Last night, Streep received a Lifetime Achievement award at the Golden Globes, and chose the moment to launch a very personal attack on Donald Trump.
She began by saying that Hollywood, foreigners and the press are ‘the most vilified segments of American society right now’.
At which point the cameras panned out to hundreds of the richest, most privileged people in American society sitting in the audience in their $10,000 tuxedos and $20,000 dresses, loudly cheering this acknowledgement of their dreadful victimhood.
She then said that if all the ‘outsiders and foreigners’ were kicked out of Hollywood, ‘you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.’
Wow.
I haven’t heard such elitist snobbery since Hillary Clinton branded Trump supporters ‘a basket of deplorables’.
If show biz collapsed these people would cut each others’ throats to get parts in dinner theater. And there are millions to replace them, thousands more talented.

I listened to her on CTV News this PM. In the movie ”The Bridges of Madison County” she plays the role of an adulterous farm wife who meets a photographer (Clint Eastwood) and cheats on her husband who is away at an agricultural gathering.
In the movie ”Ironweed” she plays the part of a homeless floozy who travels with a hobo played by Jack Nicholson. At one point she takes one of the hobos (Tom Waits?) in the back seat of an abandoned car and gives him a ”willie” in exchange for favors.
In other words, it’s OK to play the part of a floozy, get paid millions for it, as long as it’s acting. But Donald Trump, now that’s a different set of rules!!
I didn’t watch the Globes but from what I have heard or read here and from other media sites today, this incident just reaffirms why I no longer watch awards shows. Why oh why can’t these entertainers – who are really just people who “pretend for a living” or live in an “aura of make believe” – just thank their fans, colleagues, the Academy, Foreign Press, or Rickey Gervais and get off the effin stage.
