Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

That video makes a pretty compelling argument that self driving vehicles make sense. I’ve used them in the mining industry and they’re a good way to get rid of lazy unionized bums.
If it were an autonomous vehicle it would have stopped before hitting anyone. It’s pretty clear to see near the end of the video when the guy pulls the end zone pylons from the gas pedal.
Watch an Airbus A350 go from over 100 mph to 0 mph in under 15 seconds

I was coming home via T.O. International from Newark with the family unit when the plane flew thru some chimney exhaust or whatever, lost lift and the right wing dropped 90 degrees.
the pilot immediately corrected. I then popped my head up, completely unfazed since the sudden incident was now over, looking around at the grimacing faces of the other passengers thinking, hmmm, I guess this is what it’s like to be on a plane when it crashes . . . . .
anyways, does the presence of autonomous google cars mean anyone can shove any unmanned prototype they choose onto the public streets? or does it require the great wealth of an organization like google and the accompanying political and legal clout to get authorities to give you a ‘pass’, regardless of regulations, just because they can?
I would ask the local lieberal MPP, but naturally they would refuse to so much as acknowledge the question.
Saw a few on these being tested in Palo Alto/Mountain View CA while we were visiting with family.
Sooooper creepy. There’s a big difference between self-driving tracked vehicles, like a monorail train for airport shuffling, etc and free roamin’.
Despite my concerns, I would rather share the road with some autonomous vehicles than 1/2 the ignorant a-holes driving in major cities. I recently moved to a rural/small city area and actually enjoy the hell out of driving again. A great handling car on open, unclogged streets/hwys, I still can’t get rid of the smile. 🙂
My insurance fell by 20%, fuel by about $0.12/ltr and stress levels by 75%. I guess those are further reasons for the smile.
My last 10 years driving in the Vancouver area sucked AAALLL the fun out of driving for me. People so selfish, unskilled and uncaring in their driving I can’t believe there is not 10 deaths per day. Signalling is now almost the exception, tailgating commonplace, distracted driving the norm, and angry, aggressive nobodies driving like bullies everywhere. I won’t waste another 2 paragraphs explaining how the police are incapable of controlling the problem, especially when they usually set a gawd-awful driving example for the rest of us. Seriously, follow almost any cop throughout the Van area and add up the infractions you witness.
My biggest concern with auto-drive is that many of the vehicles won’t be empty. Introduce the human element and Murphy’s Law will dictate hundreds of scenarios where people will still cause a vehicle to crash. I also have many questions about this technology in Canada’s climate. Temperatures in the -30 to -40 range, heavy fog, heavy rain, strong winds, deep slush or black ice(ABS systems are only great, not magical). Will they drive around a deep puddle or detect other smaller hazards like potholes, nails and glass? etc, etc? Whenever I have to brake hard, that action is ALWAYS tempered by a check of the rear-view mirror for tailgaters. Will a computer do that? Will these vehicles ultimately be programmed to endanger people by swerving around squirrels or instead mow down small ducks, dogs and cats with impunity? Ha, even with these concerns I realize that they would have to be safer than many humans on the road today.
Aahhh, nothing like a good rant to start the morning!
There is zero hope in hell I would ever set foot in a computer controlled vehicle. As has been shown on TV a few moths ago…even your 4GLTE Vehicle can be hacked. Now if I was a terrorist….hmm …???
Thanx but no thanx, I’ll stick with my 06 vehicle that has zero connectivity with anything but me.
But for the future there is always SkyNet …. it’s inevitable.
Self Driving Cars – WELCOME TO THE FUTURE – 2065 A.D.
Computer controlled vehicles will be mandatory within 50 years. Computers will improve to the point of AI (artificial intelligence) alleviating worries that unusual driving conditions will cause problems.
No one will own a vehicle. Garages will be converted to living space or storage. People transporters will be standardized. Likewise cargo transporters. Some will be combination cargo and people transporters. There will be no big automotive companies competing for your business. There will be fewer vehicles on the road because of this and because of the superior coordination between vehicles. This coordination will eliminate traffic jams and accidents and, along with fewer vehicles, make transportation times much faster. Speed limits will increase in certain areas too.
When one needs a ride, one calls for a vehicle using their pocket computer. The nearest one to you will come. In the cities, this will be a matter of minutes. Rural dwellers will have to wait some time. Payment is automatic. The vehicle takes you were you want to go, picking up riders with the same or similar destinations on the way. You path to your home dwelling is the same procedure.
I won’t be there to see it.
Bingo!
Hacked computer controlled vehicles will be a major source of weapons of mass destruction, especially so if the supply of suicide bombers run low.
Hacked, their ability to be used to assist terrorist attacks would be catastrophic.
Neither human intelligence, nor human character are perfect, but they exceed that of government and tyrants by a large measure.
Such is the premise of our system of self-government, of individual liberty and responsibility.
Regarding the above comments, I can understand that it’s normal for people to miss trust and resist technology. Every time a new technology is rolled out this happens. When seatbelts and then airbags were introduced there was a portion of the population going around claiming that they were dangerous, being somebody who has smashed myself up by hitting the dashboard of a car, well… You get the message. Before too long this feeling will go away and the new technology will just become normal. Self driving cars will be the largest positive advancement in the automotive industry since the beginning of the automotive industry. No question.
What gets me about the above comments are the people who believe the terrorists will hack self driving cars to turn them into weapons of mass destruction him. Don’t you know that there is no real terrorist threat when compared to the multitude of other things out there that want to kill you. How many Canadians have been killed by terrorism on domestics soil? And I’m talking about real terrorists, not schizophrenics or otherwise mentally ill people. Seems like none to me.
I’m more worried about getting T-boned in an intersection by a drunk driver, getting a fatal disease, getting murdered by one of the people that believe handguns are a way of life, getting mangled in some other sort of terrible accident, etc.
Of all the things that are out there to kill you, being blown up by terrorists is the least of your concern.
