I’ve seen this before. I used to live in a country whose communist dictator was a darling of the US Presidents: Nixon and Ford visited him and Carter greeted him at the White House. Later, VP Bush visited as well. Nothing changed in the country, things got even worse. These are just photo-ops meant to make the dictator look good in the eyes of the masses. Let’s face it, NK is just a buffer zone for China and Russia and Kim is just a Chinese puppet.

This of course is a communist propaganda. The tone and the resolve in the voice is reminiscent of the 50’s and most of the 60’s of the past century. Ruskies were very good at it, so were Chinese. In 1962 in a socialist country run by communists when the Americans told the Ruskis to take the missiles home the communist press insisted that there were no Soviet missiles in Cuba. The day before the tragedy would happen, they still insisted that there were no missiles in Cuba.
The very next day when the Ruskis decided to take them out and cool it, the communist press said that the heroic soviet leaders decided to take the missiles out of Cuba.
Never mind that up to that point they daily reported that there were none.

Peace, Peace, then sudden destruction
President Trump is trying to separate Kim and North Korea from China. China has been the Norks godfather, financial supporter, international protector, and bullying boss. PDT is trying to drive a wedge between Kim and China.
Remember Kim Jong Un didn’t start the hellish system that is North Korea. He was born into it. He has lived in Switzerland. Maybe he actually wants to change it? Maybe PDT and the US are smart enough to give this a try? Fifty some previous years of the same conventional statesmanship has been a miserable failure. Kim already has Thermonuclear Weapons and ICBMs. Why not try something else, now that every other conventional and accepted foreign policy norm failed to stop him?
What is the other option? War? Nuclear War?
Exactly. It may not work. It may still fail badly. But Trump is TRYING to cut this Gordian knot, and his strategy of aggressively confronting China on their economic & trade practices is a vital part of it; in fact the two are heavily intertwined and you can’t succeed at one without the other. Absolutely no other POTUS in my lifetime has had the balls to try this, because they’ve all been either bought & paid for by the Chinese or too concerned with not teeing them off.
If Trump loses his reelection bid, it won’t take long for America to resume whoring itself out to China for pennies on the dollar and for NK to return to its subservient role as China’s rabid dog, whom China “keeps in line” for a price. The long term geopolitical implications are significant to say the least.
Thanks to Cameron, Sarkozy, Merkel and some piss-ant Italian PM; and the idiots Obama and Hillary Clinton we can’t point to Quadaffi and Libya as a success story.
Quadaffi got rid of his nuclear and chemical weapons in 2004, and thanks to the greedy Europeans and Obama, he was dead by 2012. “We came, we saw, he died! Har, har, har!” cackled Hillary. Idiots like these and the self righteous ones that harassed Pinochet as he was dying have proven the only way for a dictator to live out his days in peace is to hang onto power no matter what.
Kim is young, less than 40 years old, and has three kids. He did not build the hell of North Korea. His communist grandfather built that hell before hea was born. His father made it, if anything, worse before he died and left North Korea to KJU. If KJU fails and is deposed, his kids will likely be raped and tortured before they are killed by his North Korean successor.
Maybe Kim is looking for a better way? For him, his wife, his kids, and maybe even for the nameless peasants and slaves in North Korea.
We can hope.

As many have already pointed out Nork and Chicom soft pedaling is both tactical and strategic. The biggest thing happening in SE Asia right now is HongKong. Bejing would love to step in and squash the protest but that flies in the face of their crafted international persona. Kim gets a warm greet from Trump when less than 3 months ago he snuffed half a dozen of his subordinates for failing to accomplish his diplomatic offensive.
Watching HongKong scares any dictatorship as they fear losing their positions and likely facing possible trails. A positive example that contradicts this fear is the integration of E. Germany into the West. It is possible. The rise of China’s middle class is both a bonus and a threat to the Chicoms. Most Chinese citizens have benefited from the rise in their standards of living and defer to the communist leadership.
POTUS Trump has not shied away from challenging most of the accepted norms in USA foreign relationships. IMHO it is long overdue. Not only is he challenging many countries and their vested interests but he is also challenging many groups within the USA who benefit financially and politically by maintaining the status quo. Unfortunately some of those groups within the USA who oppose Trump are directed by communists.
Trump is good at creating positions of strength and opportunity from which to negotiate.
I am wondering if his goal here is for the USA to become the benefactor of NK. The USA and South Korea can offer NK far more opportunities than China.
Also, KJU could scapegoat on China, and blame them for much of the past. It will appear that China used NK as a buffer zone against SK while getting all the benefits of international trade.
The USA and SK could increase the size of the NK economy by a factor of ten for a relatively low cost. This would mean shifting some business from China to NK.
Enough prosperity and shifting blame to China and KJU could find a soft exit.
