Although the Soo Locks officially opened for the season March 25, no commercial ships have passed through the locks as they are still being escorted across Lake Superior by the Coast Guard Cutters Mackinaw and Katmai Bay. However, the Vessel Traffic Service operated out of Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., has issued a directive to close the upper St. Marys River to navigation because of heavy ice coverage.
It’s springtime on our calenders in these parts but with winter reluctant to leave,snow slow to melt, we may as well call it Sprinter, giving it a more accurate name might dummy down expectations as we await Big Al’s predictions.
I live on Lake Champlain. Where I live it froze over at least a month early. It is still frozen solid now. I have never seen the ice not honeycombed and loosening from the shore by the beginning of April. I can see them out my window fishing still with their four wheelers.
Our local lake is still ice packed and people were safely snowmobiling and ice fishing last week end no break up after the last 3 above zero days. I can’t remember ice on the lake this late and hardly remember snow this deep since I was a kid – started right after thanksgiving.
It was a hard winter – lost out buildings due to ice storms felling trees and snow collapsing the roofs. Global warming cultists who say this is because the earth is warming should really be put in a padded cell.
Well, today in sunny Southern Ontario the geese are sitting on the grass because the pond is frozen over, but they aren’t eating the grass because it’s all brown and busted. Zero new growth so far.
Ice was floating in the Grand River yesterday, a big improvement because last week it was frozen right across with big ice heaves all over the place.
The temperature spiked above 60f yesterday for a couple hours so I went for a boot on my bike, about one inch of forest soil has thawed. Made for some interesting turns I must say, my pants are now an interesting shade of mud from crashing all over the place.
If Global warming is a bad thing Nutters like Gore must be ecstatic to see so much ice forming and hanging on. We should soon see a redo film, Inconvenient Truth Revisited to predict we’ll freeze in the dark instead of frying.

Remember cold & frozen lakes are a symptom of AGW as is ice, wind, sunlight, rain, waves, water, earthquakes, sliding hillsides, cow & unicorn farts and everything else that is convenient.

Oh well, definitely higher temperatures all week, so we are told. One praises the bridge across the St Mary’s River. At one time the ferry was the means of crossing. Would be very hard to clear the river today.
I just flew to Toronto from out west over Lake Superior. The NW section, near Thunder Bay was totally blocked in. Even could see the ice breaker lane created to get to the lower section of the lake and SueStMarie where it is more open. But huge chunks of ice. Huge, almost the size of Regina type thing are still floating in the Lake.
lake Winnipeg ice is 4ft thick and 100% cover. Optimistic melting/flood predictions are so much BS.

I’ve been ice fishing every weekend as long as I can get on it, for 25 years.
My buddies and I are usually wading out through open water that melted against the shore to get up on the rotting main lake ice this time of year or usually most years we’re done at this point.
We’re still driving my Jeep out on Lk Simcoe and Lk Joseph.
Both of them have over three feet of ice and the shore is solid.
It’s been the best year for ice in Southern and Central Ontario I’ve ever seen, but for some reason the fish don’t seem to like it.
It’s been a tough year, fish wise, over all (with a few exceptions) by most reports.
Wish I could post the 15 lb Laker we caught last weekend…
Can’t wait for those massive burgs of spray ice breaking loose from the north shore of Superior. Looked at one last week it was a monster.. Entertaining in about early May.
Thank gawd for those carbon taxes and all that sequestering or it would be even worse. Hard to believe a .039% trace gas could produce all this evidence that the IPCC bases their reputation on with 95% certainty. They’ll probably wait another month or so before blaming global warming for the rapid melting of the ice in the great lakes and we’ll hear horror stories about shoreline flooding which could have been avoided if not for that damned carbon. I’m 95% certain that global warming will take the full blame for this ugly, cold and overly long winter. Tweaking their computer models as we speak. 95% certain.
