It’s all well and good to end the requirements for useless ingredients for streaming services, but why turn around and pay streamers directly for stuff no one watches?
The federal government will “eliminate” the financial contribution requirement for streamers set by the CRTC and replace it with government funding, it said in a court document.
Nonetheless, it’s anyone’s guess as to whether this will actually happen or not.
The office of Culture Minister Marc Miller did not immediately respond when asked to clarify the government’s stance or state whether the government plans to eliminate the contribution requirement permanently or temporarily.

Here’s a thought: trash the CRTC’s mandate and reserve to strictly licensing of frequencies minus all of the censorship garbage. Less communism.
Tax it til you kill it.
But….but…..they are using gov’t dollars to “Support Canadian Culture!”
News flash – Canadian Culture is what real live Canadians are willing to spend their own shekels and their own time consuming.
Not what they are forced to pay for.
By that measurement, Landman resonates more with Canadian Culture than the Indigenous Network, and the Cooking Channel is more a reflection of Canadian Culture than the CBC.
They are supporting only a very narrow segment of Canadian Culture. The part a certain type of leftist embraces.
I don’t mind these voices having their landscapes. I do mind having to pay almost entirely for them, while other aspects of Canadian Culture that may not fit a certain Laurentian Elite Narrative of what Canada “should” be are ignored.
Some may say that gov’t or rulers have always supported the Arts, and cite Mozart as an example.
Yes, but Mozart was the rock star of his day. People flocked to his concerts and actually enjoyed them – they were not there because it was “important” or “groundbreaking” or “inclusive” or “daring and provocative.”
They were there because what he did resonated with the average person.
Plus….well….sorry to make the comparison to CBC, Indigenous, or French Language programming, but….
He was really good at what he did.
While at a wedding a few years back, during the dinner portion of the evening, I was seated next to a table of people who didn’t quite fit in with the rest of the crowd. While everyone else was adorned in suits and gowns, this table looked like they carpooled from an “Earth Day” celebration or “Raging Grannies” protest at the legislature. All of then were early to mid 60’s, unkempt and generally sloppy in appearance. The women were all morbidly obese, wearing overstretched polyester slacks and washed out blouses. Hair look as it never saw a comb. The “head” of this group was the quintessential NDPer. Worn and torn corduroy pants, a Columbia shirt and a fisherman’s vest with 42 pockets. Messy beard and long hair. Eavesdropping, I listened to the leader, wax eloquently about the CBC and how it does such great service to the country, all the while the fat frumpies nodded in unison. Not a widget maker among them, just fat, lazy takers of government largesse. Ever since this evening, anytime I think of government mandated “culture”, I have the image of these fellow wedding guests tormenting my brain.
Culture Minister? Isn’t that racist?
AKA as “Backdoor Content Control”.
So instead of taxing Canadian consumers of what they want in order to get Canadian Content such as Atwood’s Turgid Prose, everyone gets to pay, even if they don’t have Netflix/Prime/Disney+
Stupid is as stupid does.
