Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

"The New York Times link to me yesterday [...] generated one-fifth of the traffic I normally get from a link from Small Dead Animals." - Kathy Shaidle

Sun news may be the first to pay the price but they have had to rely on their own ability to sell themselves for several years with no hint that their competition is required to do the same.
There is an interesting thing about Redneck News. In the US where people have to choose, Fox News outsells all the rest combined. The CRTC used new rules to justify kicking sand in the face of Sun News while CBC and CTV still cash the checks. That is one stupid thing Harper did.
This only happened because of Sun TV’s political positions* not because of the upcoming death of network TV (news). I haven’t read it yet but this week’s Maclean’s has Colby Cosh also arguing that it’s just the first to go down (judging from the headline and text knockout I did read).
None of the other network news channels that are all mandatory-carry will be allowed to die as long as they toe the line let alone CBC News and SRC even if they have to invent new income sources to pay for them like a UK-style TV tax.
* And may be to do with Peladeau too as the first linked commenter supposes.
Don’t understand how Sun TV’s political position had anything to do with its demise. It was the HRTC from the beginning who blocked it every way they could, and I learned on SDA that they are all Harper appointees.
If Sun News could have garnered a spot in one of the main tiers of cable packaging, they may have survived.
The CBC and CTV each have 3 slots in Tier 1. I’m using Shaw Calgary for the numbers and going by memory. Channels 2 thru 16 are Tier 1. You must buy that. You cannot skip it and buy Tier 2 or 3 separately.
Tier 2 and 3 carry the BBC,CNN, Headline news, Women’s channel, storage shows, etc.
They all get a cut of your cable fees whether you watch them or not.
Sun was put on channel 177 and you could only obtain it by purchasing the ‘news’ package. How can people judge your product if they don’t have access to it?
The deck was stacked against them right from the start. I’m surprised they lasted as long as they did.
The lib-left bureaucrats at the CRTC blocked it for political reasons. IMHO, if it was another lib-left outfit, it would have been okayed for mandatory carriage.
“The CRTC recently announced plans to ban simsub from the Super Bowl, but decided to retain it for other broadcasts after concluding that it generates $250 million in revenue per year for the Canadian system.”
What? The CRTC is nothing but a pirate that allows stealing Production copy-writ from US broadcasters. It is particularly annoying, to someone that spent a career in Network Productions, when the Canadian Network “Brands” (big CTV or CBC logo) the Broadcast as if is was their own production. They steal $250 million worth of Advertisement rights from the real Production Crews.
I am sure that BUD would be very happy to learn that their Ads are NOT seen by all the viewers of a sponsored production & the deletion is Government (CRTC) Approved..
Interesting fluff piece really.
When will the CRTC be shutdown?
Another parasites paradise where the base premise is :We the appointed ones, know better than you ignorant taxpayers, where and how you will get your news, information and entertainment.
They are so successful, thats why porn is everywhere?
A wonderland of useless spongers, doing great damage to the free market, while protecting their cronies who enjoy taxpayer funded government enforced monopolies.
As long as there is a CBC, the Conservative Party won’t see my money.
Well that comment sunk without a trace.
What were the fatal words?
The CRTC is another relic of the statist mindset.
It does nothing it is claimed to do, but protects another enclave of government protected crony monopoly schemes, our kleptocracy hard at work.
The board is just another trough to reward good friends and sellouts at.
More we are here to help, but you have to pay forever for the help you never wanted needed nor got.
Scrap the CRTC.
Big Brother Controled News or BBCN
Still trying to get it. Harper didn’t appoint conservatives when he had the chance?
