Contrary to many conservative commentators yesterday and today, I’m going to agree with the Globe’s Editorial and say Trudeau punting on the UN is a good move. Making the promise in the first place was stupid, but then, we’ve come to expect that from Mr. Grape Nehi.
They looked around the world and couldn’t find any peace to keep 🙂
Soldiers have learned to hate peacekeeping. Having the UN in charge of troops is a bad idea.
The left loves the idea of peacekeeping even if in practice it has been a bit suspect. The Nobel Peace Prize earned by Lester Pearson for his peacekeeping plan at the time of the Suez crisis more or less screwed the British but I suppose that was likely the goal. Liberal anti-British feelings didn’t start with the Trudeaux.

Lester Pearson was an able and accomplished diplomat and deserving of his Nobel prize, certainly considering some of the later winners. His peace plan worked for about a decade, but once the Arab states decided they were strong enough to have another go at Israel, the UN was bluntly told to stand down and let the fighting begin. This was and is the flaw in UN peacekeeping. As A veteran and seasoned diplomat Peason understood these shortcomings.It was his successor with a palatable loathing for the military who made it the cornerstone of Canadian defense policy and Liberals after Trudeau shamelessly promoted the myth of Canadian “Peace Keepers” not warriors.
The idea of Canadian participation should have ended with the horror of Rwanda or Bosnia and to a certain extent it did, Jean Chretien cut back dramatically on involvement.
So leave it to Jr to utter some very foolish promises that have to be covered by someone else. I was expecting far worse and the $15 m for female training, well other rat holes are just as wasteful. Let us hope this is all it is, no more missions to African hell holes, where UN troops sit around and gawk at wholesale slaughter, or come under fire with orders not to retaliate.
It wasn’t even Pearson’s idea. It was the US Secretary of State that told him to initiate it so the US could bail out of their opposition to the Brits and French. I believe it was John Foster Dulles but I could be wrong.

Lance, I am agreeing with you and the Globe editorial that the Liberals should have punted the peace keeping promise, but they did not punt hard enough. They still retained some third of the promise. The should have repudiated all of it. Peacekeeping is stupid. It is dangerous when truly needed, and ultimately inneffective in the long haul.
