If you need surgery to be who you claim to be, then you are not who you claim to be.
I can claim my laptop is a refrigerator, but if it takes many dozens of modifications, dozens of parts must be added ( or removed) and many thousands of dollars for it to be able to cool one can of beer, then my laptop was never a refrigerator, and still is not one.

The argument’s often used that they need all that cutting and patching to be “themselves”, to live out their “truth”. Of course, whatever that “truth” is seems to be flexible and only they know what it is.
As for your laptop, whenever one of my machines acts up, I threaten to turn it into a toaster, after which it seems to work properly, for some reason.
