Eventually, everything we’re told to do will be proven to be wrong.
For years, we’ve heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
Did I say “wrong”? I meant “bullshit”.
But scientific support for that idea has been surprisingly meager…

Scientist know everything, even when they don’t. That’s why they use the phrase “Scientists now say… blah blah blah”.
That was a rather shallow article. Telling us to skip breakfast as part of some sort of fad dieting? Yeah. After sleeping for 8 hours your body needs to refuel. Try to teach a class full of students anything when they haven’t had breakfast. They will retain very little and nod off frequently. Besides, this NY Times article I would take with a grain of salt just like any garbage put out by the CBC.
Just reenforces the point that common sense is more important than what passes for scientific expertise.
If you are diabetic, breakfast is the most important meal — restores blood sugar levels, can’t take your Metformin on an empty stomach, etc.
Your first scotch of the morning is the most important scotch of the day.
The problem with “scientific studies” is that so often there is an agenda, bought and paid for, behind the study.
If global warming has taught us anything,it is that scientists have no more integrity than anyone else, whether it’s used car salesmen, lawyers, teachers,or peasants.
Every “study” that told us,back in the 70’s, such-and-such is good/bad for you,has been reversed, sometimes more than once, by more scientific studies.
When I was young, science and scientists were given SO much credibility, like doctors they were demigods, now they carry just slightly more weight than the average astrologer.
It’s sad, but selling your soul for funding and lying to cover up contrary data doesn’t do much for credibility.
I wonder if coffee enemas will ever make a comeback.
It’s not when you eat it’s what you eat that is the principle factor in weight loss. If you have a sugar laced bowl of cereal with skim milk, two toasts with jam and no butter along with a big glass of orange juice you have just spiked your blood sugar and increased your insulin levels. Welcome to the world of weight gain. No protein, no fat just a big old load of carbs.
A 2-year study in North Carolina found that 75% of all industrial accidents in the state happened to workers who had skipped breakfast.

It was a marketing slogan. So was “an apple a day…”

OMMAG nailed it. Real world experience trumps questionable scientific findings every time.
Yeah, I feel the same way about black tar heroin. :s
Breakfast IS the most important meal of the day.
It’s simple logic.
It’s the meal that breaks the fast.
If you don’t break the fast your body will take defensive measures when you eat, storing fat.
A marketing slogan is not necessarily wrong.
Cliches and stereotypes got that way by being true.
I pay absolutely zero attention to the results of nutritional studies.
I haven’t read the piece and I won’t.
We should be just as skeptical of so-called scientific studies that debunk long held folk wisdom as all other scientific studies.
Breakfast is over rated. I’ve been skipping it for years, long before it became a fad. Just do what feels comfortable for you. And if someone tells you breakfast is the most important meal of the day just tell them you eat breakfast after lunch.
Children who have a well-balanced breakfast before school are the only ones who throw up in gym class.
I fondly remember when Shakespeare realized that anybody with a silly walk or cause became or was quoted as being a scientist said The second thing we do, let’s kill all the phoney scientists.
Did science ever tell us that breakfast is the most important meal of the day? The article doesn’t say it and I don’t recall ever hearing it. I just figured “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” was an old wives tale, or some common sense thing based on no evidence. It sounds like an unscientific thing to say. Most important for what? What kind of breakfast?
You know. At one time I used to trust scientists. NOW,I treat them like the UN. Anything they say, within not so common sense,I do the exact opposite. Actually works out really well.
I am firmly convinced that there will eventually be a peer reviewed study showing that being an obese, chain smoking, drug addicted alcoholic will be the optimum lifestyle.
Perhaps Woody Allen was on the money…when he wrote “Sleeper’.
Right on rabbit. However, I rarely eat breakfast as it tends to cut into my sleepy time. But when I do, it’s bacon and Ex!
bah! Ms. McMillan is just exercising her remarkable talent for yellow journalism.
Priorities.
In “midnight run” Grodin says we’re starving and you’re buying cigarettes? Then deNiro tosses 52cents on the table and says order what you want.
Moral is different strokes, i guess.
Perhaps because many of the workers who skipped breakfast did so because they aren’t disciplined and organised enough to have breakfast foods in the house, and get up early enough to make and eat that meal. So it’s not the lack of a meal in the morning that makes them accident prone, it’s a correlation with the carelessness that gets them into accidents.
You’d have to observe a lot of workers to prove or disprove this idea, and remember not all who skip breakfast have accidents and part of that statistic quoted says 25% of the accidents involved workers who did have “the most important meal of the day.”
Personally I’m going to keep my breakfast habit. If it isn’t the most important meal of the day, at least it is still the most important meal of the morning.
Nonsense stat. Who do you think would skip breakfast more:
1) Someone with a hangover
2) someone full of Cheetos from the night before
3) Neither 1 or 2 above
Coffee is breakfast just add sugar and cream. Caffeine instead of soggy cereal, works for me.
Of course science is a continuous process of formulating and (re)testing hypotheses and revising conclusions and behaviours accordingly. But any real scientist — or anyone with an ounce of common sense, for that matter — will tell you that lack of absolute scientific certainty is no excuse for inaction either,
Yet according to your approach to “science”, everyone should stop eating and brushing their teeth altogether until incontrovertible “proof” is produced as to which meal of the day is most important and which brushing technique is most effective.
I’ll answer with the most logical conclusion given centuries of study: food is the most important meal of the day. And it is not when you eat it, but if you eat it that really matters.
I used to skip breakfast or just grab a slice of toast and jam with coffee.
Then I got married. New wife started feeding me breakfasts of bacon and eggs etc. Fellow workers told me my personality underwent a major improvement.
Probably had nothing to do with the night before.
