Some shaky details here.
Update: More details via Saskatoon Star Phoenix.
#BREAKING: 5 dead, 2 critically injured in northern Saskatchewan school shooting, PM Justin Trudeau says
— CTV News (@CTVNews) January 22, 2016
Update 2 (Kate): RCMP have announced 4 dead, undisclosed number of injured. I’ve more information on the nature of the shooting — that siblings were among the victims, along with another victim’s identity (in addition to the one already released), but am withholding, for reasons that should be self-evident from the “just not ready” tweet above.
Update 3: I now have all(?) the names of those killed. They (may) include three siblings, along with Marie Janvier, who’s name has been released. Surfing through the Facebook pages of “friends and family” in Laloche is an adventure in gang culture.
Case in point.

Star Phoenix is now filling in some blanks.

so, what, the crips got real estate that far north?
Marshall McLuhan said it first: ‘global village’.
he predicted the shrinking of ‘distance’ ie the speed it took information to spread, long ago. like 50 +/- years.
I miss his eclectic style.
Dude, as much as I sorta wince at the way you worded this in the end I have to pretty much agree with it 🙁
no kidding. I mean, every time the obamasan interjected about the latest shooting, it had long already been reported.
what gives? this *is* a first.
perhaps we are being primed (no pun intended) for the day we HAVE NO traditional media sources.
“… PM Selfie now reports the news?”
Think about it. He should be reading the news on TV. It’s something he’s actually qualified for.
this is why we need the gun registry (sarc)
Hmmm… Well thank god those four/five weren’t genocided by one of those culturally inappropriate residential schools.
I agree with all who find it creepy that PM Shiny Centaur is now reading the news. Weird!
News has to be approved by Dear Leader now? I guess he may as well be the one reporting it too.
“Time to take some meaningful steps to end the existing systems which merely perpetuate the violence”
I agree. All Trudeau has offered is to legalize marijuana.
What’s needed is a Circle, a Pow Wow, and a Sweet, that should fix everything.
No,the Long Gun registry was not forced on Reserves, even though their rate of gun violence is way worse than anywhere in Canada off -Rez.
The hypocrisy and idiocy of this policy was pointed out frequently by the NFA and various gun clubs, but it was a political decision made to placate FN Chiefs who knew they’d be in deep shit if they tried to enforce a LGR on Rez.
I don’t believe FN’s on Rez have to possess a PAL either.
A treaty card is all you need to buy a firearm, on or off the Rez.
I wonder if Trudeau called the family, that went so well last time.
Of course, as all the Liebs would say, Harper wouldn’t call, he was too evil.
It has been a number of years since I’ve been to La Loche but I formerly had occasion to be there for work on a semi-monthly basis. I witnessed the results of reformation of some individuals whom I dealt with. One was very forthcoming about why he changed his ways, a story about the Bruno Triangle (if you are familiar with La Loche, Bruno’s is a poolhall, across from the Northern Store where you can cash cheques, near the liquor store) explained as much as any social worker could about the malaise that resides in this town. The other just demonstrated his reformation with his actions. When the school bell rang for lunch he simply said ” Well, I’ve got to go take my daughter home for lunch. ”
I admire the wherewithal he demonstrated, as the first number of times I’d encountered him he was sporting fighting wounds and an obvious negative attitude, with no mention of any concern for anyone or anything else, besides the cash he was earning for the work he performed. I truly hope he is still on the straight and narrow for the sake of his daughter, who would be a young adult now. The desperate circumstances in many of these remote communities are readily apparent to anyone who cares to see them (La Loche is remote but not inaccessible by highway, unlike many settlements) but I don’t have any real, good solutions to alleviate basic problems that appear all too regularly. The observation about gang culture was very poignant as I had seen the result of an obvious “Return of the prodigal son” as he was driving down main street in his flashy car with young kids rushing to hear stories of the far off Saskatoon and all that could be theirs……
Firstly my condolences to the families and people involved in this tragedy. Secondly to the people looking for an answer to stop this type of violence. The immediate call that will be forthcoming from the government for more gun control is not the answer. Perhaps, and I say this reservedly, the answer is in the inability of the federal government to fully integrate the First Nations people. You cannot expose a segment of society to the wider world through TV and radio, and expect them to accept the fact that their lifestyle, which the federal government enforces, exempts them from attaining the luxuries that they have been exposed to. As we have seen of late the past government tried to bring the First Nations into a semblance of Western culture but the present government has stepped back from that endeavor. When you remove responsibility you begin a descent into a dark hole. We have generations of First Nations that have been conditioned to a lifestyle of government benevolence, we have families of second and third generations of immigrants, that are conditioned to government handouts. These unfortunates have been sold the lie by the mainly liberal and socialist governments that they have the right to expect what they are shown on TV as the Western lifestyle without any personal effort or input. Therein lies the problem, exasperated by the fact that those who call attention to this are called racists. Unfortunately this type of tragedy is going to be repeated and increase ten-fold until we all accept responsibility for the nightmare that, through willful blindness, indifference and fear we have allowed to flourish.
Condolences, and like Metis girl said drugs and sniffing are a bigger issue.
But wow the names, Janier, Grandbois, etc – didn’t realize how related the folks in that town were to Cold Lake
I guess Canada is a back-water, 3rd world country because Obama says that America is the only “Advanced nation” where these shootings occur.
Sorry for your loss.
Mourn and honor your dead,
permit your teachers to conceal carry.
“How long before Jr Pet Selfie uses this to grab hunting rifles again?”
You nailed it. But Commissioners Paulson’s restrictions wouldn’t apply to reserves of course, where hunting would have to be allowed because of tradition….
A student who was just returning from lunch when shots were fired at the school said his friends ran past him urging him to get out.
“Run, bro, run!” Noel Desjarlais-Thomas, 16, recalled his friends saying to him as they fled the Dene building of La Loche Community School.
SO why do kids in Northern Saskatchewan speak like Chicago blacks?
I turned the radio off to avoid his gluttony of emoting.
But the long gun registry never applied to injuns. They were exempt because it was a traditional implement.
Last time I watched CBC was when they went on strike a few years back.
Thanks Metis Girl for summing it up so succinctly.
There is the same conjunction of progressive enforced apartheidt in Australia, with the same problems. Government agencies and dogooders profiting from the captivity of their wards and gasoline sniffing by kids.
When a socialist tells you the government will look after us better than we can look after ourselves, just take a good look at the Canadian Indian. They have been totally looked after by the government.
Wadda ya think?
End Indian Apartheid NOW! Free the Indians so they too can pursue a real life.
As far as I’m aware a gun registry would not/could not be enforced on Indian Reserves. We’ll see if this tragedy is used for political reasons.
Also, I happen to believe the fact we still have Indians living and being supported on reservations to be the real tragedy. Why? Because its 2016!
*
Ya a traditional implement the indians pioneered … the first ones were made out of birch bark.
*
Who cares, whitey has been told to but out of Indian business for decades. Let that fat Perry Bellguarde fix his own mess.
Notice the MSM isn’t calling for gun control in LaLoche as it is Indian country and that would be racism.
Quality MSM reporting – lotsa Justin, zero mention (and I mean absolutely zero mention) of First Nations or Reserve.
T (fils) becomes the country’s media flack and gets it (the number of dead) wrong. I thought his handlers had a better grip on him.
Now that we are giving people the right to do anything because it’s societies fault, expect
more of this. Extra free money and inquires will only add to the problem.
PM Selfie is morphing into PM TV, as the official disseminator of Liberal platitudes,
propaganda and follies.
Didn’t one of the victims relatives hang up on Trudeau when he was blathering his ‘condolences’ over the phone?
Well said sir.
I would also like to offer my condolences to the family and people in that community.
The sad lifestyle in most of those communities is so unnecessary and could be changed, but vested interests, red and white, like it the way it is.

and if it’s too much trouble to find someone to kill… you can just off yourself…
“The area, which includes La Loche, Buffalo Narrows, Ile a la Crosse and other communities in the province’s northwest, averaged 43.4 suicide deaths per 100,000 people between 2008 and 2012. That’s more than triple the average annual provincial rate of 12.7…”
yeah, yeah, i know… let’s blame stephen harper.
thank goodness (under prime minister care bear) we’re no longer auditing into which black hole that $12,000,000,000 in federal money handed to aboriginal chiefs is disappearing.

“Since when is the Prime Minister the go-to person for breaking news?”
Politics has gone the way of television.
TV news anchors are notorious for having pretty faces and empty heads. Sound familiar?
A combination apparently irresistible to women voters, feminized men and the Media.
See Boy Wonder, NB’s Gallant etc. Wynne being the obvious empty-headed exception, but having the right sexuality. It appears the Media has an awful lot of hangups and preoccupation with sex.
Who gives a rats ass. This fetal alcohol, gang banging, First Naaaaaations scum should be locked up forever. Accept some responsibility first nations people, I’m tired of paying.
Several years ago I had a friend from South Africa visit me in Vancouver. He was here on a business trip. I took him for a drive up through Whistler and then through to Lillooet. We stopped for a beer and he saw some of our glorious first nations individuals drunk as skunks. I explained the situation here in Canada about reserves etc. He said amazed “you have Apartheid in Canada”
Now we know, again andd still, who is killing natives.
Answer?
N A T I V E S.
Because its the culture. For eons, before all of us evil palefaces came here.
Who needs an enquiry?
i guess their teaching of history is as dumbed down as ours.
The South African government took advice and visited canadian reserves when creating apartheid.
“Rockwood is the only guest that hasn’t put a political slant on this tragedy yet. EVERYTHING IS NOT POLITICS you small minded pigs.”
THIS, SDA, is a political blog. Politics is a blood sport.
If you think we should all be praying or genuflecting you’re in the wrong place.
“Now they will take away the guns using this as an excuse”
~Modern Metis Girl
They won’t take them away from the Indians or half-breeds.
Their access to them is guaranteed by Treaty and Ottawa even supplies them firearms and ammo.
It’s Whitie’s secret genocide agenda, don’cha know?/
“SO why do kids in Northern Saskatchewan speak like Chicago blacks?”
Because Indian and Metis kids have appropriated that culture.
I watched the Manitoba Metis music video awards on APTN a couple of years ago, expecting to see maybe some top notch Metis fiddlers.
I was absolutely shocked and dismayed, almost every music video was traditional Manitoba Metis “gangsta” rap! Seems like the FN kids like this crap, and have embraced it to the detriment of their own cultural traditions.
So, unrecognized by our diligent media, we have loser Native kids embracing the culture of even worse loser kids from American ghettos.
I cannot believe that there has been no blame placed on the Residential Schools!!! In fact they mostly seem to accept their Christian (Catholic) upbringings. Surely that is a good sign. With the pipelines being pooh-poohed, there is little chance for jobs or even pay-outs! Let us all pray that the reserve system is, for the most part, dismantled.
