10 senators to be referred to RCMP, ~ 30 more with questionable expenses. These ppl sat in judgment of Duffy/Wallin? http://t.co/vtOvMtYIYX

If I were appointed to the Senate, I’d happily pay my own expenses. JUST SAYING.

Ten Conservative Senators,I presume.
The first comment at the link is worth reading.
Please let them be all Liberal/NDP appointees.
Since the NDP has never formed a Canadian government, they were never in a position to appoint senators.
Sheesh!
Check this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_senators_in_the_41st_Parliament_of_Canada
Can someone explain to me why Mac Harb would be listed as Independent?
The RCMP needs Inspector Fenwick more then ever
And the audit cost $21 million, an order of magnitude more than the questionable Senate expenses themselves. Who watches the watchmen?
Ya got MY vote, Kate!
For whatever THAT’s worth.
sorry Andrew, I doubt very much that you would be any different than the rest of those at the trough. I suggest we make the senate an unpaid appointment that way after they are appointed they could go home and do what the rest of us do. they serve no function and have no power.
Full Definition of SELF-INTEREST
…….: one’s own interest or advantage ( IN LIFE..? )
(REMINDS ME OF WHEN I WAS A KID ON OUR FARM)……. PIGS AT THE TROUGH AT FEEDING TIME!
I think the Liberanos booted him from caucus, Pete, after he got caught.
If you want to truly test a man’s integrity then let him loose at the trough with a generous expense account.
As a young man I earned the privilege of a job with company car, expense account, company AmEx, etc and faced the temptation of submitting a “blank cheque” every month. I respected the trust shown in giving me these tools even though the company itself actually encouraged some cheating, ie: expensing a very nice dinner for the spouse(but record them as a client)every month because we spent so much time away from home. The reality is, there are ways to cheat on expenses that no audit could ever detect. Ha, I don’t claim to be Mr. Honesty himself, may have crossed the line myself if not for the strong fear of buggering up a really good thing.
If you take a cross-section of any part of society and you will find some amount of malfeasance.
So, over 40 past and present Senators are now being investigated for widely varying amounts of discrepancies on their expenses, including criminal ones. From both my experience with my fellow “professionals” and the general lack of personal integrity I witness in politics, that number is absolutely believable to me, would be higher if they could catch the truly clever ones too.
Since partisan loyalties cancel out any hope of “sober second thought” anyways, ABOLISH THE SENATE!!
My buddy worked in Parliament for years. What he said about MPs applies to Senators. “They are compromised without knowing it dozens of times within their first few months. When (if) they balk at something down the road because they see something ethically troubling, they are quickly reminded of these previous indiscretions – so they just fall in line.”
Non-story now. The Senate scam was all about Wallin and Duffy and how their past behavior was damaging Steven Harper. BTW why did the investigation cost over 20 million?
They are liberal!! Even if appointed by a conservative
The Auditor General spends like a drunken sailor on shore leave. I suspect the audit cost more than the expenses he was auditing. The guy, in my opinion must be a totally incompetent idiot. While the prosecution in the Duffy trial is clearly having difficulty determining what the rules were before proving that Duffy broke them. Apparently the auditor general had no problem determining guilt without defining the rules.
“If I was appointed to the Senate, I’d happily pay my own expenses. JUST SAYING.”
Kate – quit sucking up.
I volunteered for the Senate. Haven’t heard back from Harper yet.
An American friend of mine in Washington finds “l’affaire Duffy” amusing, particularly the amounts of money involved – a few hundred here, a few thousand there.
She claims Canadian senators are a disgrace to the title:
“No US senator would think of being caught with their hand in the public till for less than a few million. Why ruin a lucrative career over parking change?”
Mac Harb was a Liberal Senator, appointed by Chretien, he did his work as a Liberal Senator. He may have sat as an Independent before he resigned when things got too hot. His case has not yet been dealt with in the courts and the media have no interest in even mentioning him, he’s Liberal.
Trudeau has disowned all Liberal Senators so he will have nothing to answer for or about as more of the poop is brought to light.
Harper, on the other hand, will be blamed for anything his appointees did as if he had anything to do with the running of Senate affairs, which of course he did not.
With an election a few short months away, the desperate media and the elected Opposition parties will use anything they can to make Harper look bad. The barrel bottoms will be well scraped.
The tiny amount of money involved plus the non-existent rules is the reason I believe there really is no Senate scandal. Strictly cooked up by the press and not managed by the apparently politically ignorant Marjory LaBreton. The Senate Internal Economy Committee should have been smart enough to say not guilty and don’t let it happen again. I think Harper may have been trapped by his fools in the Senate. I emailed Harper 3 times as things progressed telling him that there was no upside to his court jesters in the senate investigating their own.
Yes, that’s true…but Trudeau didn’t have a problem naming NDP-leaning senators during his tenure as a hat-tip to his fellow travellers the NDP–during the time he essentially, destroyed Canada’s culture. Stop setting your “clock” to the late 60’s and ask yourself what culture identified Canada prior to WW2. There was a distinct Canadian culture from the Brits and Americans that emerged right after WW1 and was taking shape after WW2–it survived right up until the mid-70s. Today, if you ask a Canadian what values Canada holds he/she will say socialized healthcare and/or multi-culturalism–these didn’t exist prior to the late 60s/early 70s. These two “ideas” were introduced by the Liberals and strengthened under Trudeau and Broadbent.
