  11. Jim Flaherty is someone who deservedly commands rapt attention wherever he goes. Regardless of what the discontented or downright ignorant have to say, he has done a very good job in a damned tough time and can begin his well deserved retirement knowing he is respected and admired by those who understand how difficult his task really was. I can only hope we get another like him.

When Kim Campbell described herself as a “keynesian conservative” I suspected the conflicted concepts were a matter of Campbell’s oft over extended intellect – until I saw Flaherty run spending deficits in deep recessions. He was the best finance minister the opposition could ever ask for. Government is bigger than when he started.
    I don’t think this guy fits the mould of s responsible money manager let alone a conservative one – more like a free spending kleptocrat – and he has an appalling contempt for private property (google civil forfeiture and Canada for further reference).
    He’s a testament to Harper’s ( the economist) appalling lack of judgement in Cabmins.

    Because he’s the finance minister Harper deserves, but not the one Canada needs. So we’ll hate him. Because he deserves it. Because he’s not our hero. He’s a silent bumbler. A watchful incompetent. A terrible finance minister.
    Harper’s cult is like a pale sad version of Putin’s cult. The hero worship and delusion is all there it’s just so much…smaller. Puntin’s fanboys rally for wars of aggression and imperial grandeur, Harper’s fanboys rally for unsuccessful finance ministers.

    The income splitting measure in my view is long overdue…

    If ST has all the solutions, let him run for office and find out where the rubber hits the road. Guttersniping from the sidelines is such an admirable characteristic 🙁

  17. My view as well is that the income splitting proposal has caused JF to jump ship. JF has done a fine job as Minister of Finance and he is to be congratulated. JF was the man that got rid of the penny dreadful.

  24. Flaherty’s flip-flop on income trusts cost me at least $50,000. Up until that time I had supported the Conservative party with a financial contribution each and every year. Since that time, NADA. Screwing your supporters has its downside, Jim.

  30. In the fullness of time Minister Flaherty will come be seen as the greatest finance minister in Canadian history.
    He managed the Canadian economy through one of the most difficult eras since confederation – resisting pressures from the opposition while in minority and from most of the G20 to spend far more and to raise taxes.
    He oversaw the maintenance of the transfers to provinces without robbing from EI or cutting them to balance his budget to the detriment of theirs. (Paul Martin committed both sins)
    He set the reduction of discretionary spending in the federal civil service on a smooth path.
    Gst and other tax cuts, TFSIs and much more significantly PRPPs.
    And on and on.
    The cynical bleating from those on the left and some on the right are ignorant of either the political realities or the economic ones or both.
    We were very fortunate to have him as finance minister for as long as we did.
    His successor, (my top three guesses are clement, Findlay or Bernier. My preferred is Bernier – a fiscal conservative of the Randian type – he’s my preference for the next PM as well.) is going to have some very big shoes to fill.

    The banks and telcos were preparing to become income trusts and had they done so it would have destroyed productivity and innovation in this country.
    I have introduced cpc resolutions to reform income trusts to cover certain types of businesses where they are a good fit. Sheer fear of stirring up the hornets political nest of which you are a part has stifled them.

  32. He did a good job in tough times. He was a mature (in the good sense of the word) politician, and a genuine conservative.
    I believe,though, that the last year he was medically very unwell. If so, the full extent of it will eventually come out, I imagine.
    We will miss him, and I think that the CPC is going to have an impossible task to replace him.

    Over at the CBC the top comments are all debasing and derogatory towards him. That is business as usual for them, and a shame to all taxpayers. Perhaps the next finance minister could do a bit of micro-managing and clean out that cesspool.

    Clement has done an outstanding job in his current post, and has the past experience in the most important portfolios. I think he will be the successor. I can’t think of another choice. It’s true that the front bench is pretty thin for the CPC these days.

  37. I find it irritating that the MSM continues to think a “health” issue with a Conservative finance minister’s skin is worth reporting on. I mean I have had the occasional boil lanced and nobody from the NP does breathless reports on whether it was on my a$$ or my elbow and how it impacts my employment…
    But when whorehouse Jack was taking a run at prime minister in the last election – and in terminal stages whilst doing so – not a peep was heard from these dinosaurs.
    On the other hand, given what is shaping up in China, the European mess and the utterly insane, bank enabled housing bubble in this country with its accompanying $900 billion in tax-payer backed mortgage insurance, well, maybe Jim has just decided that he’s done enough and that he is tired of riding the tiger. Let someone else deal with it.

  40. Won’t miss him. Every time I get ripped off in a cash based transaction because he pandered to people who are to dumb to properly count change I think of Flaherty and the Conservative government.
    I want the penny back in my transactions, I hate getting ripped off. I hate how he has eroded our ability to use cash and exact change as a payment system to force everyone into electronic currencies.
    Everytime I see a useless Economic Action Plan pork barrel project I think about Flaherty isn’t a fiscal conservative and is a pork barreling loser politician.
    I’ve told the Conservative party for the last couple years I’m not giving up a dime in donations until he resigned.

  50. I don’t get the “I’m ripped off without my pennies” argument. Statistically, you stand a 50/50 chance of coming out ahead, or losing out. It’s a wash. If your purchase comes to $9.51 or $9.52 it rounds down to $9.50, and that makes up for the $9.53 or $9.54 rounding up to $9.55. If some clod can’t round properly, then let ’em know. Politely, of course…
