  1. It is called ‘deemed disposition’. Same thing happens when you die. In both cases you cease to become a resident of canuckistan for tax purposes. It is something that needs to be planned for as people flee shitholistan.

  2. In the US, there is tax competitiveness between states.
Some states, like Texas and Florida, have no state income tax. That’s why people are fleeing high tax states like New York and California to move there.
In Canada, there is no such competitiveness.
If you make 300K in Canada, your marginal tax rate is around 50% no matter where you live. The government is your 50/50 partner.
And you wonder why you can’t find a doctor.

  3. Okay, Canada has an “exit tax”; the Americans go one better. They tax on BOTH citizenship and residency. So an American citizen is required to file a US tax return every year and – depending on his/her income, may well be required to pay taxes in both the country of residence and the US. Have known long-term Canadian residents who renounced their US citizenship because of this requirement. The US was – at one point – charging big bucks for anyone who wanted to renounce citizenship but lowered the fee following serious protests.
