Free Perdue!

The left will not be pleased.

Purdue University has become the first public institution of higher education to adopt a free speech policy called the “Chicago principles,” condemning the suppression of views no matter how “offensive, unwise, immoral, or wrong-headed” they may be.
The board of trustees passed a measure endorsing those principles on Friday. Purdue President Mitch Daniels plans to address some of the same points in his remarks at the Indiana university’s commencement ceremony this weekend.

  1. As a socially left (more so libertarian) and economically centrist person, I say “bravo”.
Seeing as many on this site decry the usage of identity labels, might I suggest moving away from simplifications such as “the left” or “the right”? If you still insist on looking at world through intellectually lazy terms, nothing is stopping you from adding a few extra shades.

  2. “… I suggest moving away from simplifications such as “the left” or “the right”…”
Sure. How about “the wrong” and “the right” ?

  3. Whatever you do, don’t trigger Tim with that right wing “good and evil” mumbojumbo. We may scare him off to his Safe Space for good.

  4. I first saw “Perdue University” written on a chalk board in a classroom in the spring of 1970 just after the Kent State killings. Someone put it up because there was no reaction at Purdue. I was glad because I was writing my dissertation and didn’t need a shutdown.

  5. An academic study of whether the radical left can exist in an environment of freedom, reason, counterpoint and true diversity of opinion

  6. We are only damaging our kids by coddling them with only one side of any argument. They come out of these ‘so-called’ educational institutions completely ill-prepared for the real world. Aside from not being able to cobble a decent letter together they have zero ability to deal rationally with people who may have a different perspective or point of view. All they seem to know how to do anymore is yell louder over the other person and consider that a well-reasoned argument. Kudo’s to Perdue for actually bringing back what these institutions should been doing from the get-go.

  7. I bet Mesley and Mansbridge are just scramblin’ to interview Ottawa Pres. Alan Rock to see when he’s going to do the same thing.

  8. Can all the letists collage adminastrators and get other books other then Das Kapital and The Communists Manifesto

  9. Thanks for that, Gord. My immediate first reaction was “who is this guy?”. Allowed myself for a split second the fantasy he was a typical university socialist who had seen the light but seriously doubt I will ever actually witness one these “enlightenments”.
Sorry, can’t leave the left/right thing alone.
    Firstly. Tooner, nice one.
Secondly, when I hear the terms right and left used I usually mentally add the adjective “hardcore” because partisans are mainly the ones who rely on these terms, not those who wander anywhere near the centre. And, when it comes to hardcore partisans, these generalities are quite apt.

  10. Can he and his various subordinates and boards stick to this policy when the radicals and grevience start their protests and riots, and we all know they will.

  11. Occam, I doubt it. The left has never been tolerant of any opposition to its agenda and there is no reason to expect that tolerance will begin anytime soon, especially since at the moment they are in the drivers seat.
robw, short answer is no, protests and riots are in the ideological genetics of the left.

  12. BoilerUp! Stopped giving to PU (BS Nuclear Engineer, 1992) circa 1995. Daniels actions at Purdue have turned me completely around and I’ve re-opened the check book. He plays the long game and is positioning the University to be a survivor.

  13. “Chicago principles”? Shouldn’t they be called the American constitutional principles?

  14. I suggest use of “Perdue” in the title, while perfectly acceptable speech, is inappropriate for this story; them folk at Purdue ain’t chicken.

  15. Knowing how they operate, imagine the lack of civility during Daniel’s speech, I expect the anti-freedom crowd will attempt to drown out his voice while declaring their own right to free speech; this country is dying.
