Al Qaeda (or whatever it calls itself) has a successful track record of taking over countries — and then losing power. Examples:
Algeria: (c. 1990) The fanatics won an election, the military refused to handover power and then brutally crushed the militants.
Afghanistan: Taliban/Al Qaeda driven out of power after Operation Enduring Freedom, 2001
Somalia: ICU takes power in 2006 but is forced out shortly after, following Ethiopian military intervention

Although I’ve never been to Somalia or Afghanistan, I have spent several years in Algeria which exists in a perpetual state of terror for any “moderate” or non Islamic persons in the country.

I had a long drawnout argument with this RizwanTerrorist Enabler on the last Boko Haram thread where Rizwan actually argued that Boko Haram was a cult and not Islamic.
Both Boko Haram and ‘Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s group are Salafi/Wahhabi Muslims, which Rizwan argued wasn’t a significant portion of Islam, despite being the State Religion of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia(where Mecca and Medina are located)
These Muslims, Boko Haram/ISIS/al Qaeda are all Salafi/Wahhabi groups and represent an Islamic Reformation where these adherents seek to return to the faith and methods of their blood-thirsty prophet Mohammad.
This prophet Mohammad was the perfect Muslim and all Muslims are urged in their religion to emulate him.
The problem is, Mohammad was a really bad, evil person, and to emulate him means to commit the sort of heinous acts that Boko Haram/ISIS/al Qaeda dedicatedly commit.
Any lukewarm Muslim can become rededicated to their religion, just as the Boston Marathon Bombers did, at any time.
It is Islam itself that poses a imminent threat.

I’ve said this before, Islam is a very brittle religion.
It’s more dependent on physical earthly things than spiritual religions like Christianity are. The 2001 dynamiting of the 6th century Bamiyan Buddhas by Mullah Omar’s Taliban were pure projection on their part. If we do to Islam what Islam does to other religions it would fold like a cheap tent.
Physical places, modes of dress, beards, special dietary rules, etc. these things all make Islam a brittle and easily destroyed religion if only it were attacked at these weak points.
A pilgrimage to Mecca, the Hajj, is one of the 6 Pillars on which Islam as a religion depends.
