To understand what’s going on with President Donald Trump and his opposition, and in other countries as diverse as France, Hungary, Italy and Brazil, it’s important to realize that the post-World War II institutional arrangements of the Western democracies are being renegotiated, and that those democracies’ professional and managerial elites don’t like that very much, because they have done very well under those arrangements. And, like all elites who are doing very well, they don’t want that to change.

    This author talks of post-war arrangements but never links any action by Donald Trump to the removal of these arrangements. Being very generous here, at best Turmp is an ineffectual response to a real problem.

    More likely he is the last gasp of an entitled cohort of Americans who thought they could forever give mediocre effort at unskilled jobs in one-factory sh*tholes that produce mediocre product and then uh oh competition from abroad and from robots disrupted that cozy arrangement. Now nobody wants to hire unskilled unworldly losers!

      Today a white man of modest background is lucky if he is still employed at 45, or has anything to fall back on when it becomes clear he will never earn a living wage again, other than what Aaron Clarey calls the Smith and Wesson plan.

      Their sons’ prospects are even worse. Their only realistic career option is volunteering to be cannon fodder for Middle Eastern wars. Everything else can be done in India—including coding.

      Oh, profits have increased. If you’re the son of an oligarch by his trophy Chinese wife and can count on a place in the Ivy League and a sinecure in the Fortune 500, for you the future has never looked brighter. But the future of the children of most living north Americans has not been secured in any way.

        3. Interesting article. But, what StatsCan statistics (or Watson) don’t bring up is debt load; especially the generations of public debt that WILL be shouldered by millennials.

          That makes any apparent employment gains or advantages transient and irrelevant.

        Just for the record, I have no used for Hillary nor most of the other Democratic hopefuls. Trump got in because the Democrats picked such a lousy candidate. But the GOP would have still won with some sensible republican candidate rather than FogHorn Trump-Horn.

    There is an 1848 in reverse going on and the people are being awakened to the rule of the class who are more equal than the despicable deplorables.

    Government has been the enemy, probably as long as you have been alive, and you have never voted for anyone who was not a rent seeking con man. The possible exceptions were Thatcher, Reagan, and John Paul 2, with probably some lesser known ones on smaller stages in various places at different times. Like Orban, Bolsonaro, and Trump today; vs Macron, Merkel, May, Trudeau, Maduro, China, Denmark, Norway, Spain, ….

    Think of government like a solitary, naive rich boy; with legions of grifter sluts (voters) running towards him from all directions with their hands out.

    Or maybe government is the ultimate pimp, and voters always cower before the pimp hand.

  9. You know what is really funny though?

    The trolls like unme, andrew, whatever the other names are that I just skip over, they think they are actually having an affect! This is Hillary losing in a different venue; the focus groups have told them “all you have to do is post stuff on ‘alt right’ forums like SDA, and everyone will change their minds”. Their pollsters keep telling them that UnMe’s posts are working.

    All I can do is laugh at the stupidity.

    At best, they are slowing the rush from the choir by preaching to it. But they are gaining no new converts.
