Alberta Referendum Watch

A comments thread to kick things off. Polls close in a few hours, so we welcome poll reports, predictions and so forth.

The unofficial count of Election Day ballots is completed after voting closes on Monday, October 19. The count for advance voting and special ballots begins at 5:00pm on October 19. Unofficial results will be available at https://www.elections.ab.ca/elections/election-results/ as counts are completed, by question, by elector division, and by voting method. The count must be completed within 48 hours of close of voting.

In the days following Election Day, returning office staff review the materials from the unofficial count to verify the results. These confirmations are then reported as official results and released to the public. This is known as the Official Announcement of the Results and will take place on October 29 at 10:00 am.

Keep it civil and on topic. Harangues and flamewars will be deleted.

Update: Elections Alberta has extended poll hours at a number of locations that opened late, so results will be delayed.

  1. This will be an 80: 20 blowout for the people who want Alberta to stay in Canada or think they do. The worst thing about it will be that Ottawa will double down on the abuse as abuser is always do when they get away with it, and as a result, the long-term consequence for the so-called pro- Canada people will be to move Alberta independence along.

The whole thing is so horrifyingly stupid I’m starting to like the phrase “I can’t even”. The question presents two non-mutually exclusive Options ; one side had all the money, the professional assistance, and the media support and the other side was basically run by people who say trust me I can make it work without any idea how to actually do that. Ugh.

    1. Yup, central planning fanatics are likely to give Danielle a rude awakening that we’re all good little commies just waiting to be plucked. Some wise questions that should result in a mandate. More likely we’re going to get crickets.

      To eat.

      1. Honest question from a long suffering Ontarian; how much of the divide will be urban vs rural divide?

        1. Many polls have shown a split between urban and rural, but the weighing of those polls is *I think* dependent upon who is asking or paying for the poll. The separation supporters are more prevalent in rural. I expect Edmonton will be the most pro-Canada jurisdiction.
To nobodies surprise really… and I have no idea who will win though it’s no secret that I hope we vote to begin conversations to separate, and that we do as well vote to separate next spring.
No results released before 11 pm Ontario time, and then…

          1. Agreed. One third of the urban early-voters look to be first generation Canucks. Another third are easily scared seniors. I don’t know how many of the remainder read and think before voting.

      2. Precisely the way to get the NDP back in so precisely wrong. I think the Yes X 8 was instructive and telling.
Imho, AB separatists jumped the gun, not understanding it’s separation if necessary, but not necessarily.

    2. I don’t think it will be as bad as 80-20, but it will not pass.

It will be worse if it ever comes up again because many of us will leave for the USA.

      1. It’s becoming the overwhelming power paradigm, big city life the furthest removed from human reality.

    3. There are ten questions. All the focus has been on number 10…..but all the rest are extremely important.

      1. Four of the ten questions require the remaining 9 Canadian provinces to agree to amend the Constitution.
        Good luck with that.

        1. And that is what will continue to grow the separatist side. And really, that is a bit of propaganda that the Constitution would need to be amended. After all, it is just a “paper promise” to begin with.

      2. I think the other 9 questions were excellent, although I echo the sentiments that none of the provinces will align to push back on constitutional questions. The stupid commie constitution crap foisted on us by PET/Cretin is worthless and we enjoyed more rights and freedoms under the BNA act.

I was much more worried about Alberta leaving than Quebec. Still am.

As a disgruntled morOntario tax slave I wish we’d push some of those referendum questions.

And I empathize with the Alberta voters who wanted to GTH out of this socialist morass, considering the decades of federal libscum abuse you’ve endured.

I understand why you wish to leave. And I’m also glad you’re here for the time being. You are an important part of this country and we are stronger with you than without you, irrespective of the federal libtrash party that treats you like an endless debit card. I’ll have more optimism for the future if we can vote out Carnage and his federal Rëtard party. But I’m not holding my breath.

    1. I think of it as an expensive exercise of futility.
Always 80 20 in this benighted country.
Also, with each such ‘democratic’ exercise, the 20 are better known.

      1. You think of this as an expensive exercise in futility? Wow, I’d hate to see you at a square dance. Some of find the exercise healthy. Really gets the elbows up, one might almost say. Some of us even find the futility noble. Though I admit, we are kind of silly.

    2. Alberta has:
      200,000 Muslims
      300,00 South Asians
      200,000 Chinese
      200,000 Filipinos
      170,000 Black Albertans
      and on and on

If you conjure up an Alberta ranchers, oil folks, farmers etc – you live in 1970 – it’s gone and Trudeau and Carney love it that way. They want a giant dependent voting bloc and they have it

      1. If fear you are correct. And let’s not forget that there are a lot of lazy useless white people and indians in addition to all those ‘others’ you listed.

My exit plan is a Panamanian Pensionado Visa.

  2. The urban incurious grazers dominate the votes and will vote against allowing an actual vote on independence. Smith, cozying up to the Carney is proof that she knows her electorate and their ovine nature. The vote for a vote will not exceed 30%. If the Spawn of Satan were still in office, the vote might have gone differently but the Carney’s trade war with Trump has energized the “war is the health of the state” pathology. The independence sentiment will not die but it won’t arise for a few years as Carney’s “economy” is realized.

  3. Watching the news, I heard 45 million ballots were printed. Since there are 40 million Canadians in the whole country… Anybody here think there will be massive fraud, or the elections will be pretty much honest?

    1. Pappy

I voted today and filled in 10 ballots.
There was a separate ballot for each of the 10 questions.

        1. Nope, smart setup. Each ballot is a different colour, and the counting boxes are the same shade for a quick visible check. Which was good because I dropped a couple and had the last ones out of out of order, only noticing when there was a big difference in shade.

          1. At my polling place the poll clerk asked to see the question number on the outside of the ballot before I was allowed to put it in each ballot box.

So different coloured ballots, each with the number of the question printed on the outside.

I found the whole voting process simple and well managed at my polling place.

        2. Anybody who is stupid enough to be baffled shouldn’t even be voting….they shouldn’t even be out on their own on the street.

  4. L – The Shaun Newman podcast is streaming live with new guest commentators rotating every half hour, which have included many notable and leading Albertans e.i. Tamara Lich, Eva Chipiuk, Leighton Grey, Mitch Sylvester, Jeff Rath, … too many to list. The show has guests booked until 10 am and drop-ins after that.

Rumble does not interrupt live podcasts:

  5. Flipping the channels and I wind up on Hanomansing who was interviewing a couple of fags from Alberta on their thoughts about the referendum. Then I switched to Family Feud.

  6. Wow. An 80-20 FAIL prediction? In the freest thinking Province in Canada. Yikes. I see a French future for all of Canada. Trump knew what he was doing by distancing our economic future from yours.

        1. I actually used that argument with some co-workers. “If you vote NO then if Hindi reaches 35% of the population it still can’t be an official language. Plan ahead, vote yes.”

      1. Joe – they had voting instructions in 9 languages where I voted. French was not one of them. I was gobsmacked.

    1. Allow me to clarify, by French Future … I mean various brown people burning and looting shit. Yeah, they’ll probably be speaking Punjibberish and this stuff … šxʷməθkʷəy̓əmasəm Street

      1. That’s Marx Carnage’s view of our future regardless of this vote. It’s not like our future has any bearing on his, 90%+ of his investments are in the US so tanking Canada and the Canadian economy might actually be a gain for him. Don’t try to tell the ankles-up crew that, they won’t believe it.

  7. I have no idea of which way this will go, only that I think it’s going to be very difficult to re-seal this Pandora’s box and forget it happened. I expect an official separatist party to rise from the ashes if this fails, which may split the right supporters and give rise to another round of NDP governance here… and I doubt the polling which has taken place so far in the campaign as being tainted by whichever interest group was paying for it.
The ads from those who are pro-Canada, I think they’re mostly bullshit, I expect whatever pipeline deal the AB Gov’t has signed with Canada to be put off forever.

Looking at the maps touting support to stay in Canada, the maps are pro-Canada in Calgary-Edmonton, but solid support in the rural areas, and Premier Smith has somehow managed to alienate both sides of the debate. I like much (NOT all) of what she says and does, but tip-toeing around this issue is is an own goal. She may resign if the separation side wins anyways as it’s officially not her position.

Conservative Senator Pamala Wallen resigned today, and I have no idea why, if it’s “something” related to today’s referendum here or not, she had 2 years to go until she must retire at 75 years.

64 minutes of open polls to go, then whoever is in the lineup… then the actual count.

    1. The feds will feed a steady supply of non-culturally-Canadians into Alberta to dilute the vote. I can’t see how someone who is not in viewpoint centrally planned fascist or communist could vote “no” to most of those questions.

    2. There was some pollster on one of the Canadian news channels and while there seems to be a myopic view only on Question 10, the polling this guy polled only in Calgary and Edmonton and the results showed that in most cases (and remember that is only is Calgary and Edmonton) the “yes” vote on most of the other nine questions was around 60%. Now add in the rural vote and that should be even higher.

      1. I’m surprised and happy to hear that. incrementalism works for us separatists in the long run.

  8. be mindful of the rule of thumb, in politics anything can happen.
dief the chief won a hug majority. it was one of my most early recollections, tho not strong and clear.
the biggest in cdn pol. history. and BLEW IT by becoming known as indecisive.
yo, JD, be mindful of the OPTICS.
l dont have a strong enough hunch to make a guess, and l differentiate between what l expect and what l want

  9. Elections Alberta has done a wonderful job.
Of convincing the voter that the process is biased.
Convincing the skeptical that these minions cannot perform their duties …Ethics? whats them?

The incredible idiocy of arguing that “Forever Canada” as run by Tommy Le Commy gets a pass on the referendum rules.
Limitless money and exempt all rules..

The insanity of claiming “Pro Independence” people are not qualified to be scrutineers.
“Rules for thee, but none for me…We are an independent unbiased bureaucracy”.

And I remain unconvinced of the integrityof them “Mail in ballots”
    And today,..late starts,late results..
Why do I feel we are being set up for election results as amazing as those seen for Sleepy Joe.
You know the kind..losing all night, then getting massive sole candidate “votes” after 3am.

I remain convinced that Alberta is going to piss on Ottawa’s boots
With a 60-70% true vote for change.
The polls are always wrong when speculating on what civilized people will do,as decent people do not talk to “Pollsters”.
And Team Canada as personified by the likes of Dear Leader Marx carnage and the dynamic duo of wretched Notley and Fat Stalin…what a winning team.
The turn out should set a record..
If fully counted the “Message” wins.

    1. John, you always state things well. But your overestimation of the courage of Canadians, any Canadians is astounding. The most wretched cowards ever conceived.

    2. Here here, John. Well said.

“And I remain unconvinced of the integrity of them “Mail in ballots”

Yes. I fear the cheat is in the mail. No mail in ballots should have been allowed.
For the few that truly couldn’t have appeared and cast their votes in person, the integrity of the referendum is more important than those few.

      1. The mail in process was fine. You were required to include copies of specific types of identification or they would be tossed.

    3. The vote will go the same way the Covid shot acceptance went. The 80% that took the Covid kill shot will vote to stay in this shit-hole Canada. Stalin would call those who vote to stay ‘useful idiots’. Remember you can’t fix stupid.

  10. As a former Albertan and current Lost Coaster, will I be able to apply for citizenship…?
    Cheers!!

  11. ‘mail in’
EVEN IF the ballots are all counted,
EVEN IF the voter marked only ONE ballot per entitlement
    EVEN IF etc etc.
it dont pass the ‘smell test’ with me.
    where is the polling booth?
it CANNOT POSSIBLY be known the ONLY person who ever knows who got the vote is the one ENTITLED to vote.
nope. ol’ aunt Bea got some ‘help’ because of her eyesight.
multiply that by roughly even 5% of the ballots and voila!! THEY are the swing vote.
    in a corrupt election process.

  12. Funny how Alberta never received any of the brown bags of cash like Queerbec got. Just worthless “peace in our time” MOA’s by our multiple passport holding PM. Come to think of it, if Queerbec would have got their 50.1%, odds are today wouldn’t be necessary.

  13. The Liberals will give it to us in the backside extra hard. Our hope is for Quebec to hit the road.

  14. All the talk of a rigged vote is bogus.

Alberta: Govern us harder mommy, baaaaaa

Even the French have more guts.

    1. All we can realistically do is pray that the inevitable economic crash of Canada happens quickly and brutally.

*Nothing else* will get through to them. Nothing. Their kids will have to go hungry before they finally catch on.

      1. Bah…socialist retards love their great struggles and arduous marches. Elbows up and all that bollocks…

        1. aaaaaaaaaaaaaand dont fergit, in TRUE socialist tradition, the leadershit STILL is endowed with
immense privilege. (that’s where the difference lays, who ‘owns’ those scare resources? the individual or the state. well, once THAT is established who has EXCLUSIVE ACCESS and use of those scarce resources?
          the elites.
did brezhnev ‘own’ the dachau where he hived off to ‘get away from things’? no
does the Donald own mar-a-lago? yes.
          see?

  15. Perhaps fragmenting the separatist campaign into four or five different poorly publicized (among the general population) organizations, each headed by a leader of varying crankiness, was not a winning strategy.

Future NDP Premier Naheed Henshi must be rubbing his hands in glee as mad separators prepare to destroy the United Conservative Party.

    1. There is no winning strategy. Canadians are subjects, it is in their DNA. They need their sovereign.

  16. Been saying it for years. Alberta suffers from urbanitis just like every other province.

    1. Assuming the vote was fair, then I believe you are correct. My fear about the final results started when I heard that many Boomers were going out to vote early. If they came from any semblance of an urban area, then it’s fairly certain that they belonged to the Elbows Up cult.

In summary, we just witnessed well off Boomers voting for continued decline, without any care for Canadians younger than them.

      1. Carney also said this was great for Canada. Of course it is, means the taps of money don’t shut off. Boomers, wrecked the ’80s, and are now wrecking the future generations of the entire country. Maybe it is time to leave.

  17. The verdict is in. The vast majority of Canadians are socialist weakling nanny-state cucks who deserve nothing. My country of birth and the country I grew up in is a worthless POS. The USA needs to conquer Canada with force, economic or otherwise, and strip all Canadians of any independent national status they think they have. You have served the retarded globalist King well as his loyal peasant serfs and I hope you enjoy the commie gruel you will now be fed. Good Luck.

  18. Can’t imagine that it is any real surprise.
    It is Canada after all.
Canadian French ancestry is most likely verboten to factually recite.
The United Empire Loyalists crawled here all the way from Bawston.

    And another thing.
Where would you ever find factual information in Canada about Canada?
Not from Government, Media or Educational Institution.
Which is why Baby Boomers being the bad guy is just baloney of the first order.
Young and stupid reigns in this country.
Before you get to all the Liberal Owned/Operated Special Interest Groups.
    It’s a damn long list.
Baby Boomers head the Other Liberal List.
    The Payees.
    And they know it.
    Lies and Liars.

  19. I was moving stuff into my storage space and ran into an older boomer storing his sports car for the winter. We got to talking and apparently we’re both looking at relocating out of Canada to Mexico, and for the same reason. This is a wealthy bedroom community, the heart of Elbozo territory. The normies are noticing.

    1. You are probably as safe in that narco state as in this one DR. We are still asserting ourselves as producers and traffickers, with the very competent assistance from china, of course

  20. Heh,well I sure got that wrong.
    Damn it Peter.
I wish you were not right.
Should I have any pity for Alberta when Little Lord Carney gives us what we voted for?
I guess we are just too fat and comfortable to recognize our situation.

On the glass half full side,25% of Albertans recognize our enemy.
And having 1 in 4 actually seeing the situation is a major step toward fixing the problem..
And these numbers will grow, for Ottawa will never deal in good faith with Western Canada, they simply can’t.
    It is in their DNA.
The Confederated Kleptocracy of Can Ahh Duh,will ignore this warning from Albertan’s and will impose an export tax on Energy, hydrocarbon based energy.
And most Albertan’s will act surprised..
$10 for a US gallon of diesel, yet the Liberal Voter cannot figure out why everything costs more..

we may as well start agreeing with the TDS afflicted..”Yes it is all Bad Orange Man’s fault..That Evil Donald Trump and his time machine..yeah,its his fault Can Ahh Duh is collapsing..Bankrupt and systemically corrupt.

  21. Had the same discussion with an old boss of mine that we always have after a socialist election win: “Is it better to keep voting for the lesser of two evils and drag out the inevitable or just get it over with and go full NDP/Lib and crash the welfare state sooner than later?”

Alberta is no longer any sort of last bastion of capitalism (if it ever was); it has been infiltrated by Liberal locusts and welfare tourists and their ideology of mediocrity and entitlement.

    Enjoy the decline my friends.
