A team of researchers, led by Prof. Mahesh M. Bandi of the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) wanted to explore some of these scientific problems involved in the fluctuations of renewable energy and how to better predict energy outputs. The team recently published their results in the New Journal of Physics.
“A fluctuating power source threatens the even distribution of power in the electrical grid,” Bandi said. “That makes it difficult to balance the fluctuating power output with the fluctuating consumer demand.”

Imagine a world in which politicians rewrite cancer treatment protocols. This is what they’re doing to electrical generation.

  1. Duh. The reality, not an educated inquiry, the reality of oh, 10 years worth of German practical experience in National grid load balancing. Then again, when Okinawans start teaching us in the west, common sense, well……

  2. Fluctuating power is not good? Well duh. A 6 year old kid with a race car set could have told him that! I wonder how much grant money,from the taxpayer,he stole for this “study”.

    This has been known from the beginning but has, of course, become more pronounced as more and more solar panels and windmills come on line. It’s rarely talked about however because this would not support the agenda.
    Recently several large grants have been made (I can’t find the article any more) to develop computer code for use by power distributors to keep the load level. That’s really what this article is about as well. This code will be quite sophisticated as the problem will only get worse. Not to worry however. Soon the AI will control your house and car through the power that keeps them running. Welcome to the world of the AI …. your new master.
    New nuclear power plants would make all of this unnecessary but then this is really about control and not about electricity.

  4. Climate Change aka Global Warming and all the insanity associated with it is one major factor a guy like Trump is rising.
    Number one on my wish list is that Trump exposes the fraud so that it implodes and goes away once and for all. If he does not and the lie carries on, he will be part of the continuing corruption in Washington and not much better than what we have now.
    Remember that the global warming crusade was pretty much launched and financed by the USA with Al Gore as it’s high priest. This of course was from Saudi/OPEC marching orders. General Electric and other Corporations followed with solar panels and windmills and are now attached to it.
    For me, the ultimate proof that Trump is the real deal is for him to kill this lie. Period.

    It is clear, they are trying to make something work that simply doesn’t work because it’s a flawed theory and stupid design. Windmills were wonderful for grinding and milling flour, (That is why the word ‘mill’ is in the name.) but they are not a reliable energy source and will never be until socialists can control the wind and it appears they will try that for a long time before giving up and building bigger ones … that ‘should’ work better … or something.
    This is called putting lipstick on a pig.

    what a fantastic way to set the thing up for invasive malicious virus(es). shucks, we don’t even need kim jjong-un’s EMP missile.

  10. A few years ago a comprehensive report came out that studied a similar problem: at what percentage of power supply does wind power begin to destabilize the grid system. Its conclusion, if I remember correctly, is that wind energy creates almost no problems at 10% or less. At 20% the grid becomes significantly less stable and at above 30% the grid control/operators struggle to keep the grid functioning. Which is why every MW must be backed up by natural gas or a neighbor with reliable, excess power. Both of these solutions -paying for both natgas and wind or importing expensive power- unnecessarily increases costs for consumers. With natgas prices being at record lows it makes no sense at all. Build natgas plants and skip wind.
    The ultimately irony is that the CO2 produced from mining, manufacturing, concrete and construction of wind farms is greater than the CO2 reduced by using wind. Google engineers attempted to find a way to make existing alternative power work but:

    If you’re a lukewarmer or a rational environmentalist then you’ll probably like the article. They are dedicated to R&D as a solution. The biggest problem with government pouring money into research is that politicians are either already corrupt or easily corruptible. As it is now, Solyndra (US) and Bombardier (Can) are the more likely scenarios not a successful “moonshot”.

  12. I think energy consumers in places like Ontario will disagree. Once the politicians screw up an industry, it pretty much stays screwed. They’ve committed to at least a couple of decades of sharply increasing electricity rates due the Green Energy Act and cap and trade. Once they hit rock bottom – high cost of living leading to fewer taxpayers as young people and young families leave, pension liabilities and debt repayment crowding out other public services, higher taxes on remaiing businesses and residents [repeat viscous cycle until economic collapse] – then they might rediscover the social benefits of reliable, affordable energy.
    I think provinces and states that hang onto their conventional energy supplies as long as possible and understand how unfair it is to increase their citizen’s costs to simply heat their homes and go to work will be way ahead economically. There may be an energy source other than nuclear that will replace fossil fuels but it does not currently exist so any carbon pricing is just an excuse to tax essential products and transfer the wealth to politicians and their cronies.

  13. It is amazing how things become news when “experts” finally parrot what the boots on the ground have known forever but don’t command the attention the experts are able to access.
    In this case, I have had folks who operate the grid at SaskPower tell me this since the very first wind project at Gull Lake was put into service years ago and the direction to them was to use wind when it was available and throttle down the steam generators.
    I expect the next finding the experts will happen upon will be how raising and lowering the output of the conventional generators shortens the lifespan of the equipment and multiplies maintenance costs which are passed on to the customers. It will be a huge revelation when someone finally discovers this….sarcasm is intentional.

  14. With all the angst of balancing fluctuations (unstable) power sources.. The study suggests that they were surprised that ERROR signals have similarities between separated (different) systems…
    HELLO! What do control systems that predict 50 Cycle error & correction have in common. Themselves!
    Like Climate Models, the artifacts are found in flawed algorithms.

  15. I forsee a “eco-friendly” future for our useless parasites.
    All who wasted our money on wind,solar and pixies dust power will pay restitution.
    Running on human hamster wheels until they generate sufficient kWh to pay off the damages they caused.
    Now I know this will mean entire generations will fall into slavery, but so what.
    These “helpers” think nothing of mortgaging my grandchildren’s earnings to finance their current welfare schemes.
    Good enough for government says it all.
    Power utilities must by law provide their product at 60 cycles per second, any more than 5% deviation brings fines and forces compensation payments to customers.
    Then government legislates that these same companies MUST buy the wildly erratic power from wind and solar.;
    Small wonder power companies show such cynicism toward renewable schemes.
