree granting puppy mills now.
My son graduated from a well-known engineering college in January. When my friend (who is from Barbados originally) went to the design symposium, his first comment, after leaving the building, was “Where are all the white guys?”. Yes, universities have become addicted to serving everyone else but their own country (kind of like Trudeau).
I’d be Interetested in an age-based demographic study of Canada. I think many white people in Canada are passed their prime. Increasingly at many city venues I don’t see a lot of white people. I figure they must be gardening in their suburban homes or settled into a retirement residence somewhere, but downtown streets, malls, food courts, many work environments, etc.are noticibly non-white. It’s a significant change from 20 years ago.
Even more telling very few White babies, when I was young, it was common to see young couples out everywhere with young children and babies not so much now.
Young white couples seem to prefer dogs these days. I almost don’t blame them, but it does create a demographic problem.
Canada has way too many Universities and colleges necessary for what the Canadian Population can sustain or needs for our own people. Do a count some time you would be surprised. It is an Industry nothing to do with serving the Canadian population. It is a make work project for Socialists/Commies who produce nothing. For example PEI with a 140,000 population has 2 Universities. Why? Because it is another way to suck tax dollars without actual work. It costs Billions and Billions per year all on the taxpayer’s back.
Starting in the early 1960s, until about a decade later, there was an increase in construction on university campuses as the first baby boomers came. At my alma mater, the University of Alberta, most of the buildings I knew were put up during that time and some had been finished a year or two before I first set foot on campus.
A generation or two later, when going to university was no longer seen as a privilege, but as a right, more buildings went up. When I was an undergrad, the U of A could comfortably accommodate about 20,000 students. By the time I finished my Ph. D. nearly 20 years ago, that number had more than doubled. I took courses in which the students were packed into the lecture room like sardines.
During that time as well, a lot of smaller institutions, thanks to changes in provincial legislation, began calling themselves universities, many of which wouldn’t have qualified for accreditation. They started offering degrees at lower cost but also, in some cases, cheap in educational quality.
But, also, during that time, many Canadians decided not to go to university as they saw that their employment prospects after getting a degree were becoming dim. The result was all those buildings would have been close to empty if the universities relied on Canadian students.
The solution was to import them. While I was an undergrad more than 40 years ago, we had a number of foreign students, most of them from Hong Kong. That was because HK didn’t have a suitable university of its own at the time, so those people went overseas for their education. Since HK was still part of the Commonwealth, Canada was often a chosen country for those student to go to. But HK has its own university now, so the Chinese students now come mainly from the PRC.
It’s all about money. Without those foreign students, many of those universities would have to close their doors and all of those academics and administrators would actually have to go and work for a living, which wouldn’t be a bad thing.
As I’ve mentioned a number of times before on other threads, my university alma mater was, for all intents and purposes, owned by the Chinese while I was finishing my last degree about 20 years ago.
Earlier this morning, I spoke with a fellow tenant in my apartment building and he works at the uni. Apparently now, the ethnicity-du-jour is Korean.
As I sat through my son’s MATH Department graduation ceremony at UCLA … all I heard was a long stream of silverware names (sorry Old Bruin, but you know it’s true!). It appears as though there were precious few “white” kids … even Joos … who could pass the admission standards. So it was at least 90% Chinese.
We white people have become like the 3rd generation inheritors of our ancestors wealth … we are blowing our inheritance on fun, frivolity, and wasted college degrees. Wasted of course, unless you get a cushy $6-figure job working in the Deep State at the Federal, State or local government … or at a leftist-run Public Utility … courtesy of your ‘Public Policy’ degree.
The only proficient, white, mathematician I’ve recently read about … is named Jeffrey Epstein. Ugggh … this doesn’t bode well for our future.
There are still seats available for Groper’s $1500.00 a plate dinner in Toronto. Yes Great Leader burned jet fuel at taxpayer expense back to Ottawa to see his kids off to school. Hopefully they have those cardboard drinky thingees. And now Great Leader burns jet fuel at taxpayer expense to Toronto for a couple of days of fundraising dinners. Expect lots of adoration and praise from his loyal Unifor media. And of course his cabinet ministers are grabbing their government jets as they fan out across the country throwing money around.
Maxime Bernier calls teen climate activist ‘mentally unstable’
Better news is that the Post-Sun media wire service is re-printing the story in various newspapers, mostly in Western Canada. SDA readers — could you help passing the story around? — DM in Fredericton, NB.

How disappointing.
We already knew about the fact that the people in Alberta are always being stabbed in the back by the Feds …did you have to rub it in?
They used you as a patsy.
Don’t come bragging to us about your insignificant article.
Why would we help you to pass around this puff piece?
Take up a collection and send some money to every uni student in Alberta if you want to redeem yourself, professor.
Sorry. I’m just muckraking the federal government sleaze and unfairness that goes on. There’s a federal election coming up, and I prefer not to laze about. Don’t worry, your Justin Trudeau will win anyways. — David.
“Don’t worry, your Justin Trudeau will win anyways. — David.”
Justin Trudeau is not ‘mine’! Where did you get that idea?
Though much to our chagrin, he will win because everyone has been bought off and the Democrat American politicos will see to it.
I hope America swallows up this Commie country. I think it eventually will. We would deserve it.
Sorry! My mistake. I could have sworn you were a Trudeau supporter, and wanted Quebec and Atlantic Canada to get all the federal patronage money, much of which is forked over by Western Canada taxpayers. Again, my mistake. ,– David Murrell. .

You just exposed yourself for the Communist that you are. You just had to repeat yourself, after an apology, and then you go and rub it again about Alberta paying your freight in the Commie Maritimes.
Bet most people suspect you are a draft dodger – one of Pierre’s boys. And what’s with the throat clearing and wheezing prior to the Western rub? You’re incorrigible despite your statements. You’re a big feeling retired professor who writes puff pieces for the poofy Liberal press. Stop attacking Western Canada.
And your diversity is our strength story for today. National Post website reports on a Liberal MP who accuses Groper’s cabinet ministers of pandering to Sikh extremists. No mention of this in Trudeau’s other media outlets.
‘Good rednecks’: PPC candidates to decide who attends debate by holding a shootout
So you don’t have to hit the link
“We’re responsible gun owners and with that comes responsibility at the gun range,” Friesen said.
‘Guns don’t kill people’
Penteado said his views are “totally aligned” with the PPC in terms of gun control.
“We want to simplify gun policies,” he said. “We also want more safety courses available around Saskatchewan, around Canada, and more promotion about the good side of guns as a sport because all we see is very bad news about mass shootings, and this is a very bad image for gun owners and the guns themselves.”
Penteado said the PPC is “totally against” gun violence. He firmly believes mass shootings are not about the guns.
“Guns don’t kill people; what kills people is people. We need somebody to pull the trigger,” he said.
“It’s just like cars. When we have a car accident, we never blame the car, we blame the driver. Why are we blaming the gun, the object, when we have a mass shooting?”
Get back to us when England hands BoJo a thumping majority for Brexit, Ulster hands him a mandate to finish off the IRA and the gay untouchable who passes as the Teeshock of globalist southern Ireland—and both hand him a mandate to drag the pack of poofters and paedos who rule England on behalf of the globalists and bankers to the gallows.
I’m supposed to be concerned that the globalists in Westminster have a problem with England’s survival? Cornered rats have more dignity.
What do they even have on offer as a substitute? A communist Britain with Corbyn as Great Leader?
There’ll always be an England. What you see before you are the death throes of globalism in England—and not an hour too soon—on the 80th anniversary of the last attempt by a globalist stooge to destroy her.
Trudeau and company are sure handing out our money like drunken sailors using our money to get a head start.
There should be a law against blatant vote buying prior to writ being dropped.
Conservatives need to hope the NDP get a bounce but it doesn’t look too promising.
Feminist Trudeau sure likes to abuse women. Although his loyal media are avoiding the subject, the female Liberal MP in Quebec being pushed out, is still making news in some circles. The story at the Hill Times website say she was pushed out by the Liberal leadership so they could appoint their own choice, without a nomination process. The ousted MP is a Maronite Christian and that community has now vowed to support the Conservative candidate.

What a joke.
Those letters can signify another phrase, one which is closer to the party’s true intentions towards us. (I’ll leave it to the reader to figure that one out.) It’s not a matter if the Dippers will do it should they form the government, but when and how hard.

The Democrats in the States are pro Trump. It’s about the jobs not ideology. Wish Canadians would wake up.
(BTW I, too like the bus and LRT in Calgary and use it often.- always used le Métro in Mtl.)
When I was in Calgary, I lived in Marlborough, close to what was called back then Marlborough Town Square. I eventually worked on the other side of downtown, so I thought it was easier to take the bus instead of driving.
I caught the old Blue Arrow express which ran along Memorial Drive in those days. It often took me about 45 minutes from where I got on to downtown where I disembarked. It was another 10 – 15 minutes before I got to where I was working.
Still, it was easier than having to fight traffic and look for parking. There were times, however, when I did have to drive because I had business at our contractor in the Ogden shops area. Driving back home along Memorial was definitely no fun and I was glad that I didn’t make a habit of it.
When I moved to Vancouver to start grad studies, work on the C-train had started. I was in Calgary during the mid-1980s and I took the train from my old area to downtown and was pleasantly surprised as to how little time it took to get there. It was a definite improvement.
C Train transportation has improved in Calgary and has grown immensely since you left. The City has grown to 1.3 million people. The fastest growing areas are in the suburbs. There are now 5 more stations past Marlborough. The end of the line used to be Whitehorn. One can get to the Airport using public transportation, which is rather neat. (and cheap)
I live in the deep South along the red line. Every conceivable amenity is within walking distance including a Y and a multi-theatre complex. It is a rather nice area. Here is an updated map of the CTrain. It is still free to commute within the downtown area. My cousin who came to visit from out East loved that. A lady’s lovely voice comes on over a speaker and announces, “you are now leaving the free zone.” https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_CTrain_stations

I’d just ignore about 85% of this crap.
Seconded. Even the NHC in the States puts the risk of hurricane force winds in Halifax (sustained winds of over 74mph) at well below 10 percent. This is their way of saying “if it happens, we’ll eat our hats.”

Maxime Bernier calls teen climate activist ‘mentally unstable’
https://globalnews.ca/news/5846043/maxime-bernier-greta-thunberg-mentally-unstable/
Ahem, cough, cough, wheeze. The Calgary-Herald interviewed me yesterday (Monday afternoon) for a study I co-authored for AIMS — saying that Alberta’s young people are being short-changed by Trudeau’s Canada Summer Jobs program:
https://calgaryherald.com/news/politics/study-argues-alberta-short-changed-by-canada-summer-jobs-funding-allocation
Better news is that the Post-Sun media wire service is re-printing the story in various newspapers, mostly in Western Canada. SDA readers — could you help passing the story around? — DM in Fredericton, NB.
What no photo?
Again, my mistake. ,– David Murrell. .

– Apology accepted.
– Actually more disappointed at the Country and the impending hardships foisted upon us by Liberal governments.
– We are so doomed.
2:34 reply to David Murrell

Poor old Inbred Brits. Boris lost his Majority. What to do. What To Do. Blimey Bleeding Blighters. Screwed up over 1/2 the world. Wallow in your shithole.

“In It For You”
Jagmeet and the NDP’s new Campaign slogan – 2019.
What? Letters abbreviated to: I. I. F. You?
What a joke.
Those letters can signify another phrase, one which is closer to the party’s true intentions towards us. (I’ll leave it to the reader to figure that one out.) It’s not a matter if the Dippers will do it should they form the government, but when and how hard.
Ha! Yes!
A lady’s lovely voice comes on over a speaker and announces, “you are now leaving the free zone.”

Haha. Great sign over the highway telling the teachers to go f**k themselves. We need more of this. Teachers threaten to strike every single time. I’d fire every one of them.
We need a:
Trudeau is a Corrupt SOB
Butts is a Traitor
McKenna Is Nuts
The MSM is Bought & Paid For
to name a few.
ha ha !!!
I got an email from the mpp bemoaning the class size increase etc, inviting me to join in the protest.
I replied the 1st time in my life I was ever hit violently was a teacher. at a mere 6 yrs of age.
( what the FFFFFFFFFFF can a *6 yr old* possibly DO to earn criminal assault?)
and had the delightful experience of seeing a 2nd public school smashed to the ground recently, so no,
NOT interested in ‘joining the protest’.
Great Leader Kim Sung Trudeau is taking a brief detour from fundraising at taxpayer expense in Toronto. He will be burning jet fuel to Owen Sound Ont. to rant about Hitler Scheer in a Conservative riding. Taxpayers are paying for the trip of course.
Wet windy weekend ahead
https://weather.gc.ca/data/hurricane_images/track.png
If ‘Dorian’ delivers 140kph winds to Halifax this coming weekend … I’ll be back here next week eating crow. So where does Dorian end? The North Pole!? Good God! The Global Warming Weather shills are gonna milk the very last drop of HORROR out of every single hurricane that shows up … until … you are FULLY taxed (no remaining disposable income whatsoever), your automobiles are taken away, and ALL fossil fuels are banned.
I’d just ignore about 85% of this crap.
Seconded. Even the NHC in the States puts the risk of hurricane force winds in Halifax (sustained winds of over 74mph) at well below 10 percent. This is their way of saying “if it happens, we’ll eat our hats.”
