The U.S. said Monday it will be imposing an additional 50 per cent tariff on Canadian imports due to retaliatory and “discriminatory” measures Canada took in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs.
Trump signed three executive orders, each one using a different justification for the new tariff: the provincial and territorial boycotts on American alcohol products, Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on U.S.-made vehicles and auto parts, and quotas on American dairy imports under Canada’s supply management system.
The new tariff will take effect in 30 days and will apply to goods covered by the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement on free trade (CUSMA), a senior administration official told reporters on background.
“Over the past year and a half, only two countries have chosen to retaliate against President Trump’s tariffs rather than negotiate a deal with the United States: the People’s Republic of China and Canada,” the White House said in a statement on the new tariff.
Canada exports approximately $1.4 billion worth of alcoholic beverages to U.S. annually. U.S. receives roughly 90% of Canada’s total alcohol exports, with spirits.
Canada exports about $360 million worth of dairy products to the U.S. annually.

The “Elbows Up!” retards will be chanting louder and doing the chicken dance thingy harder. The LDPRK is a failed entity.
““…only two countries have chosen to retaliate against President Trump’s tariffs rather than negotiate a deal with the United States: the People’s Republic of China and Canada”
Err, that’s only One country, Donald. You know, like Trinidad and Tobago….
Heh. That’s good.
Et tu, blubber douggie?
The DNC, the EU, and China using Carnage as a pawn to fight The Donald. Nobody gives a crap about us great unwashed. Although this might actually be the spark required to break Western Canada off from our Ontario overlords. But I doubt it.
They will use oil to weld you together
Nah. Any alleged deals to move more oil are purely a trinket to appease the masses. The tanker ban remains intact, and nobody will buy our products with the cost of carbon taxes levied by both the federal government, and every provincial goverment any of it passes through. Hell, I’d bet the feds give municipalities extended taxing power over pipelines.
I’m way past the point of giving King Chuck the Green the middle finger salute (and, believe me, I liked Liz. She had charm). Please, US, invade us, take over and save us from Mark Carnage.
Do you really want to be ruled over by President Newsome or President Ocasio-Cortez?
No, but right now we are ruled by Xi’s puppet.
The puppet looked unhappy, maybe shared, because Trump let him know we are about to get buried financially.
Or, maybe that Brookfield’s assets are being considered for siezure, since some of the directors are considered a threatened to US security.
You seem pretty confident the Dems will win. Americans don’t change what political parties they support like Canadians do. Republicans who don’t like Trump may refuse to vote but they won’t vote Democrat. Many Democrats have said they won’t vote in the next election because of the cheering and partying they saw in their party over Kirk’s assassination. They won’t vote Republican.
I’m not sure how much anyone worries about the vote. The concern is with the result that the Democrats will manufacture regardless of the vote.
America and its glorious President will annihilate Canada economically as an overseas possession of the retarded King Charles. Then America will remake the red-headed autistic stepchild pseudo-nation into a productive and successful image of itself. You will not like it. It will hurt. It will take time to heal. Progressive will be detailing your car and mowing your lawn. True conservatives will end up much happier and wealthier as a result of this.
Either that or the Dems will win in the midterms, Trump will be a lame dick for the rest of his term and the US will have a communist president in the next presidential election. Half their states are already governed by commies. It seems to be popular in the US.
Not half. But too many, for sure.
Er, I think you mean, “lame duck”, Rusty. Not that you’re necessarily wrong, I mean the guy’s older than I am, but…
#PMMC seems out of sorts. Maybe #BigD told him to go beg from the Chicoms since he works for them.
I’m looking forward to voting Conservative again as soon as possible. It may not solve anything, but it’ll peeve Mr.PMMC.
Worth it! Go #Donnie go!
I better get to Costco here in NW Montana and buy my year’s supply of maple syrup right now.
Around here all our lumber appears to be coming from BC especially Canfor and we have two stud mills here in our County. 80% of Canada’s finished softwood lumber is exported to the US.
Supply Manage Yourselves to Death.
Quebec will soon be eating their old dairy cows.
given the price of beef, well . . . . . . .
Not to worry my Canadian friends … Hoary Marmot will be declaring Trump’s action … ‘illegal’ … in 3-2-1 …
He is probably a Union Rep at Canada Post.
Speaking of dying Canadian jobs …

Glad I’m on a Mexican beer binge right now.

Lightweight.
Drink whiskey and move to Tennessee already.
I like Wiser’s Deluxe whiskey, brewed near the Gordie Howe bridge.
Tip an elbow, eh?
Kentucky is the best whiskey country. Miles and miles and miles of bourbon distilleries.
My daughter has taken … the tour … and barely scratched the surface
Trump turns the insanity up another notch.
And it doesn’t stop here. Later this week, he could impose tariffs based on section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, not just on Canadian goods, but on goods from almost all major industrial countries.
Congress has given the president too many tools to invoke tariffs indiscriminately. They need to pass legislation to ensure that ALL tariffs invoked by the president are subject to congressional review. This would require a super majority, so it won’t happen in the next few years, but they need to do it.
Executive
Executive branch. Look it up.
Article 1, Section 8, Clause 1 of the US constitution:
This precise passage is why the SCOTUS overturned Trump’s use of the IEEPA to levy tariffs. He only has that authority when congress explicitly gives him that authority, and the IEEPA did not do that.
But other statutes do, and congress has gone too far in extending the power to levy tariffs to the president. They have the power to reel that in, and they should do so.
Yawn.
Trump didn’t yawn when the Supreme Court overturned many of his tariffs. The constitition still has some bite.
Ha ha ha,
You guys are citing some quaint rules based order in these latter days?
Separation of powers?
The eminent and stoic members of congress, Heh.
As for Chinada, our parliament of fowls are contemptuous.
The agenda continues.
Caution, Boring old Bloviating Hall Monitor, lecturing ad nauseum.
As MY PRESIDENT explained … he has options. Which he’s exercised. And you know full well, Congress has delegated (their Constitutional prerogative) much of the trade and tariff decisions to the executive branch.
OK … Constitutional scholar … now do the 14th Amendment and how the framers anticipated birth tourism …
Congratulations. You faithfully repeated what I said above.
But my argument is that they have overdone it, so much so that the president can apply tariffs on a whim. A country has wild fires? Hit them with tariffs! Congress needs a throttle for when the president goes starking raving retard. They need to take back their constitutional authority.
So when the SCOTUS couldn’t adequately SPANK my President … you fall back to whiny point #2
The golden rule in application. “Offer us free trade and get free trade yourself. Make trade more difficult for us and trade will get harder for you.” Most countries shrug and open their own markets.
Marx Carnage has a lot invested in the US and is personally getting richer while tanking our economy for the net zero new world order. And you want us to believe that Trump is the corrupt one?
I don’t know if Trump is corrupt, but by embracing fringe economic theories, he is not working in the best interests of his country. Further, he often imposes tariffs for reasons far removed from the stated purpose of whatever statute he invokes.
Hint, the US administration DOES NOT CARE what you think.
They never do.
What’s worse is an uppity, pompous Canadian Karen lecturing them about “what is American”.
They
Don’t
Care.
Neither do we Rat.
Well no one cares what you think. All you do is insult. That’s all you got.
“Fringe economic theories”….that’s funny. As the Canadian economy sinks into the sunset.
When the country which is by far your biggest trading partner hits you with crushing tariffs, doing everything it can to discourage investment in your country, that will happen.
But the US isn’t doing itself any favours either. Trump’s booming economy isn’t happening. Instead he has steady but low economic growth, desultory employment growth, and high inflation that will not go away.
Why should anyone invest in the US, when its president insists on dragging it into trade wars?
There’s ONE … and only ONE thing holding back the US economy at the moment … and that’s artificially HIGH interest rates … only Japan is higher in the G7
Country Central Bank Interest Rate (%)
Canada 2.25
France 2.4
Germany 2.4
Italy 2.4
Japan 10.75
United Kingdom 3.75
United States 3.75
Trump’s economic policies have done nothing but STIMULATE our economy.
BTW … I track my local upper middle class communities Design Review Commission meetings. MOST have been canceled in the last two years. Why? Construction lending rates and mortgage rates are TOO DAMN HIGH. It’s killed off what has been a 50year BOOM marketplace. Construction spending and everything associated with it is in the dumper. Thanks for the inflation, Biden
The reason the US has high interest rates is because that’s the main vehicle that the Federal Reserve Banks uses to bring down inflation.
One of Trump’s principle campaign promises was to bring down inflation. He never kept that promise. He never even tried. In fact, his tariffs and his war on Iran have fueled inflation. And then at a rally in Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania, he mocked people who were concerned with the cost of living, call the issue a hoax and con job.
These are all the results of Trump’s policies. He did it to himself.
Well … as a supply side economic believer … killing demand by raising the average Joe’s credit card rates to 29.9% is simply cruel. No, that’s not me, I don’t have those rates to pay. And no, I’ve never worked a blue collar job … but I’m not an elitist prick who believes that the middle class is expendable and/or exploitable. Killing an economy is no way to rescue an economy from inflation. Killing the patient to save the patient is something only a FOOL would do.
And our most recent episodes of inflation have been 100% government-fabricated. FIRST by our Government Banking regulators MAKING banks give loans with no demonstrable ability to pay those loans … and pumping dollars into the pockets of GIANT corporations who were too big to fail.
and then …
by deliberately unleashing COVID from a remote communist Chinese lab on the orders of HER … to RUIN the soaring, perfectly balanced Trump economy. And then throwing $Trillions of FREE newly printed dollars into deliberately assassinated economy.
Our government has been doing everything possible to make life unaffordable for the little guy … which has spurred radical crazed communism to rise up from the poor beleaguered low and middle classes. Yeah … it’s been a plan. Cloward-Piven’s plan.
Oh I agree. And the guy who’s been stoking the flames over the last 18 months is Donald Trump.
Trump didn’t CREATE COVID … and what do you believe would have happened if he didn’t throw government $$$$$$$$$$$ at the intentionally murdered economy? Don’t be stupid.
But then … he lost the fraudulent 2020 election anyway … and Biden/Obama printed and spent even MORE US dollars … and Mitch McConnell signed off on all of it.
THAT is the cause of our latest reverberating persistent inflationary cycle.
Kenji doesn’t know what “last 18 months” means.
“They need to pass legislation to ensure that ALL tariffs invoked by the president are subject to congressional review. ”
No, they don’t.
Their system of government has been working just fine for the last 250 years.
Same thing for their voting system. Everything’s just ticketyboo.
I’m curious if that 90% of exported alcohol is from Canadian companies, or if they are from multinationals who happen to have distillery plants in Canada. For example, Diageo, the British Company that owns Crown Royal who decided to close a bottling plant in Ontario for the US market.
The tariffs on Canuck booze are long overdue. Should have been 100%, not 50. Time to make all Canadian companies victims of Carney’s Karma.
This is just the opening rounds, of what will be a devastating economic depression in Canada.
Cuz ElBoWz or something.
The pain must be excruciating for the LIEberal voters to understand how wrong and ignorant they are.
“Over the past year and a half, only two countries have chosen to retaliate against President Trump’s tariffs rather than negotiate a deal with the United States: the People’s Republic of China and Canada”
Enough. I’m out.
Except it’s not true. The EU has retaliated. Mexico and India have also retaliated in the past against Trump’s tariffs, but I think they’ve lapsed.
Hilarious. That’s why Toyota is doubling the size of its truck plant in Texas and moving all Tacoma production out of Mexico.
Your reply is completely divorced from what I posted.
No, it’s ignoring your ineptitude and blame casting.
Get it, ElBoWZo?
Everything is not about you.
I suspect he’s a BIG fan of Canada’s “hate speech” laws … as everything appears to hurt his feeeeeeelllllings.
No, there are vital divorce papers still to be signed! Please call my office!
Hey, Toyota, you’re terrific.
Love my 2006 Tacoma.
I also love Japan’s new leader. She plays drums and got sticks from her favourite drummer…the dude from Deep Purple.

Oh well … I lost out on a hell of an investment. Who knew TOOL were quite so popular
The EU is done….their GDP as a percent of world GDP has been falling for twenty years and is now half what it was two decades ago. Mexico isn’t important and India has its own problems.
The US’s GDP as a percentage of world GDP has been trending down for a long time as well.
https://ycharts.com/indicators/us_gdp_as_a_percentage_of_world_gdp
That is not a reflection on US nor Europe, but the fact that rest of the world has been modernizing.
“Except it’s not true. The EU has retaliated.”
And no one even noticed.
Trump did.
https://www.euronews.com/business/2025/03/13/donald-trump-vows-to-respond-to-eu-retaliatory-tariffs-as-trade-war-escalates
I think it’s hilarious when Trump imposes a tariff, and then is shocked when the other side imposes retaliatory tariffs. What did he think was going to happen?
Which they, very quietly, voted to scrap:
https://www.dw.com/en/european-parliament-committee-votes-to-scrap-us-tariffs/a-77387567
Your article is from March of ’25; it needs an update for clarity.
I’m sorry; am I picking on you again? (by the way, you completely missed my point in that post about academia and the ‘free market’ — I’ll try and explain it: while one should always be free to choose whatever field you wish to specialize in, the classical liberal education [that gave us the concept of free market economics in the first place] is predicated upon having a core base of knowledge that encompasses the sciences, arts, and humanities; if one is degraded, the structure falls…Gramsci understood this; you apparently do not…nor free markets).
Yes, they did eventually scrap it — as part of a deal with the US. In short, the retaliation did its job. It forced the US to ease back on its tariffs.
But note that it refutes RedPop’s claim. The EU did in fact retaliate against the EU over the last year and a half.
And do try to post without personal attacks. Otherwise people might think you don’t have a real point to make.
When you whine about being picked on, and someone points out that you’re whining about being picked on, that’s not a personal attack. She made a substantial point, and if she wants to accompany that with an insult, I think that earns her the privilege, especially if it’s a good insult. (This one was adequate, she could do better.)
If the Democrats had an ounce of competency, they would be making hay out of Trump’s economic policies. They would be explaining to the average Joe how tariffs and the Iran war are driving up the cost of nearly everything despite Trump’s campaign promices. The midterm elections would be a blood bath.
But the they’re so mired in civil war, trying to fend off extremism within their ranks, that they’re ineffective, their message unfocused at best.
The Dem’s economic policies are replacement of the voting block and institutionalizing communism. Because it’s worked so well everywhere it’s been tried.
Clearly you’re not paying attention, of course.
The Demarxists are facing a schism with their Communist pals, who have been placing their own candidates in preliminary runoffs, ousting “Democrats” in favour of outright, classic communists.
This won’t end well. For The DeMarxist Party.
That would be the “fending off extremism” I was talking about. Pay attention.
Competency?

Are you SERIOUS?
You keep agreeing with me, but making it sound like you’re refuting me. Are you carefully reading what I write, or just lashing out blindly?
Well, I hope he’s lashing blindly. I could watch that for hours.
*sigggggghhhhh*
OK … once again … I’ll explain it to you.
My example IS agreeing with you. But you are so defensive … about every little comment that you have to argue, just to argue.
My point is that the Dem’s have gone WAY past incompetency … straight into “suicidally insane”. Yes … running ACTUAL insane candidates.
Trump is great on everything but tariffs. On that, he spins epic amounts of bullshït.
Dairy tariffs on US imports weren’t reached because the US didn’t meet the import levels THEY negotiated in trump’s first term.
So that was crap.
But he never mentions the investment deficit between Canada and the US: do you see many Americans investing in this country or do those dollars all flow the other way. Guess we should be glad marxist carnage isn’t throwing an export tariff on US investments as leverage, small as it might be.
Big Trump fan on just about everything but this, and here he’s full of it

And stupidity such as yours is beneath contempt, let alone reply.
“Dairy tariffs on US imports weren’t reached because the US didn’t meet the import levels THEY negotiated in trump’s first term.
So that was crap. ”
No, it wasn’t:
——————————
The U.S. has struggled to meet its dairy access targets in Canada. While the USMCA guaranteed tariff-free access to roughly 3.5% of the Canadian dairy market, disputes arose because Canada reserved most of this quota for domestic processors rather than U.S. exporters.
——————————-
On this and a couple of other issues, Canada has been playing silly games with the agreements we have in place. Trump has no tolerance for that kind of thing, hence the tariffs. Stop playing the games, and the tariffs disappear.
I reference an CNBC interview last April with Rand Paul on the dairy tariffs, who said the US never exceeded the USMCA negotiated levels before high import tariffs applied.
I’ve no idea what you’re referencing.
And on tariffs, Trump is relying on macho sound bites for supporters who won’t dig any further.
I’m pro-Trump, but this issue is throwing as much smoke as our wildfires
Sorry, all I got out of this is that Trump can’t be trusted to keep his word. How exactly can you cut a deal with a guy who will reneg at a whim?
Neither can Carney.
” The U.S. said Monday it will be imposing an additional 50 per cent tariff on Canadian imports due to retaliatory and “discriminatory” measures Canada took in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs.”
What part of that do you need help understanding? Action/reaction.
Canada had not been living up to our end of the agreements we already had in place, so Donald Trump imposed tariffs to force us back onto a level playing field. I have no problem with that.
Yeah, like the dairy “imbalance”?
Do more research and less head-nodding and sloganeering. You’ll feel less manipulated.
Translation: you can throw the elbows … but can’t take the body blows. That guarantees you’ll go DOWN by the 4th round.
As far as I know booze isn’t covered under USMCA, most of the products Trump is putting tariffs are. USMCA, which Trump signed, is a legally binding agreement. Trump is breaking the law which is what I’m upset about. USMCA has a dispute mechanism built in which he could legally use if he feels Canada isn’t playing fair. The fact that he’s not using it says volumes about his position.
On July 1 my country decided not to extend the USMCA; this puts it up for yearly review, and all three countries are in negotiations — or at least they’re supposed to be.
This new launch of tariffs is a salvo in those opening rounds. Is it unorthodox and not ‘playing by The Rules”? Yes, but ‘The Rules’ were always bs that never were reality anyway.
Canada should perhaps get to the negotiating table…or not; Canada’s choice.
We’ve too many limp-dïck poseurs here that enjoy tweaking the US at the detriment of a great relationship with our closest neighbour. I despise them and what they do.
You have – for the next 2 years, unless you lose the House in your upcoming midterms – the 800lb presidential gorilla in the room who has done incredible things for your country.
But in this trade issue it’s not about “fairness” that could be appealed via the USMCA as noted above. It’s about that gorilla throwing his weight around for soundbytes and vid clips because – for the time being – he can.
I recognize that, and this country has to take the pounding on this. For now.
But don’t kid yourself this is about “fairness”.
Whiskey Democracy.
PS KM … this new tariff will absolutely NOT be a tax on me … unless you want to convince me what Canadian products I HAVE TO BUY…
And don’t bother with your cheap ass oil. That we sell for a profit overseas anyway.
Do you consider eating optional? Because without potash from Canada, US food production would plummet.
But it’s a false challenge. Nations rarely buy from other nations because they HAVE to. They can almost always find a substitute somewhere else. They buy because it’s economically advantageous to do so.
“Nations rarely buy from other nations because they HAVE to. They can almost always find a substitute somewhere else. They buy because it’s economically advantageous to do so.”
For once, I do agree with you!
See, I’m not always a meanie.
And we did lift sanctions on Belorussian potash, so there’s that.
https://www.procurementresource.com/blog/potash-producers-in-the-usa
Let me guess … buying American potash is like buying a $300 toaster because it isn’t cheap crap built in communist Chyyynahhh? Or Canadddduhhhhh?
All the potash mined in the US only accounts for about 2% of their annual needs. Personally, I’d never threaten a country’s food supply unless we were at war with them.
“All the potash mined in the US only accounts for about 2% of their annual needs. ”
By choice, and because they only mine it in two states. They could mine more if they wanted to, since they do have 220 million metric tons. It’s just cheaper and easier to get it from Canada…but we are not the only source of cheap potash in the world.
The immutable, unchangeable bottom line: Canada needs the US far more than the US needs Canada. We could change that, yes…over the course of YEARS, if we started right now. Good luck surviving that long.
Whether it be the 51st State or Republic of North America; to have the rights afforded by the 1st (free speech) and 2nd amendment (right to keep and bear arms), is enough to get my support and vote.
“Whether it be the 51st State or Republic of North America; to have the rights afforded by the 1st (free speech) and 2nd amendment (right to keep and bear arms), is enough to get my support and vote.”
Agreed.
Most of our problems are self inflicted. We are a high tax and regulation jurisdiction whose ruling party campaigned against Trump to win the election. Continuing to campaign against Trump keeps them popular. In this Trump’s tarrifs are assisting the Libs while they cause much damage to the country. Overall Trump has done more for the US and the world than any president in a decade – century? That being said these random actions are over the top. One way to respond is by running campaigns in US states with vulnerable congressmen and senators and high levels of trade with Canada. All representatives and one third of senators are up for reelection. Overturning a handfull of seats will make the democrats the majority and handicap Trump for the rest of his term. Four months to the election and thirty months until Trump is gone. We can’t compete on tarrifs but we can compete on legislators and in the courts. Meanwhile we have to get our heads out of our asses and get our own house in order.
Like what? Economic growth has been steady but lacklustre, and highly dependent on the AI boom. High inflation continues, fueled in part by Trump himself, who doesn’t seem to take it seriously. Federal government debt is soaring, and that’s becoming a ticking bomb. The US has become mired in a conflict against Iran that is throttling trade across the globe.
He has addressed illegal immigration, and that’s no small thing. Other than that, I struggle to find a bright side.

Why is that?
I hold your EXTREME leftist government in disdain. Every Canadian I’ve ever met has been … nice (lucky me). It’s your leftists I loathe.
