Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

I remember when he hosted a half-hour afternoon pop music show on CBC TV more than 50 years ago. I don’t remember, though, which day it was on.
So long, sir, and we thank you.
B A, Alex Trebek hosted “Music Hop” on CBC every afternoon ,I think on Thursdays, but I could be wrong. The show came from a different city every day just after school, about 5PM. Alex’s version featured guest DJ Dave Mickey and Norm Amadio and his Rhythm Rockers, who featured Red Shea on guitar.Shea went on to become Gordon Lightfoot’s guitarist for decades.
Also a cute “girl group” called “The Girl Friends” featuring Dianne,Rhonda, and Stephanie. I personally had a hell of a crush on Rhonda.
“The 78-year-old says with love, support and prayers, ” You have that from all of us,Alex.
Bingo on all the details about Music Hop. It was one of a series of such weekday afternoon programs. Each day had a different show from a different location.
I seem to recall a band that spoofed the Beatles, calling itself the Bugs. I don’t recall if it was on MH, but it was on one of those shows.
Another link with my youth gone. Sigh…..
My apologies to Mr. Trebek. I didn’t read the article, since it was from the CBC, and I thought that he had died.
apparently a great guy.
Contractually he insisted there had to be at least one Canadian question in every episode of Jeopardy.
GT, yes,Alex won my heart when he stated “the second largest lake in Manitoba”, thus immortalizing the lake on which my Dad commercially fished for over forty years, and where I had my first real man-job.
Classy man who never forgot his roots….and close to my Northern heart.
He’s hopeful, but it will be a miracle.
I remember when he first went to L.A. some young bright things said they were disinterested in dating him because he was dull and boring. What did they expect from a Canadian born in Sudbury, I asked myself.
Thousands will be wishing him well, and the entertainment world will be less without him on Jeopardy.
One of the true gentlemen of broadcast tv. My prayers are going up.
Alex epitomizes what it means to be a humble unassuming Canadian. There’s not many of us left.
Sad to hear this. Fight on sir! We hope you fulfil your contract.
It was not till after Alan Thicke died that I learned he did a lot of other stuff. He wrote the theme songs for ‘Different Strokes’ and ‘The Facts of Life’ for example. Does Alec also write songs? Or wrestle sharks?
Alec also narrated the guide to Hearst Castle on the bus ride from the visitor centre to the castle. It was quite a surprise to hear his voice.
The absolute best was his Cheers cameo.
I liked him better when he hosted Half Wits, the SCTV game show.
Remember when Trebek took a bit of flak when he wondered aloud, after they met, if Trudeau during their meeting, was wearing some kind of electronic device to communicate with a third person?
Why would a genius need to do that?

I am encouraged to read that Trebek is choosing to FIGHT his cancer with the assistance of Modern Western Medicine, and the prayers of millions of his Jeopardy Fans (myself included) … instead of … doing what Steven Jobs did to fight his pancreatic cancer – using “alternative” “natural” Zen healing and “organic” treatments. Sometimes being a “creative” personality overwhelms the “logical” side of your brain. Trebek has always struck me as a “logical”, fact-loving, kind of guy. That bodes well for his healing. Lord, keep and protect Alex from harm. Help his body fight the scourge of this particular cancer. Inspire his physicians to find a cure.
My understanding is that Steven Jobs’ cancer was discovered when it was still in an early stage and quite curable – but of course he chose ”woo-woo” over modern medicine and by the time he agreed to give chemotherapy a try, it was too late. I wish Alex all the best and am hoping for a miracle, but to be honest, I’m not that optimistic. One of my friends died of stage 4 pancreatic cancer about two months after he was diagnosed. Overall, the survival rate is only 3%.

Sad news for Alex Trebek.
“Yakety Sax” as popularized by Boots Randolph was the same theme song Benny Hill had adopted.
I didn’t remember the show until I heard the theme song.
Yup, that sure takes me back a few years. I was in elementary school when that show was on the air.

Same here. I really didn’t watch that show too often – wasn’t ready for all that ‘teen’ stuff yet! Ha!
Here is an interview from FOX ‘S Harvey Levin that some might like, it is about 40 minutes. I had it recorded and erased it without seeing it, so I remembered it was out there.
There are a few Canadian who have distinguished themselves well in The USA… ABC anchor Peter Jennings & the host of the NBC series Date line “Keith Morrison” Keith was a finalist for the Today show when Greg Gumbel was fired ( I know Keith & provided a positive reference) but ABC had Jennings and NBC never wants to be second….
JMHO
Don’t forget Robert McNeil, Morley Safer, Linden Soles, and John Roberts.
Many may remember Roberts from when he was known as J. D. Roberts on MuchMusic. I recall when, over 40 years ago, Soles hosted the CBC Radio pop music program 90 Minutes with a Bullet when it was on Wednesday nights and, later, 60 Minutes with a Bullet after it moved to Saturday mornings.
As a dude from North Bay, Ontario, up the road from Sudbury, I always thought we were more hip than the Sudbury dudes back in the 1970s. In fact, no less than National Lampoon, as a news outlet, agree with this when they ran a cartoon comparing North Bay to Sudbury. I wish I still had that improbable evidence, but alas…
But I digress. In short, this North Bay dude salutes Alex Trebek, a fine Sudbury guy who brought some understated class to the morass of television land U S A. Vanna is still cute.
I’m from the Bay as well. St. Joe’s alumna (before they joined it with Scollard).
Hang on as long as you can Alex

Like he said, he has no choice because there’s three years left on his contract. I hope he gets to renew it. Respect.
Apparently over at the collectivist news network, Chris Cuomo stepped on his you know what over this.
Film credits say it all. Over 30 roles “as himself”.
This is method acting at its finest.
No mentions of Trump’s Right To Try legislation. I think Alex will (should anyway) exploit this to its fullest.
Perhaps he’ll get through it; I pray he does.
Pray Alex amen.
I first saw him when he hosted Toronto’s “Reach for the Top” show for high school teams in the 70s. It wasn’t the same after he left.
I’m not a big fan of Trebek but I wish him well. Art Flemming was a much better Jeopardy! host.
Flemming apparently died of the same illness.
If comparative notes are to be made this one is at least of some interest.
