56 Replies to ““Unexpected””

  1. In my opinion, when there are corpses on the streets of Toronto, that people step over cause no one is ever coming to get them; only then will 5% of socialists give it a second thought. The other 95% will continue to vote for the people and policies that got them where they are.

Maybe I am being too optimistic; socialists never give anything a second thought. They never examine results, and ponder what could have been done differently. It is only the zeal of the fully committed believer for them. The same cult fanaticism that caused people to give their own children cyanide Kool-aid in Jonestown, is at play in the elections of people like Wynne, Notely, every Detroit/Chicago city council since 19550, the situations of Tommy Robinson, Charlie Gard, Rotherham, the rape gangs at the Christmas markets in Germany, Sweden, …

Everyone; you voted for it. Enjoy what you are getting. Good and hard.

    1. A first thought is a necessity before any second thought is logically possible.

I do realize logic and leftism are mutually exclusive.

That’s was missing from the global village useful idiots.

    2. National Socialist Hitler, and his security and crony buisness held till Germany was in ruins. Castro brothers, Stalin. You can count the number of people that stood up to the Chicago Politicians and their Mafi bribers on part of one hand.
Tha state tat sucking academia, media, crony and cowardly buisness looking for their next subsidy. The proles have somma dope, booze, cable, and “smart” phones.

  2. “Unexpected weakness”….

Now there’s some early morning irony for us all.

    1. Exactly! From the heart out nails it. Certainly no brain involved with this federal government.

  3. Since Prince Unicorn declared war on Trump, the loonie declined by $0.02 US. And let’s not forget how high inflation was when PET was in charge.

    Trudeau: wrecker of economies.

  4. I have a feeling if we charged Canadians $.25 every time they crossed the border..
…we could pay for the wall

    LOL

    1. The Americans already charge commercial shipments per crossing. Even though you are joking it wouldn’t surprise me.

  5. Canadians are 25 % poorer since prince selfiesox got in. Remember the par dollar. Wasn’t so long ago

    1. well now, this is not in defence of trudel, it has been much worse. that is mainly because Canadians are stupid and think the the tail should wag the dog. go to work, produce at a profit and then you will have the Canadian government up you a s s for every dime that they consider profit. I have spent 1.52 to buy an American dollar. I have also been in a circumstance where we were 10 cents above. I know how things should work but does anyone else?

  6. As disposable income goes down, retail and charitable donations will feel the effects. I’d assume higher interest rates, and the threat of higher rates, is the biggest factor for decreased spending. Being house and mortgage poor will put a lot of strain on family finances. So, yes, it’s a great time for the Liberals to fight a trade war, add new taxes and pile regulations on Canadian taxpayers and businesses.

Anecdotally, even in this small town far from major employers or a city, I know too many people who have bought houses that are considerably more expensive than ours with less income. I have no idea how they are making ends meet now and I suspect more rate hikes would blow a huge hole in their monthly budget. I fear the next recession will be quite nasty.

It’d be interesting to know how much of Canada’s GDP has become dependant on housing (construction, loans, sales) and the rapid housing price rise since 2008.

    1. Speaking of houses. Our friend’s son is a teacher in Saskatoon and has a part time job of looking after and checking houses repossessed by the banks. He looks after around 80 at the moment.

      1. There is so many in Lloydminster I think the banks are happy if someone stays in them and pays the heat . The sad fact is it isn’t just the bungled Nafta negotiations , it’s the war on business owners , carbon tax , environmental objections , scuttled pipelines Ect . But just listen because it is all Hitler’s fault . (Trump) . Good jobs are being moved to countries all over the world .

    2. ” recession will be quite nasty”…
      Agreed, L C

If I may add, having a large down payment on one’s purchase of a home helps also in one’s choice of a home, irrespective of one’s career choice.

      1. Yes, a large down payment helps affordability.

Human nature can be an odd, self-destructive force. I fear that 1) loan officers are doing some fancy footwork to make the debt ratios work 2) homeowners are taking on too much debt without leaving a sufficient cushion.

My concern isn’t totally about income. I’ve known highly paid tradesmen in two income families who were up to their eyeballs in debt and experienced painful financial difficulty after the first week or so of a labour dispute. It was suprising how radical and angry some off them became when faced with acute financial stress.

        1. “Large down payment” of 25% of home cost avoids a C.M.H.C. fee. Also people don’t often put cash on account when the mortgage renewal date occurs, this can take years off the mortgage. The banks don’t encourage it because they get more interest money.

Also people spend a lot on eating out or even on small take out things, like drinks. It is sad how some don’t like to cook. Then there is the squandering of cash at entertainment venues. Then cars are also a big expense. Some people have to drive the latest models. ” Acute financial stress” is a self inflicted wound.

  7. Canada continues to be the place where wealth, investment, innovation, invention, freedom and liberty go to die. I am dumping my whole portfolio of Canadian bolivars today.

  8. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

“It’s the economy, stupid” is a slight variation of the phrase “The economy, stupid”, which James Carville had coined as a campaign strategist of Bill Clinton’s successful 1992 presidential campaign against sitting president George H. W. Bush.

Carville’s original phrase was meant for the internal audience of Clinton’s campaign workers as one of the three messages to focus on, the other two messages being “Change vs. more of the same” and “Don’t forget health care.”

Not a fan of Carville or Bill Clinton but there is a political merit in these messages. They hit the essentials of ordinary people. No reason why they won’t resonate in Canada…….. they might even be the reason (more or less) for Ford’s win in Ontario.

  9. Come off it. The Bank of Canada was never going to blow up Trudeaupia’s own banks by bringing interest rates back to a reasonable level. Not while the Libranos are still in power.

They’re keeping their powder dry in case Ottawa falls into the hands of patriotic conservatives, who can then be blamed for the ensuing financial crisis.

That’s the plan in the United States—jack up interest rates, cause another recession, blame Trump, replace him with someone more to the liking of George Soros and Beijing.

    1. I see you’ve already planned your finger-pointing ahead of time. A pragmatic instance of Conservative Persecution Complex.

      1. No government governs for long without the consent of its creditors. As long as there is money to pay the big men with guns, the consent of the governed is immaterial.

  10. I do NOT believe the CPI number. My own tracking of food gas insurance cellphone restaurants entertainment has it over 7%. And that’s not even factoring in the hidden inflation of smaller portions and slack fill in packaging. StatsCan lies to protect the gov of the day. That’s why you get Doug Ford – pocketbook politics resonate with folks who just know viscerally that THE RENT IS TOO DAMM HIGH.

    1. Forget the CPI. look at the currency and how much was printed, digitally or otherwise. Only an increase in the money supply can increase inflation. Of course extreme debt can also push prices higher. Inflation, the easy and simple definition, too much money chasing too few goods. An excess of money drives prices up. Basic f-ing economics. If you want a lesson in economics, here is one. From 1970 to 1980 the dollar lost 100% of it’s purchasing power. Any idiot who says otherwise is an idiot. I worked for a US company and our costs in Canada were increased by 100% during that time period Housing costs went from, get this, I paid 14, 500 for my first house and sold it for 55,000 in less than five years. That continued until mortgage rates hit 19% plus five years later. As I have said many times. Canadians are STUPID.

  11. Guess I’ll be sticking with my variable rate mortgage for a while.

Maybe we should all chip in and get Trudeau a fiddle.

    1. Maybe we should all chip in and get Trudeau a fiddle.

Nah. Knowing His Exalted Geniusness, he’d think it’s a ukulele and start strumming it. Worse yet, he might start singing Tiptoe Through The Tulips like Tiny Tim. (The latter might not be so bad, so long as it’s better than Soapy’s attempts at hog-calling.)

  12. Keep in mind that Trudeau and his high school cabinet “stimulated” the economy using a combination of the Canada Child Benefit, massive debt, and large public sector hiring.

This is how amateurs operate, and the chickens will come home to roost eventually.

    1. Since Trump took over Canadas GDP growth has exceeded our neighbors to the south.

  13. Let me explain what must appear as complex rocket science to the current leaders and bureaucrats of Canada … when government seizes the very last dime of the people’s already meager disposable income … retail sales dry up and go away. Then, businesses dry up and go away. Then fewer people have jobs. Then, your economy is crushed into a recession … or worse.

OTOH … when a BOLD, BRASH, Tweeting-President slashes taxes for BOTH individual citizens and businesses and removes business-crushing government regulations … disposable income increases (even if it is “crumb”-scaled) … business activity increases … government receipts and revenues actually INCREASE! Everyone prospers. All boats are lifted on a rising tide of trade and exchange.

Rocket science, OTOH … is much more complicated.

    1. Kenji, as I have said many times, Canadians are stupid. If that were not so we would not be seeing what we have now.

    2. “Tweeting-President slashes taxes for BOTH individual citizens and businesses and removes business-crushing government regulations … disposable income increases (even if it is “crumb”-scaled) … business activity increases”

Not when those taxes come back as import taxes and dollar instability. And out of control spending.

  14. from the article;

” …One explanation for the poor retail numbers may have been poor weather, Statistics Canada said. … ”

    hahaha! yeah right !

let’s pretend Trudeau and his liberals are not to blame and let’s pretend a planet warmer or colder by 1/5th of one degrees caused the Canadian economy to slow down

Is not the USA on the same planet? why is their economy doing great while ours is slowing down?, does global warming/climate change stop at the US border?

  15. Retail sales are not a convincing metric of prosperity. At best, they are downstream of prosperity. GDP growth and investment are far more meaningful metrics.

    1. the article is not only about retail sales,

it mentions the dollar, inflation, rate hikes, mortages , weak employment data and many other things that indicate the Canadian economy is not doing so well

      common think like a scientist!

    2. US Auto Tariffs
Static metrics are useless… The dynamics of competition by US Automakers will have already found cheaper sources and Canada will have to replace their Joint Auto Manufacturing jobs……. Even the threat of Auto Tariff’s will trigger a Project team to reduce costs.. Dynamics are a bitch.

The EU tariff in Auto’s will be born by the ! % (Elites) that can afford a Benz… It will be a badge of wealth.. Not effecting the deplorables who drive the economy in Trump’s America.. Targeting is a bitch…

PPL who buy Harley’s in Canada will still buy & new Markets in N & S Korea would love to buy a Harley

The Bourbon tariffs will be a boom to the small US distillery’s that don’t sell in Canada, or the EU.. The Global players are the losers

      JMHO

    3. Record low jobless rate in 44 years, highest growth rate in 15, retail sales rushing up, all that means nothing? Bitch please.

        1. Given that one of the articles linked in the original post is about US… never mind you clearly are too slow to keep up. Just keep regurgitating librano talking points.

          1. The point is:

            – canadas unemployment is a 40 year low
            – GDP growth has exceeded American growth for the past couple years

Our economy is NOT in shambles. There are signs of weakening strength, but it’s not down the tubes.

          2. No it is not in shambles yet, thanks to incredible work Mr Harper’s government has done when everyone else has been in recession. But we’re getting there and picking a trade fight with Trump will take us there for sure. In any case, even before Trudeau’s latest burst of idiocy Canada’s GDP growth in the last three quarters was barely above zero: https://tradingeconomics.com/canada/gdp-growth all that while the anemic expansion in GDP has been driven largely by growth in public sector while standards of living for the rest of the country have been falling due to increasing housing, food and energy prices.

And all this isn’t a point of anything, it is merely your attempt to control the narrative following, my reply to the another demonstration of stupid by your pall UnMedicated.

          3. Colonialista – may I suggest an alternate phrasing?

Rome wasn’t destroyed in a day.

          4. That’s the best you can do a$$wipe? Ok then you’re just a POS demagogue like UnMedicated. no problem you will be treated accordingly.

  16. Growing the economy from the heart out isn’t working, maybe it’s time to try some other more useful innard.
    The gizzard, perhaps.

  17. Canada leads g7 in GDP growth for 2017! (3.0% no less)

    SDA comments section: *tumbleweeds*

USA leads g7 in GDP growth for 2018! (Likely)

SDA comments section: MR TRUMP HOW MANY VIRGIN SACRIFICES DO YOU WANT?

    1. All of the Trudeau changes aren’t in place yet. Once they’ve all taken effect we will resume 3rd world status. Similarly, the Trump Boom is just starting.

Which raises an interesting question, how long after an election does the newly elected one/party have to take full responsibility for owning the economy? Can someone from Ontario please advise (given the history of the last decade, and how it was always the previous group’s fault).
