1. That stupid twit got 160K likes?

   First of all, the very idea of “cultural appropriation” being a bad thing is idiotic. Haven’t you heard that imitation is the greatest flattery?

   Mr. Lam, if you claim the cheongsam is your culture, then obviously English is not. Your very act of writing English is cultural appropriation. Secondly, by the transliteration of your surname, I would surmise you are Cantonese, (a Mandarin speaker would render it as Lin) and therefore most likely without a drop of Manchurian blood in you. You may not know that the Han Chinese were conquered by the Manchu in 1644 and forced to adopt many Manchu customs, among them the pigtail. However, the cheongsam was not forced on them, but “appropriated” because it so much flatters the Chinese figure. So as a Han, you don’t even have a right to claim the cheongsam as “your culture,” or complaining about anyone else “appropriating” it.

5. The bullying of identity politics is very well led by PM Dressup who might be one of the most insulting and divisive national “leaders” in the world. Ironic that he would probably be quite comfortable wearing a cheongsam.

8. How cute is it that a “Jeremy” is lecturing anglos about cultural appropriation of Chinese culture. “Jeremy” is the Anglo appropriation of the Hebrew Jeremiah. So, there’s lots for little Jeremy to think about there while he deals with the Cheeto cheesy finger problem…as Chinese as that snack is.

   2. Good point. I have frequently wanted to tell those accusing others of “cultural appropriation” that they should stop, for example, using indoor plumbing, since it was invented by Caucasians. The same goes for electricity (not invented by anybody, but applied by Caucasians), natural gas, computers, semiconductors whether in computers or elsewhere, vaccines . . .

      2. Actually, the generation of electricity was definitely invented by the West.

         British James Clerk Maxwell combined four existing equations on electricity and magnetism, made a slight correction (which made all the difference in the world) and the result was probably the greatest achievement of 19th century physics, what came to be known as “the Maxwell equations.” They showed the interdependent relationship of electricity and magnetism. Specifically, that a moving magnetic field creates electricity.

         Maxwell provided the theoretical basis, but it took years of dedicated effort by several American engineers to create a commercially viable alternating current generator. Eventually that led to the availability of cheap electricity (and hence source of energy) in every American home. I nominate that availability as the greatest contributor to the comfort and vastly improved conditions of the average person. And it is exactly what the pointy headed intellectuals wish to destroy.

9. If you fully believe in the idea of her body, her choice and scream sexist at anyone who disagrees but also want to force women and girls to wear only culturally appropriate clothing and scream racist at anyone who disagrees…then you might be a progressive.

10. It just occured to me, did any progressives call out H.Clinton about cultural appropriation for her frequent wearing of Mandarin collars? Do you think a progressive identitarian who did would get much as many atta boys from progressives?

11. Good lord, but people have too much frickin’ time on their hands.

    The cheongsam (Cantonese) / qipao (Mandarin) aren’t even popular with modern Chinese women. My very-Chinese wife has one, and I’ve never even seen her wear it once and resists the suggestion when I make it. This high-school girl rocks her dress, and she should be proud to wear it. People sh**ting on her for wearing it should be ashamed of themselves, and I’m glad she has the spine to resist them.

    1. Thank you. You probably know all these already. Cheongsam literally means long shirt, in typical Cantonese hyperbole. (I am one, so I can say that.) Qipao literally means “Flag outer garment.” The Manchus divided their own people into eight “Flags”, and they identified themselves as belonging to which color flag. So the word flag came to be used to identify Manchus. Qipao, therefore, conclusively identifies itself as Manchu.

       Interestingly, it became fashionable after the fall of the Manchu dynasty. I believe the lease territories in Shanghai started that. If you watch any movies on Shanghai of the twenties (上海灘) you would see all the ladies wear it. And Shanghai was the acme of fashion. They still do at formal dinners or on special occasions like Lunar New Year.

       1. Historically, it seems the changes in command in China were linked almost exclusively to invasion. The Manchus were just the last in the chain before the republican revolution. But I wasn’t aware of that aspect of the dresses, so thanks. 🙂 My wife is Han, but I doubt she knows the origin of the word as being a Manchu signifier…

          …and now I have these visions of Chinese ladies dropping the gang signs at each other à la Bloods vs Crips…

17. Anyone objecting to a Caucasian girl wearing a cheongsam as cultural appropriation should look at what the Asian girls wear for wedding dresses. “Over the top” doesn’t even begin to describe some of the western bridal ensembles they so love.
