Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Spanish Civil War 2.0…
Nice bit of Fake News from Reuters when they imply the 43% turnout is from opponents boycotting the referendum and not Spanish Shocktroopers violently attacking those attempting to vote.
Gosh, Kate! You had me going for a second.
I read your title incorrectly. I thought it said that California declared independence.
We could only wish 🙂
When do the EU tanks start rolling through the streets of Barcelona? It’s the 1950’s all over again for Socialist totalitarianism. Catalonia has already been ‘claimed’ as a Satellite state of the Union of European Socialist States. Time for the Catalonians to get ‘Back in the UESSU’ …
“Well the Catalan girls really knock me out, they leave the West behind, and Barca girls make me sing and shout, that Girona’s always on my my my mind … miiiiind”
Well ?
http://www.keyt.com/news/california/petition-drive-begins-to-divide-california-into-three-states/646684046
Sounds good to me. Although two-States would be more manageable.
Sounds good, Kenji. Would work well for the Donald as well.
Maybe we could do the same and divide Toronto from the rest of Ontario.
Problem solved.
Considering how Lotusland continually ignores the rest of the province, I think B. C. should separate from Vancouver/Victoria.
This is just symptomatic of the rise of the city states. Around the globe people are affiliating more and more closely with the large city nearest to them and less loyal/committed to the province or nation they are part of. It is IMO why the 150 celebrations were so weak compared to 1967.
It is likely that other euro cities start demanding more autonomy in the coming years – Milan, Florence being two.
No….this is symptomatic of centralized government. It is a symptom of being ruled from far away places. It is a symptom of top down, disconnected governments. And it was only getting worse in the EU with Brussels calling the shots. It is one of the main reasons why the USSR fell apart.
Mankind is “tribal” … we naturally associate in relatively small, manageable, groups who share our values. Distant, disconnected, disinterested governance will NEVER survive. Globalism is a JOKE. The EU is a JOKE. Humans don’t live this way … and they shouldn’t live that way.
“It is IMO why the 150 celebrations were so weak compared to 1967.”
’67 was Canada’s 100th anniversary. What makes thinking celebrating 150 is a thing to do? What’s next, 175?
That said, in the modern world with the military technology in existence a “city state” doesn’t have a chance against conquest by a well armed super power nation state.
You must know how much it costs to develop a new generation of jet strike/fighter or main battle tank, yes? Few nations can even afford it.
And naval power? Forget about it. Did you know that most cities and human populations on this planet are on the coast?
No, a “city state” was possible back in the day of swords and spears but in this era a move toward city states would be just begging to get trashed by ambitious aggressor nations like Russia or China who maintain their nations or taken over from within by Islam.
Also it should be noted that their is a move afoot to create a One World Government. Ever hear of UN Agenda 21?
I am thinking we will be having a vote in Sask and Alberta about 2020 !
I think that many of the people commenting on this story are missing the point. There seems to be a sense that Catalunya is in some freedom-loving rebellion against the distant and dirigiste EU-superstate. Hardly the case. Like the Scottish Nationalists, they wish to fly their own flag in Brussels, not leave it for genuine independence. And like the nationalists in Scotland, and in Quebec, they have shed their conservative nationalist allies and embraced the romanticized leftist narrative of the pre-Spanish Civil War era.
Gord Tulk *may* be on to something here, but like the Catalans and the Scots, I don’t think that the Lombards and the Venetians want to let go of the EU to make their way in the world.
It is my fervent hope and prayer that the people of Catalonia will have their democratic desires respected without any bloodshed or tumult.
It is also my fervent hope and prayer that, one day, the democratic wishes of the people of Western Canada have their desire to form an independent state will be respected as well.
Lord knows I am more than ready to respect the democratic desires of La Belle Province to shove off!
December 15, 1912 Canadian Milch Cow cartoon was published. No separation vote then. Won’t be one now.
This is like Canada separating from Quebec. Catalan is the money center of Spain and pays all the bills pretty much. All I hope is that this goes well for them and Quebec starts up the independence movement again.
Not quite. Catalonia represents 20% of Spain’s economy. The bigger issue is the Spanish government spends only 11% on this region. It is closer to Alberta leaving Canada and taking its transfer payment contributions with it.
That is what I was wondering about. Is there any evidence or links for this? In any case, anything that weakens the EUSSR and strengthens local autonomy is a good thing.
I second all three motions.
Exactly. It is globalism and relatively benign central governments- no one is going to go “Roman” on Barcelona. The catalans will remain in the EU.
“No, a “city state” was possible back in the day of swords and spears but in this era a move toward city states would be just begging to get trashed by ambitious aggressor nations like Russia or China who maintain their nations or taken over from within by Islam.”
Singapore is doing fine. Dubai is getting better and better. City-states can enter into alliances you know.
I think and dearly hope Gord Tulk is right. The nation-state as we know it is getting tattier and tattier. Hail the rise of city-states!
Re all the talk about Quebec: Le Belle province is believe it or not arguably the best fiscally-managed right now.
Funny how our socialist comrades are all for Democracy, until the voters chose a different choice than the annoited ones.
Then its send in the thugs to disrupt the voting process and threaten to imprison those who actually ask the citizens for their opinion.
Kleptocracy is Grand.
i am all for Catalonia separating from Spain, let it be a vicious ugly morass..to ease the way when Western Canadians learns to do maths.
“Maybe we could do the same and divide Toronto from the rest of Ontario.”
Next day I will volunteer to build the wall… although Mississauga, Brampton Milton, … can we include these with Moronto?
If only the Catalonia’s weren’t a bunch of commies I might be giving a damn about their desires.
City states in the classic sense isn’t what I mean. The new city states will rely on larger unions fir defense and things like currency (which is becoming antiquated in the Internet age) but have far more jurisdictional control over fiscal, taxation and infrastructure issues.
See there Gord Tulk? UnMe approves! Ain’t you proud?
Singapore is at the end of a peninsula(coastal) and visitors there talk of the citizens as birds living in a gilded cage.(no liberty)
“The new city states will rely on larger unions fir defense and things like currency”
~Gord Tulk(Utopian)
Gee wiz. Gord Tulk. Then the nation states that give them defence, security, and currency do it for free and ask about their security concerns and things like interest rate input and currency valuation as it affects city state policy?!
GOLLY GEE WHIZ! That’s FREEDOM!/
I need some of what you’re smoking ’cause my Captain Morgan’s Spiced rum doesn’t make things as rosy as you see them.
The 13 American Colonial States need not have fought the Revolutionary War at all! Needless bloodshed.
All they had to do was become city states and everything would have been Just Jake. Yup./
’till Nazi Germany came along 150 years latter or Soviet Russia came along 175 years later after conquering all of Europe and Asia, whichever was first to develop the Atom Bomb
Are all of these city states going to have Atom Bombs and missiles as platforms to deliver them for defence or do we have to pretend that nobody invented them in the first place or that these city states are all protected under a One World Government with maximum Freedom for All?
“Le Belle province is believe it or not arguably the best fiscally-managed right now.”
Pst… it’s “LA belle province”.
Thanks for writing that now I don’t have to. A plague on both their houses, I say.
