But it’s on the App Store….

I have a great idea! How about I let China know everything about me so that I can look googly-eyed on my selfie.
Security of your person and privacy is and always has been your job. It’s a silly request, but I’d ask that people start taking that job seriously. Especially if you’re one of the special ones who demand access to the company network on your own device.
Things you should think about before installing anything:
1. Do I really need this application?
2. What do I know about the people who wrote this app?
3. If I install this app, do I know what it is really doing?
4. Is there anything past, present or future that I wouldn’t want Russia, China, the kid down the block or the mafia to know about me on this device?
5. If it requires a network connection, where and who in the physical world am I giving that information?
YMMV based on your level of paranoia, but those are my guidelines.

  1. And then there are those security cameras connected to your home network. It may be “cool” to watch those cameras on your smartphone, but it can also be a backdoor to your network. If you think your password protects you, think again.

  2. This is quite correct. Anyone who uses their ‘real’ name on the internet and posts personal information like residence address, phone number, birth date, etc. is just being foolish. Once you’ve lost privacy and security you can’t get it back. There is no way I want or need a ‘smart’ phone or wi-fi or any of those other so-called ‘necessities’ of the digital world.

  3. Any cell phone.
With any cell phone they know where you are 24/7…even old flip-phone cell phone if it does not have a GPS in it, they can triangulate from 3 cell phone towers and know pretty much where you are…they also know where and when you took a picture with your phone; a code with this information is embedded with the photo.
    Almost as bad with Laptops,
when I bring my laptop to my girlfriend’s place 60 km from my place, and I visit some news sites, they tell me the weather/temperature in her town even though I never told anyone where I was with my laptop.
They can turn on the microphone and/or camera on your laptop and yu would never know they are watching / lstening.
by “they” I mean anyone who knows how to hack a laptop from large companies like microsoft, APple or the CIA, NSA or just some 15 year old hacker in Canada, USA, Russia or anywhere else.
In Canada the goverment can read your personal emails, at least it was legal about 10 years ago.

  4. my flip-phone does not take pics
there are so few cell towers where I am that triangulation is nearly impossible and the GPS tracking on my flip-phone is turned off
my desktop business computer runs w98 and stays disconnected from the net
‘they’ can tell where your laptop is by the IP address at the wi-fi you connect to.
Just put a piece of tape over the laptop camera
most hackers are looking for ‘low hanging fruit’ don’t make it easy for them
If you believe the NSA/CIA has interest in you’re activities you’ve got much bigger problems

  5. “…If you believe the NSA/CIA has interest in your activities you’ve got much bigger problems.”
I suppose that’s true whether your belief is correct or not.

  6. I’ve been putting a piece of tape over the laptop camera since 2010.
One does not have to be involved in anything illegal to be spied on by the FBI or NSA or any of those agencies…because in this crazy age of extreme leftism, anyone leaning right politically or anyone wanting less immigrants and less refugees is considered suspect by the liberal establishment.
I occasionally read articles at American Renaissance, my IP address is probably on a list with a note that says more or less : white supremacist/ possible white supremacist terrorist.
