Given the historic ties of France to Syria, would it not make sense to settle the 25,000 refugees predominantly in French speaking areas of the country? Surely Syrians are more likely to speak French than English, and placing them in communities where they can at least communicate with others and begin the process of finding jobs, getting education, etc., would be best for all concerned. Quebec is also already home to the largest population of Syrian-Canadians (some 47% of the total, according to Wikipedia). Would it not be wise to settle refugees around this potential support network? Herding them into military bases seems foolish; if they’re going to be brought here, as the PM seems intent on doing, shouldn’t they be settled where they have the greatest chance of success? Is there a better place in Canada than Quebec, and to a lesser extent, New Brunswick?
