      Even the scrappy Stones learned from the Beatles brand of rock music which “sampled” classical music and instruments. The transition from a mellow melody of classical horns, into a raucous rock tempo is fabulous!

      This stuff was from the Victorian era. Just imagine, no modern conveniences like theatre lighting, microphones etc. B A is right, they don’t do operettas anymore. What do we know that might come close? Perhaps, the musicals like ” Jesus Christ Superstar” , ” The Sound of Music” , “Grease” etc.

      Some thoughts about doing this stuff: personally when I was involved in this production I immediately started to regret it. The long practices, the dedication to sewing our own navy blue colored bell bottomed trousers, and the white sailor shirts, finding the correct footwear. The sailor hats were bulk- purchased, so that was the easiest part. The costumes for the main characters were rented and made to fit and were seemingly authentic 19th century. They were colorful and beautiful.

      The fellow students had voices like angels. We didn’t practice with them until dress rehearsal. Of course we got to learn their parts, out of sheer boredom of our own repetitious roles. The show came together beautifully, and was fantastic! My misgivings were washed away.

      The drama teachers were exhausted by showtime. One played the piano beautifully for us. The show really depended on whether she showed up. We had to do our best for Miss Dee and Miss Isabelle and all the people that came. It was a packed, full house.

      As I said, I have zero in the talent department musically, but was appreciative of surrounding myself with geniuses who did. It was sheer joy!
