Give us all your data

What could go wrong with giving a big government agency your internet search records, your point of sale records from your business, your health records.
Stats Canada wants to have access, backed up the law and threat of jail time, to all your data.

  1. Any moment now the Conservatives are going to hold a press conference and denounce this. Right?

  2. I’m sort of surprised that they went public with this. I always assumed that they were already logging everything.

  3. The more I see in the Liberal government here in Canada and the Democrats in America the more I am reminded of the rise of the Third Reich.

  4. In other words a gun registry, among other things via the back door. Then again being the cynic that I am, maybe I’m reading too much into this.

  5. This is just one step in the process. The big change will begin when our governments eliminate “cash.” With that done, the next step will be requirements for data retention of all economic transactions. And with that the government will own us.
With that power, our rulers will be able to know every penny we spend, what it purchased, who received it, and when. At the push of a button (so-to-speak) that information can be almost instantly in their hands. (Why do you think a little thing like warrants and due process will stop them?)
Even better will be their ability to free us from filing tax returns. Since the IRS will be able to know all our financial details, their computer programs will be able to instantly calculate what we owe in taxes, then simply suck it from our financial accounts. What could possibly go wrong?

  6. Change its name to the “Statistical Rights Commission”. Just another abusive bureaucracy: the right to abuse citizens in the name policy based evidence. Good time to read, “How to Lie with Statistics”.

  7. The government wants to spend a 100 grand a year keeping me in jail for not turning over my data? Fine! Have at ‘er! I need a rest.

  8. C’mon folks, remember governments “manage economies.” Why deny managers all economic information? While we’re at it, since we have all their information, let’s seize their assets for the good of the middle class. The Unpatriotics who object to having lifetimes of work made worthless can be redirected and re-educated at our new patriotic reorientation to statist automaton mode rest camps, given their fatiguing racism and incorrect intellect.
Instead of the individual as the primary focus in society – along with their family, community and the spontaneous order of civil society – everybody will own everybody, delegated of course to the wisest of us who understand how to spend everybody’s money for themselves, I mean “everybody.”
Got it, comrade? So what’s the big deal, unless you are bigoted against authoritarian despots dictating their enlightened totalitarianism? Look at how well big government has worked throughout the world, from Greece to Venezuela, now to a possible Obama 3rd term, and a $30trillion debt.

  9. Let’s add to this “turn over your data” demand, the other soon to be realized dream of social control, “pay by the mile” road tax. Featuring a little box in your car that reports… well, everything. Including how many passengers there are.
Already existing tech includes license plate readers and cell-phone tracking, these are pretty thorough.
The Stats Can land grab is particularly chilling, because it tells you just how big a woody these government cubicle dwellers have over private information. Their holy grail is credit card data and ISP data. With those two things they can know to a very fine degree all economic activity in the country.
They will then of course use that data to punish some activities and reward others. The notion of a sliding scale of sales tax occurs. Buy from an approved company, pay tax Level 1. Buy elsewhere, pay tax Level 2. Think sin taxes, where the sins go beyond the usual booze and smokes. They can punish deviations from the approved food triangle, for instance. Fatty, sugary foods are taxed, other ‘approved’ foods are not.
Scared yet? Now, just imagine what they’re going to do with your electronic medical records.
Elections, as they say, have consequences.

  10. The principal beneficiary of this info is the Liberal party, of course. Statscan also knows people lie like hell on voluntary surveys…

  11. I did post a reference to this yesterday as there was an article in the National Post. This is sinister, sinister. Does anyone remember the article about the ton of data that the UN wants from countries. Canada is putting in place the infrastructure for conforming to a UN-run technocracy. Ya, I know, “conspiracy” but it is happening. Agenda 2030 is not imaginary. There is a plan in place (UN is instrumental) for a governing technocracy. This is how they operate. The EU is a prime example. You are told what to do by bureaucrats and voters themselves have little say.
Why is there not a public outcry on this? I saw it in the National Post, but am wondering if the Globe has picked up on this. Trudeau is the UN’s own boy. Much of what is happening in Canada is being directed by the UN/globalists and Agenda 2030 supporters. Harper’s reason for getting rid of the mandatory long form was a good one. The government should not have the power to force you to answer personal questions!! Everyone is pretty casual about this when they are thinking about the traditional long-form census, but wait until the questions are doubled and tripled in number and become far more intrusive. That’s ahead!

  12. So … I guess all the Provinces … can now be referred to as Soviet Satellite states that have been overrun by the boi Trudeau ? Under the boot heel of his centralized authority. Goodbye Canada. You are becoming the EXACT thing that all the American leftists yearn to escape to.

  13. The Liberals don’t need to worry about Trump, their lad Trudeau has better hair, that’s where politics has sunk to.

  14. They are asking for private information that is none of their business.
Its enough to justify a civil war if the government grants them this intrusive power.

  15. “Its enough to justify a civil war” It is, but I don’t think Liberals care a lot about personal freedom. I am not sure what they do care about. I would say “social justice”, but I am pretty sure there is little agreement on what that means. Basically, the Liberals have no values, but there seems to be a mind set in this country that supports them come H or high water. Where is the outcry about the F-35? There is none! Liberals lie and deceive, pursue their own self-interest, and are quickly selling our country out to the globalists — Canadians are too stupid to get it.

  16. I can’t help but think that this news, the F35 contract news, the Hunter Tootoo story are all coming out at a time that they know the Canadian media will be distracted and gushing over Hillary Clinton. Because that’s the way they roll.

  17. And anyone who gets their news from Drudge or Breitbart will be sent to a re-education camp.

  18. What will it take?
Perhaps something like Canadians not answering “I’m sorry?” to every question.
Our ‘peace-love-dove’ education system has bred a generation of apologist ‘toleraters’ with no backbone to stand up to anything, except maybe having their cell-phones taken away or internet service interrupted.

  19. About now someone will chime in with “Unless you have something to hide you have nothing to worry about.”

  20. 1984 is getting closer and closer. The next step will be to rename Stats Canada, the Ministry of Truth. Why bother to collect all this data because future Liberal/Socialist dictatoriships will simply inform Stats Can as to the results they want them to report.
The Zombie Apocolypse isn’t looking like such a bad alternative.

  21. Still Have not filled out my long form censes….. had someone show up to my house to see if they could help me….. told them I would charge them with trespassing if they didn’t leave immediately. I told them I didn’t like people showing up at my door threatening me with jail for not giving them information that was none of their damn business.

  22. Grey lady..You took a silly way by admitting your intention to not complete the Census…too easy for them to collect a fine.
The smart way is to always say Yes Sir will get right on it… next week, unable to devote the time right now…Then trash it….
They don’t have an Action if it is lost in the Mail.. If enough folks just ignored them without falling on their sword…They would go away

  23. The smart way is to always say Yes Sir will get right on it… next week, unable to devote the time right now…Then trash it….
Correct. ..or fill out the form creatively by inventing a name and telephone number, along with other fictitious information, and mail it in.
There’s nothing to be gained by attracting negative attention; they might just decide to use you as an example to others.
The govt doesn’t need to know who I am, where I live, or what I do. Be polite and creative and they’ll think you’re giving the correct info.

  24. Many years ago, Grey Lady, I was one of those people turning up on your doorstep telling you to fill it in or else. Opposition to the long form census was quite widespread and across the political board. It was a lie the government made when it said people wanted it.

  25. What more bureaucrats self annoiting themselves as Gods?.
I treat the parasites with the same respect they show us.
The proper answers to their intrusive inquiries, require a little creative thinking.
    Sex? Maybe.
    Race? Loser/Other/Metis(Self identifying as).
    Occupation? Slave to State.
Education? 30 plus years of constant theft, propaganda and lies from “my government”.
They have shown us the way they “speak the truth”.
    Endless blather and spin.
The lying never stops at Census Canada..
We promise complete confidentiality, of all information you provide..We will fine and imprison you if you lie to us…
Only in government can you verify the truthiness of a citizens responses without breeching the promised confidentiality.
We are not far from financially prefering jail to paying taxes.
And the continuous onslaught from these parasites will only increase the aggravation.
Forget small business, employer status is now a crime, punishable by $500,000 and/or 1 year in jail.
Compliance demands more time from you than billable hours.
I wonder what the new unit of trade is going to be?
The bureaus drool over the dream of a cashless society.
No problem, trade units will be known as the nondollar.

  26. Jean … excellent answer !
“Be polite and creative and they’ll think you’re giving the correct info.”
This is the EXACT same way I got thru University with top grades ! And the leftist professors thought they had created a wonderful new disciple. They did JUST the opposite.

  27. I am willing to comply. Dear Statscan – I had a Japanese beef teriyaki lunch box at lunch today. They should set up a twitter account so everyone of us can let them know them know important sh1t like this.
Dear Statscan I’m thinking about buying new shoes. Dear Statscan I had a coffee this morning. Dear Statscan I texted my son this morning.

  28. I wonder who will be the first person to die trying to enforce this communist dictate?

  29. The law says that you have to answer the questions. Unless you’re under oath, you can give them the answer you ”believe to be right.”
    Example.
Ques: ”How many Television sets do you own.
Answer: 14 (I misread the question, I thought they meant TV trays.)
