  1. On a similar vane, I saw a story today about how Ontario Power Generation is going to be turning the old Nanticoke coal fired power station site into a solar plant. The coal plant had a capacity of 4000 MW. The solar plant they will build on the site will have a capacity of …..44 MW, at solar noon, on a clear day in July, less at other times of the day/year.

  2. It’s not the government’s responsibility to retrofit your house, even if the gov’t was swimming in money, nor to replace your 1950’s style single pane windows, nor to insulate your house, nor to subsidise electric vehicles in any way, or to “do something” for you.
I don’t think it’s their job to educate your kids, or cure your cancer either. The other day here at SDA I’d mentioned it’s easy to be in gov’t when you’re broke, all you need to do is say “no”. It’s much easier than trying to appease everyone with their hands out begging for a program.

  3. I find it hilarious that a person who wants to “go off the grid” presumably to be more independent of government and big brother wants a subsidy from government to do so.

  4. Quite apart from the honesty in Kenny’s answer the fact is that it is not my responsibility to pay for your power. If you want solar panels then you are free to buy solar panels on your own dime. Save your pennies or take out a loan.

    “44 MW, at solar noon”
so only about 12% efficiency from today’s technology… 88% of the solar energy
is reradiated as heat which does what for global warming?
i’ll give you a hint… heat is warm.

  6. But … but … but … what about all the subsidies that BIG OIL gets … like tax loopholes for the cost of drilling holes in Mother Earth. Why is BIG OIL given the peoples money to PAY for their drill rigs ?! Why are my taxes higher … because BIG OIL gets to write off their business expenses ?! (Sarc. off).

  7. Twelve years ago I had the idea of installing solar panels and take my house completely off the grid. I priced it out and it would have cost me (not including installation) about $25-30K to outfit my place with enough solar panels to power everything and go completely off grid (I had to also put a bank of batteries in the basement in order to store the power for those long winter nights). It was a straight math problem from there amortization cost vs what I was paying for electricity. It would take about 25 years to recover the initial outlay. Then I read that those solar panels wear out around year 20 (and that was best case scenario)….So, it wasn’t really cost effective–it was a money loser.

  8. Go ahead. Danielle Smith is back where she should have stayed, doing something she can do well enough.

  9. Smith is a solid voice for conservatives. We’re lucky to have her.
In Canada there are probably 2 or 3 conservatives in her league.
Andrew Lawton out of London On is one.

  10. Smith was terrible as head of WR after her first election with the WR. I was relieved when she ‘left’. And by ‘left’ I mean ‘backstabbed her way out’.

  11. That’s a universal answer to every request for every new program or goodie and from all levels of all governments in the Western World. We should certainly hear it more often. It would make “All Candidates meetings / debates” rather pointless.

  12. Jason detected that he was being trolled by the caller, and he gave the perfect answer. He’s a savvy politician unlike Danielle.

  13. Yea the caller was an idiot. Pay for your own alternative energy. You will then not have “smart” meters dictating when you can use your electricity. Nobody will be telling you what you can do or can’t do with your electricity.
And also the caller was talking about those grid tie in systems which are stupid. You’re still connected helping the electric company that wants to control your electrical usage. Plus when the power goes out your panels are useless because they stop working too. So just disconnect totally and make your own power and then only you control your power usage.

  14. Ooooooh. Conservative promises, followed by liberal spending when elected. Think I’ve seen this movie before. Put me down as skeptical.
I’ll believe it when I get to keep more than 2/3 of my paycheque for my own use.

  15. SHOCKED!!! – there were TWO truths in there: “No” and “Broke”. What’s even MORE shocking is that a politician answered a question, definitively, with only a three-word answer.
Shiny’s answer would’ve been preferred – I suffer insomnia, and his political dronings-on are very effective for putting me to sleep. Wonder if that’s what he had in mind?

  16. C’mon now…
My experience tells me there are at least a dozen of us here in Canada.
As per Kenny, never had much respect for him. A big thumbs up for that reply steeped in reality, though. Sadly, nothing seems to turn off today’s voter more than reality.

  17. AWESOME Answer and 100% on the Buck….my buck and yours and everyone else.
You want to go off grid…do the bloody math you entitled MORON:
5000 Watts (48V Type) so about 25K just for Panels, add 5-6K for 12 6V Surrette RE Batteries, add 3K+ for a Xantrex Inverter, re-wire your house for 48V, reduce or eliminate all your ghost power, buy a Propane Fridge, all lighting to LED…yea, it ain’t CHEAP..I know, I’ve looked at it for years and no matter what, it’s simply not ..COST EFFECTIVE.. Not that I or anyone else wouldn’t love to be “off grid”
But then, whatcha gonna do in Winter hmmm.?
Bottom line is this: If I cant afford it, Why the F should I subsidize YOU to go Solar..??

  18. Alberta has been blessed with hugely abundant access to cheap power now. It’s called coal. The Alberta Gov’t would be much smarter investing on making that energy source work than unreliable uneconomic grid killing wind and solar. Coal is Alberta’s advantage – and it’s folly not to use it. CO2 is plant food with very limited “green house” earth warming capacity. I would hope that someone like Kenney has the brains to see that and act appropriately to help us avoid becoming Ontario 2.0
