Ontario lost 93,000 part time jobs over the last 12 months.
Could it have something to do with Wynne’s labour law changes that not only boosted the minimum wage from $11.40 an hour last August to $14 an hour this August? Add in several other changes that small business owners tell me make it harder to hire and keep workers at the low end and the answer is yes.
More here, including what Ford says he will do to fix it.

Ford is moving too slowly. He needs to focus and get down to it, not speak in generalities. He needs to stop wasting time on diversions like ‘fighting gangs’ and enforcing a stupid pointless campus free speech policy. FOCUS
The real minimum wage is zero.
IDK … how much are the welfare payments? During the Obama Admin., it was more “profitable” to NOT work than to take the shit-jobs available in an economy devoid of manufacturing work.
probably the vast majority….the opposite happened with Carter…when he increased welfare…enrollment doubled
Take the bad with the good. Then when things are good you can take credit.
Say, yeah whatever, we’re on the right track now and move on.
Of course Ontario lost jobs because of the minimum wage hike. This is exactly what’s happened in every other jurisdiction which drove up minimum wages. Seattle had hundreds of restaurants close when they did the same thing. This bit is obvious:
“Labour laws shouldn’t make it harder to give people a job.”
That’s what all labour laws do. Every time you increase the standards on something, you drive up its costs. On everything to which new standards are applied. Increase safety requirements on anything, and costs go up. What the Wynne government forgot, is that in everything there needs to be a balance. between improved standards and cost. What the Wynne government also forgot is that many jobs are not intended and never were designed to provide a living wage.c
Yeah but the Liberals managed to hire 250,000 government employees. Wonder how many endless billions that will cost. I think Ford is doing a fabulous job.
Hired under affirmative action, it is almost as if there was method to this madness.
raise minimum wages, you increase tax intake AND appease the unions. Unions use “bases” earning to justify their demands, which is mostly more$$$$$ , and that increases their membership intake.
And unDork, why do you always post nonsense on topics you have NO clue about. You come across as about as informed as a 15 yo school girl!
Wynne is like a bad case of venereal disease, only uglier.
Who knew that Orville Redenbacker had a sister, shouda kept her in the family popcorn business!
Hardly surprising since the Financial Accountability Office of Ontario estimated the minimum wage increase would cost about 50,000 fewer jobs.

Minimum Wage Act aka The Robot Employment Act or the Wealth Gap Creation Act
I knew all these jobs were going to be lost once Doug Ford won 🙁
Ontario needs to bring back Kathleen Wynne!
It is funny how the so called conservatives here, are basically saying “Wynne had the right idea, but was slightly off in the execution”.
You wonder why you have Trudeau as prime minister… it is very clear to me; this is exactly the government you deserve.
What so called Conservatives are saying that? I have never heard any “so called” Conservative ever mention any support for the Wynner. As for Turdeau he is almost universally despised by every Conservative that I have talked to,and thats quite a few.
Kevin doesn’t realize that Pat is funnin.
Kevin doesn’t understand the irony of Wynneing.
There’s a terrific server in a chain restaurant here in Alberta that our family frequents that we’ve known for now for years. The last time we were there she was almost breaking down in tears – the restaurant brought in a new manager to “re-work” things. That is, to do more with less people in an environment where the workers are already coming in much earlier before their actual shift to help out due to management pressure, presumably, to keep their jobs. Now it seems that Notley’s transplant of Wynne’s minimum wage agenda here is having terrible in our face consequences in Alberta right now. People are losing their jobs and the survivors are being made by their bosses to work much harder than is fair and reasonable all because of the waving of the magic wand of the socialists. Businesses are struggling to survive and the people who work in them are now more scared, stressed out and exhausted than ever with many of them being pushed out to the curb with nothing. Good job, Socialist LOSERS! Kenney can’t come soon enough.
Oh and Kevin – F Off!
