The US has imposed sanctions on Venezuela’s state-owned oil firm PDVSA and urged the country’s military to accept a peaceful transfer of power.
National Security Adviser John Bolton said President Nicolás Maduro and his allies could “no longer loot the assets of the Venezuelan people”.
The Trump administration unveiled a sweeping set of criminal charges against China’s Huawei Technologies Co. in its latest salvo against the telecom giant, with authorities unsealing a pair of indictments just days before U.S.-China trade talks are set to resume.

It’s clear that in this situation China is just a carpetbagger, but who wouldn’t be? Venezuela has the largest proven oil reserves on the planet. Other countries were lining up to do the same, but China beat them to it.

I don’t see any kind of a positive end game without going through the ministries and dispatching the Maduro supporters to heads on pikes.

China no longer backs Maduro with anything but empty words.
Neither Caracas nor PDVSA has paid a thin dime to its creditors—including Beijing—since 2017.
“World opinion” has turned on Maduro so viciously because Venezuela’s creditors, including Beijing, have concluded that looting Venezuela’s oil wealth is impossible while Maduro remains in power.
China will not oppose Maduro’s ouster. Guaido has made clear he is perfectly willing to hand over the oil, the Venezuelan people be damned.
China supports Maduro because the US doesn’t. China is playing a longer game than the Americans. The US usually wants things over quick, so they get sucked into some sort of military action, which ends up costing the US lots of money. Or the intervention generates lots of ill will when the US pulls out, leaving a vacuum for others to fill. And somehow the US ends up with a bunch of refugees, which China enjoys watching.
The Chinese figure Trump needs his own foreign adventure. It will divert attention from the trade issues between the US and China. We will see if Trump can stay out of Venezuela.

Most of the oil from Venezuela is of such quality as to require special treatment for its high sulfur content. (I’m not an oil guy and can’t explain this well).
They don’t have anywhere else to easily ship their oil that can process the high sulfur level.
PDVSA’s preferred client in the USA is CITGO, for the most part (100%?) owned by PDVSA, though the Venezuela gov’t has put much of CITGO up as collateral against some large loans from Russia. Some saying it’s 50% in play for the bonds Venezuela has floated for the past 18 years. Some as high as + 10-11% at due. Most of these have been being paid by Venezuela, though I believe they’ve let a couple slip through and this didn’t make any difference to the already dire state of the economy.

The biggest threat to the U.S. from Venezuela will be the hundreds of thousands of “refugees” that will try to enter the U.S. after Venezuela completely collapses. The main reason why border security in the U.S. is the number one issue. It will look a lot like the EU did when the mass caravans headed to Europe.
