I remember making hunting knives in metalwork class, not to mention a 0.45 calibre black powder muzzle loader. The only thing you needed back then was a permission slip from your parents…and that was in CANADA!
Now you get served up a full on freak out show for a fish filleting knife; they are turning into such a bunch of weanies. Next they will be asserting a barbeque fork is weapon of mass chicken destruction; with PETA leading the charge.

Yes,I do. I grew up in an era ,and area, where most people worked at jobs that were physically hard, like farming, commercial fishing, trapping, logging,and there was a lot of common sense about.
But then, you had to have common sense to survive, no nanny to look after you if you f***ed up.
As to the kid in the link that was expelled for having a knife in his dad’s car, words fail me,almost. I know there is a visceral terror of guns in the empty-headed and I can understand that, they make a loud noise when you fire them, but a KNIFE!
I assume the staff at the school would faint dead away if they ever came into a commercial kitchen and saw all the meat cleavers and butcher’s knives.

Yes, I actually remember a time before government thought it better at running every aspect of our life; a time when we were free to live as we chose provided we didn’t steal, murder, destroy others’ property. In a way it is my misfortune, since it makes me very aware of the extent to which we have lost our traditional rights (real ones not the fake ones of today) and most basic freedom. Today most simply think what exists today is the norm without questioning.
Well, if people in certain positions of authority such as the position of parent were making judgements based on common sense, they wouldn’t have sent their son to a school when what he needs is to be getting a proper education.
This idiocy is being driven by the shift to an urban majority among voters. People in cities get most of what passes from education from watching way too much American TV. People in small communities and rural areas have natural reality in their back yard to educate them.
Common sense is now the least common of all senses.
You get this from teachers and mentally deficient “peace” officers. They have a zero tolerance policy so they don’t have to think. I don’t know why they are not expected to think and reason, probably because they can’t. See, these jobs are for people so dumb, it is either this or welfare. Giving them a little power makes them feel important.
I would suggest a lot of political action against both ht school board and the sheriff.
A friend of mine was living in Toronto a few years back and went to a Canadian Tire store to buy a fillet knife as she was heading up here (NW Ontario) to go fishing. The knives were locked up, she had to answer a whole lot of questions and they “walked” the knife up to the checkout. This is a grandmother here we are talking about. Common sense ain’t so common anymore.
And this is how the society slides into a police state.

Nobody will oppose it …. how can you oppose things in the name of safety.
There are ways that those that went to Harvard to learn how to talk sophistry, can wrap every damn thing into the veil of safety.
And one day the totalitarian academics will, as many today refer to “your betters”, tell you how to live, what to and what not to do, because they know. Not because they are wise only that they went to school for a long time. Knowledge does not come into consideration.
Fascism/socialism is on march …. in the name of safety.

I learned how to shoot in school from a Royal Canadian Navy commodore. Lee Enfield .22 rifles, the range was next to the gym. Nobody died.

When an official asks permission for something, your answer should always be NO! Because in this day and age, no matter how squeaky clean you are, you have something to hide.

Lev, you are 100% correct on what is going on, and society, including many so-called conservatives, are buying into this. Someday when they are arrested they will say, “There must be some mistake”. This drift toward totalitarianism seems unstoppable.
It is not Zero Tolerance, It is ZERO INTELLIGENCE.
Why do Principals and Superintendents need Doctoral Degrees? If they just go by a rule book with zero interpretation of the rules, they can be replaced by the average mental deficient.
Then again, I have worked with the mentally deficient and the highly educated doctors of education. The morons seemed to have more common sense, and were more likely to laugh, smile, and be polite in their interactions.
I carry a Spyderco Harpy pretty much everywhere I go, plus at least a multitool and occasionally a couple out of a large assortment of other blades.
When I was in high school, I always carried a knife in my pocket and no one gave a second thought to us bringing our rifles with us to go gopher shooting after school. This was in Calgary in 1968. Also remember walking out of the Bay in Calgary with a .22 rifle which I bought and not even a second glance from anyone.
The reason that stupidity like this goes unpunished is that people don’t stand up to it. I tell the safety Nazi’s what I think of them to their face when they try to implement some asinine policy for “safety” reasons. I’m never without at least one knife on my person, have a bayonet under the drivers seat of my jeep and like to have a knife within easy reach of wherever I sit in the house. The only zero tolerance policy I have is zero tolerance for zero tolerance policies.
The fears of the aichmophobic also seem to extend to carrying various tools on ones person and while I only have a Swiss army knife with me at all times, in my pack I keep multitools, wire cutters, needle nose pliers and an adjustable wrench. Carrying a screwdriver with me allowed me to disassemble the new door lock on my office door after the locksmith screwed up and I was locked in the office. Anyone who doesn’t carry a minimum set of tools with them is woefully unprepared.
