  1. Sorry … Passenger “RIGHTS” supersede the Driver’s right to be a stoner. Find another line of work stoners. Better yet … I’ll take my own automobile. Screw you nutters!

  2. When it comes to Fitness of Duty, workers in safety sensitive jobs not only should be pot and alcohol free, but free of prescribed drugs which may affect them. Even over-the-counter stuff may be an issue.
IMHO going to work well rested is extremely important.
But I don’t like the state telling anyone who is on vacation and won’t be at work for a week that they can’t let er rip.

  3. Putting the lives of innocent people in the hands of a stupid African cow who had no business living in Canada in the first place—much less operating heavy machinery there—will still be just peachy, obviously.

Rest assured the new policy will only apply to white people. OC Transpo refused to fire Aissatou Diallo for obvious incompetence no matter how many times she crashed her bus. It was all hushed up till she got people killed.

  4. What does anyone believe the tolerances are for Heavy Equipment Operators?

Does anyone want to be standing near or around a 10-400 ton piece of metal that moves, and sometimes very quickly, and doesn’t know or care that you are in striking or squishing distance? Now add a person who is impaired, not able to judge time and space properly, holding your life in their hands.

I was working on a job site where a gentleman was driving a zoom boom who had to lift heavy supplies onto the cap of a bridge pier under construction. The guys were complaining that they were almost getting hit by the forks on the zoom boom at times because he was not stopping in time.
I caught him drinking beer, hiding it in a work glove WHILE he was driving the zoom boom right after lunch. He was sent packing.

Idiots are among us! Never underestimate the stupidly when addiction becomes a right and when it is labeled as a sickness.

    1. You caught someone drinking beer on a dangerous job and sent him packing.

      You are a real man.
      God bless you, Glacierman.
      Namaste.
If I may, without being forward, and with all due respect, if it were even possible…
I send you a hug today!

      1. Wasn’t so easy! It was my second day on the crew, he had years of seniority in the union.

I was so furious I went for a long walk, I watched him as he continued to work off by himself.

I stopped him and confronted him. Told him leave right now. Go home or I would go straight to the Super.

        He left.

Ten minutes after he booked it, never to return, the foreman asked where he was. I said he left. He then asked if he had been drinking, to which I confirmed. I was not nearly the hero you imagine. I should have reported him, but I did what I thought to be the best option to allow him to think about his criminal behavior and make some positive life changing decisions.
Never saw him again, hoping he straightened out. Once I told the Foreman, word spread pretty quickly, there was a palpable change in the seriousness of the crew and their attitude towards me. Some good, some not.

Doing the right thing sometimes costs. But nobody had to jump out of the way of wild zoom boom forks which were ready to skewer at a slip of an impaired operator.

    2. Good for you G-man. When I was in charge of crews I made a little speech before the first day on the job which stressed showing up on time, working safely, and NO drugs or alcohol allowed, firing offence first time.

Some of the kids were quite outraged that I’d fire someone for smoking dope on the job as they believed it didn’t impair them. ( No shit) Over the years I did fire a few who were stupid enough to work stoned, only drunk I ever had was a Noble Savage who came to work blind drunk and slept all day in the crew bus, then whined when I didn’t pay him for the day.
