  1. I’m going to remember this the next time my local school district is placing a new tax on the ballot to … “fund the arts” … that mean Republicans “cut” from their budgets.

In a related story, my local school district just won election of a new added property tax. Another $600/year … on top of the THREE other special taxes for the same school district we are already assessed. Yes, my school district collects FOUR separate ‘special assessments’ on our yearly property taxes.

I’ve never done this before, but residents aged 65 and older can file to be exempted from these assessments. I’ve never done this before … but this last assessment was the straw that broke the camel’s back. I’m no longer going to pay +$2,000.00/year to … fund the arts … of my local school district. And I feel really good about it.

  2. Years ago I mentored a young lady engineer from Manitoba. She mentioned she had over $15,000 in scholarships for one year (she was genuinely smart). As I got to know her better she confessed that she spent a single day looking up all the scholarships she could find and applied for each one. In most cases she was the only applicant so she won.

The woman who received $15,000 to roll in a lawn chair in Korea – did anyone else have a competing entry? Did she beat out the guy who wanted to make bird calls from a tree in Albania or the lady who wanted to wear a rug on her head in Bhutan?
