  4. These eight councillors have shown themselves to be completely ignorant of Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms and are devoid of common sense. Pattje is a bigot and his (their) recent back-pedalling (as well as Kipp, Anderson, Brennan, Ruttan, Johnstone, Greves and most of all Bestwick) is only a desperate attempt to pander for votes in November. Nanaimo voters will not forget this fiasco!

  5. loved Ezra’s summary. Pattje has his feelings hurt and is very sad-but only after Ezra’s campaign. Pattje’s own hateful resolution and the total disregard for proper protocol don’t seem to bother him much. All freedom loving Canadians owe Ezra a huge thank you.

    IOW councils are using composed of folks without a real job or a business…..with few exceptions.
    It appears that for Mckay, regardless his failings, has the Mayor’s job in the bag…if his is so minded…I bet he is.

I have had the “slippery slope” argument with liberals so many times but they can never see the unintended consequences of votes like this. Had the gay alliance one this battle it would be shutting down Christian businesses next. Followed by people getting pushed into box cars.
    I am amazed somebody Dutch who grew up in Holland during the German occupation would be part of this. Then again as my Dutch friends says “wooden shoes, wooden head, wouldn’t listen.”

    It needs to be remembered that the Liberals and NDP have political machines to get their people elected from the national level right down to the civic level.
    It’s long past time that conservatives did the same thing.

  11. What I found very amusing was that the fascist councillors tried to claim they didn’t say what they actually said. But it’s all on tape. Ezra should go through every word and then put the councillors, one by one, on the stand of public scrutiny as to which words they meant and which they didn’t. For them to even TRY to say their stupid resolution had nothing to do with religion (and specifically, Christianity) is positively Obamaesque!
    Oh….and the councillors who voted for the resolution should be required to pay the “undisclosed damages” out of their own pockets. Surely they must have either had legal advise on the matter prior to the vote and ignored it or didn’t bother to get legal advise. Either way, they breached their duty as councillors and should be forced personally to pay for it.

  14. I have to laugh when the default description of this behavior is fascism. This is classic socialist/communist behavior and I guess fascist. My inclination would be to describe it as socialist/progressive behavior. Responsibility for such things is conveniently side stepped by the fascist label.
    An interesting stat would be how many municipal seats are acclaimed each election. The NDP more than any other party uses municipal and regional district government as a stepping stone to senior government.
    Nanaimo’s recent by-law was based on the homophobia attack that all those who do not agree with that lifestyle are confronted with. I do not apologize for finding gay pride parades disgusting exhibitionism. I am not a practicing Christen. Not proud of that. The influence of Christians is grossly exaggerated as most churches are empty and many looking at closure. Life lived by the 10 Commandments is history for the vast majority.

  16. Your comment on the unfortunate down side of certain persons during the German Occupation of Holland noted.
    I would suppose that when a powerful force subjugates a sullen population, there are always exceptions.
    I did a little research on the Ann Frank tragedy. As all will know, this innocent little girl was hidden for eight months by brave Dutch citizens

    Someone betrayed the hiding place for 60 guilden. This was found to have been paid by the Dutch Green Police. They worked with the SS troops and Gestapo. I know in the Hollywood film, there were harsh Teutonic shouts as German troops smashed the doors with rifle butts.

    As wicked as it was, in actual fact the Germans just came in quietly and were informed Ann Frank’s father has served in the German Army in WW1.
    At first they were respectful, then the others moved in to the scene. She and her family died in the concentration camp.
    They have never found the scoundrel who betrayed the Franks. You may know all of this, but there seem to always the collaborators with a powerful occupier. This of any occupied nation.
    Often wonder what would have happened in my native England if…..

  17. I’m not Canadian though my grandparents were (or at least they came to the U.S. from Canada. And just to be clear my last name is McKay). My impression of Canadians is that they are proud of being “reasonable” people. Also forgiving. The interviews about the events in Nanaimo show that this results in passiveness. Pitch forks and burning in effigy followed by immediate recall is what I think should have happened.
    When I saw the first news about Nanaimo, I could easily have pictured that guy Pattje (the guy that introduced the resolution) in a black uniform with two lighting bolts on the hat and sleeve….. probably the accent helped that picture but not only the accent, also the cold dead eyes as well. If it looks like a Nazi and talks like a Nazi, it probably is a Nazi. And, in consideration of his stated position on GLBTs, possibly a closet gay like several of that goose stepping hierarchy were.
    A secret confidentiality agreement ….. and that’s okay with the people of Nanaiamo????!! Please! How are you going hide the payout when the city budget is published for the people to look over. Oh wait, that’s not going to happen either. And what’s a couple of million dollars anyway….. after all we said we were sorry for our “mistake” and rescinded it and your share was small anyway. (Yeh, you’re right, sorry I got so excited …….. do I appear reasonable still?).
    We need Government but government (any government) is not to be trusted ….. EVER!

  19. Delighted to hear that Ezra can ‘marshal the troops’ and shame Nanaimo City Council into behaving responsibly.
    Your assertion wrt to Christians being ‘on the outs’ of modern society are gravely misplaced. There are plenty of Christians who live their lives quietly and respectfully in service to others. Perhaps you are traveling in limited circles.
    As for the mayor’s bumbling apology, and so called hurtful allegation via Ezra, in respect of some aspects of National Socialism a few historical examples should suffice:
    Well for completeness perhaps certain members on Nanaimo City Council should educate themselves about Christians, no less Jews, who have also been tossed to the ‘government curb’. A couple examples:

  20. Of course they some of them are hateful. Just listen to Jim Kipp describing Christians as a criminal organization. There may be some elements of that in Rome, but most Canadian Christians are good people who try to live by the ten commandments … those are basic rules that help keep us civilized … not much more than that.
    Just consider how much Fred Pattje must hate Christians to bring forward the motion to allow HIM to be judge and jury for anyone who wants to rent the conference center for an event …. This motion allows city council to judge whether or not you are acceptable to THEM.
    George Anderson is just stupid … he is early 20s, no life experience, ,not particular skills or business experience … from high school to politics. idiot.
    The rest are silly pappagallos at best and hateful communists at worst.
    These fools have harmed the reputation of Nanaimo, and that will keep some investment as well as some people from wanting to come here.

    Fred Pattje is not a closet gay … he is openly gay and lives with his other man in Departure Bay area of Nanaimo. That’s fine … we don’t care what people do in their personal lives … so he enjoys a life style that would get him killed in many parts of the non christian world. Irony is lost on him.
    You would think he might want to extend the same basic courtesy to people who are ‘openly’ Christian. Again, the irony is lost on him.
    Anyway, he is losing sleep and that’s fine with me. He will lose his seat on council in November, but he still has his … mmm I think an air canada pension to enjoy …. I think he spent his working life as a clerk of some kind for Canada’s Airline. I could be wrong on that … but this guy ain’t no mental giant as we have some to see.
    This whole deal is far from over for these guys …. Ezra got a great show out of it, but there will be a lot of fall out to come.

  23. I hope many Christians file a Human Rights complaint against Jim Kipp. It was vile hatred against an identified religious group. He should experience the wrath of the CHRC just as Ezra and many others have felt.

    Councilman Kipp is just the worst. Whatever his personal feelings on Christianity, the indefensible and inflammatory statement that Christians were criminals should have had him ejected from the council.

  28. Fascism is a very close cousin of socialism and communism. In fact, if you were to really look closely you would find that the party in Canada today that is most closely aligned with fascism is the NDP.

  30. Hmmmm….so perhaps Pattje never really got any calls from anybody about this conference and maybe it was him and him alone that pulled this stunt. In any event, those councillors who voted for the resolution should be required to PERSONALLY pay the damages that they forced the City of Nanaimo to pay. They either didn’t listen to legal advice which would remove them from any protection as a result of their office or they chose to ignore it….which would remove them from any protection as a result of their office.

    Instead they beat around the bush, saying they were sorry that people were offended and sorry this got so much publicity, and that they don’t hold beliefs that — on May 5 at least — they clearly did.

  35. In Pattje’s defense (not that he deserves any kind of defense), Ezra interviewed him last night and he seemed very contrite. He seemed especially upset that people had characterized him as a Nazi — including some Dutch people who wrote to him. I think the incident has been a real eye-opener for him.

  36. I am so jealous that Canada has Ezra Levant. Sun News is killing it compared to the weak tea in the US. Investigative reporters in the US are still putting on their makeup and Ezra is wrapping it up.
    One thing puzzled me about the Dutchman. I have never seen a Dutchman make a decision without months and months of wrangling.

  37. This what an effective unbiased Media willing to go into the lions den can do. Ezra Canada’s pit bull for democracy scores another win. I think this is a positive story in we now have these bigots on the run. In this case the system did work.
    People responded with little urging to this miscarriage of Justice by these clearly collectivist Councillors except for one who stood against this cabal of proud bigots, who let power go to their heads..
