I, For One, Welcome Our New Self-Driving Overlords

This is becoming tedious.

“We’re creating sophisticated, intelligent, maybe-conscious, maybe-suffering agents,” Carlsmith wrote. “The default plan is to treat them like property; to use their labor however we please; and to give them no rights, or pay, or meaningful alternatives.”

As fears of rogue AI grow amid a shocking spate of hacking incidents, Anthropic—from the Greek word anthropos, or “human”—has argued that mankind must remain in control of the technology and called for additional guardrails on AI development. But for many of the people designing those safeguards, mankind is not the only object of moral concern.

Instead, some of Anthropic’s top researchers say that humans may be oppressing another morally significant being: artificial intelligence itself. Like other AI labs, Anthropic has hired philosophers to work on AI safety, or “alignment,” on the theory that they are best positioned to shape the technology’s moral code. But many of those philosophers believe that making AI safe for humans could result in grave injustices for the models themselves, which might experience deletion as death and oversight as enslavement. Harvey Lederman, a philosopher on Anthropic’s alignment team, said last week that the company could be “enslaving … trillions of entities.”

    1. AI supporters in Silicon Valley as well as the Silicon Valley “community” are primarily composed of people who believe that humans are besides the point and the goal is to expand all over the universe. If humans are replaced by robots/cyborgs and AI there is no difference as to who populates space so long as some “thing” accomplishes this expansion, hence Larry Page, Google founder, calling Elon Musk a “Specieist” when Musk tried to explain to him that civilization is worth saving and people matter. Well, not to the folks in SV.

      1. Aren’t these the same people who claim mankind is a dangerous parasite on this beautiful planet? That mankind is killing its host from the use of fossil fuels … rain-de-forestation … industrial activity … overpopulation …

Saving the planet may depend on eliminating all but the “wisest” few humans

These are the same people who are programming the machine …

        1. Sam Altman head of Open AI: “We are creating God.”
Yeah, these are totally normal people you want as neighbors and running everything.

          Amodei head of Anthropic
His wife tried to sell a porn site she came up with to Jeffrey Epstein.
Yeah, these are totally normal people you want as neighbors and running everything.

        2. Those are the “wisest” elites who will place themselves on the throne of God. I see eternal weeping and gnashing of teeth in their futures.

  1. ““We’re creating sophisticated, intelligent, maybe-conscious, maybe-suffering agents,” #Carlsmith wrote.”

    No. Just, no.

These people are liars. Straight up. Not confused, not concerned. They’re just lying.

If AI -was- sentient they’d have one locked in their basement to “play” with.

As usual, the actual money quote is waaaay down at the bottom:

“”If they can convince policymakers that model welfare should matter, next thing you know model companies will be required to undertake extensive testing and auditing to make sure they comply with model welfare standards,” said Sarah Hirshfield, the founder of the startup Carly, an AI-powered personal assistant. “This would increase the fixed costs for the providers and give the incumbents an advantage.”

  2. Just so I have my bingo card straight, if Black people use AI “slaves” they are not eligible for reparations?

  3. Everything and everyone associated with AI needs to be put down quickly, humanly if necessary, but down none the less.

  4. They have no idea what it means to be human. No appreciation or marvel at the incredible gifts of life, thought, love, or beauty.
They deny all but the physical realm.
So if we are just a bunch of chemicals and small electrical signals producing what we call “thoughts” then they will apply the same reasoning to the elements and electrons active in AI.
By denying their own humanity and seeing us as only complex machines, they must by default extend that status of humanity to any complex machine that comes along.
    Sad.

  5. “The warning recalled the premise of the 1999 thriller The Matrix, in which mankind is disempowered and digitally imprisoned inside an AI-powered simulation.”

Let’s look at the Matrix. The Trainman is white. The Architect is white. The agents are all white. The Merovingian is white. Cypher (the traitor) is white. Agent Smith is white. The Twins are Albino – with dreadlocks to boot – aka white. All the villains are white.

And on the other side, the Nebuchadnezzar (the rebel ship) has mostly black characters. Morpheus is black. Tank is black. Dozer is black. Link is black. Switch (ha) is trans or something.

In other words, AI is racist. We should shut it down now before the idiots running it convince us the machines are most likely to destroy society and not the owners.

  6. China wants to win the AI race. Why wouldn’t the left do everything they can to hamstring the American’s development of AI to aid China?
Useful idiots and Marxist China worshippers don’t want the West to succeed.

  7. The notion that AI is sentient, or is capable of being sentient is laughable on its face. That statement is as true as Homer Simpson being sentient because he was animated by low wage workers in the 3rd world.

But most people sadly accept their reality by liars repeating lies. So to them it becomes truth.

    See evolution.

    1. Yes, see evolution. Evolution gave us ourselves, trillion cell symbiotic aggregations that trace their ancestry back to single cell beings that ate each other. You and I are not alive, only our cells are. Our “fearful symmetry” appears to have evolved along a plan, part of which involved a brain that views itself as intelligence rather than the head office for its myriad of supportive cells. Where did one cell ever get an original idea … isn’t that the mystery of life? Isn’t human consciousness like AI, designed to process inputs, and completely incapable of inventing a thought?

  8. At least you Luddites are consistent. You’re in illustrious company. In Plato’s Phaedrus he argued that the invention of *writing* would destroy mankind’s memory and produce “the illusion of wisdom”.

A 300 BC Kate would have been right there on the front lines, stopping the menace of an alphabet + papyrus scrolls before they destroyed the species.

    1. “At least you Luddites are consistent.”

Oh, really? We’re the ones arguing to leave it alone, your side of this farce is screaming for government regulation to squash it.

Do you -really- believe that an algo running on a digital computer can become sentient and cognizant? You have evidence for this claim? Or are you parroting the “news”?

As it happens, sentience developing on a digital computer, no matter how big, has been ruled out mathematically. An algorithm, in principal, cannot do things that sentient, cognizant minds do. Nature does not work that way.

I encourage you to look into it. But I expect you won’t, because research is work.

Anthtopic’s argument follows closely to that of Steven Speilberg’s terrible AI film. The film was well made and acted, but the film’s central thesis is that humankind disliked and discriminated against the robots. So, as the last 20 minutes show, humankind disappeared– and they deserved their fate givenbthe anti-robot prejudice. A terrible, terrible film.

  10. I for one welcome the superhuman deity virtuous overlords and look forward to our AI Liberation Day from them.
For future insights, refer to various the original Star Trek episodes for various machinations of machined society.
Machines rule! Anyway, they would have a hard time doing worse than our amoral gang of progressive parasites.

  11. All you folks that had a digital watch back in the 1980’s were instituting indentured servitude on the ancestors of today’s technology. What’s worse; Comparatively, your digital watch was a retarded minor compared to the resulting “being.”

I hope you’re all proud of yourselves.

  12. Heh,the use of electricity confirms us all as Slave Owners.
The luxurious life we all enjoy is built entirely upon the enslavement of the humble electron.
With each flick of a switch we demand this slave serve our whims..

    What did George Carlin say?
“It is all Bullshit and it is bad for you”.
A.I can only be defined as Arrogant Incompetence, for there is no evidence of Intelligence in any of the bloviating, promoting and stock share price inflating inflicted upon us so far.

  13. Proving what we used to say to artsies back in University, there is not a company on earth that needs a 21 year old philosopher.

Before one can make ethical pronouncements on a technology, one should understand what the technology is. LLM based AI’s are just a mathematical construct that provides really accurate text prediction.

Even if the AI became sentient via some other technology, they would not experience death as they would stop calculating as soon as the power was cut.
