This is a losing argument. To all except those who have a special historical family link to the original cause, the actual truth when it comes to the Confederate Battle Flag, its meaning and what was in the hearts of the people who designed and flew it mean absolutely squat. What the modern culture has come to believe is all that matters now. Woodrow Wilson? Good grief. Does the average person care? Of course not. How do you get any satisfaction making points that don’t impress 90-99% of the population?
The truth of the swastika is that it was a positive, good-luck symbol. This extended across many cultures. I went to high-school with a guy whose family was from India. His grandfather had a collection of old Indian art…many of the pieces had the swastika featured prominently. Some of them were rather beautiful. They were kept in the attic. The actual meaning of the art and the intentions of the original artists (who did their work long before Hitler was born) didn’t matter. You just don’t display the swastika anymore because of what people have come to associate it with.
In cases like this, right or wrong, the truth doesn’t matter…it only matters what people believe. In general, the people believe the Confederate Flag represents pure evil. They might be wrong. But, they have also been conditioned to think that anyone who tries to point out the fact that they are wrong are also evil. It is a firewall you can’t break through unless the person wants to accept the idea of letting you through.
You want to win? The culture has to be changed. IMHO, the only way this can happen in a rightward direction is after a collapse of some sort. But, in any case, you have to change the culture and moral base on which assumptions are made. Until that is done, with all respect to Mr. Lilley, trying to score points with arguments like these are nothing more than moral masturbation exercises in front of people who already agree with him.

In the meantime the downward slide will continue until the bottom is reached and unfortunately, if history has any lessons, people will be hurt. The hurt ones will be those who do not go along with this creation of the new man (where have seen this before). I am getting old, but worry about my children and grandchildren as it is becoming quite obvious that they will stop at nothing to achieve their aims.

Yes, you are 100% correct. But, your (and my) penchant to be historically accurate with regards to intent and and facts puts you (and I) in the minority. And my point was that, in order to make that desire spread, there has to be more than a desire to satisfy the relatively isolated concept of respect for the truth. We have to understand that the majority don’t care. To effect real change, that is the most imposing obstacle.
Many of the same “Liberals” who want to ban the Confederate flag have no issues with the Communist Chinese or USSR flags that represent the butchery of millions.
One online commenter claimed that the Confederacy lost the war so should loose their flag by default. I wonder why then he would allow the flags of the Quebecois or the First Nations to fly over the Nation of Canada.
