Stephen Harper calls out the leader of the Ukraine

Harper made his remarks to many of the 500 Canadians who will shortly depart for the Ukraine to be election monitors. It is one of the largest contingents of election observers Canada has ever deployed and the fifth time since 2004 Canada has sent observers to an election in the Ukraine.
There is a poll about Harper as a statesman.

  1. “It’s an understandable mistake, perhaps — until its independence in 1991, when Ukrainian leaders formally asked the world to drop the “the” and just refer to their country as “Ukraine,” “the Ukraine” was commonly used in English.”
You are correct, Ryan. Any commentary on the content of the link?

  2. That’s interesting, it is dated 2012, and yet it showed up in my online newspaper read today of the London Free Press.
    The poll is dated today.

  3. I was wondering how the PM got from Mexico to this speech venue so quickly. Incidentally, there are no definite or indefinite articles (the, a, an) in Russian or Ukrainian so dropping ‘the’ is entirely the proper way to refer to the country.

  4. “the” is no longer the proper way to refer to Ukraine, although many of the older Russian and Ukrainian history books I have use “the” when discussing Ukraine.
    Good for PM Harper.

  5. Check out he video Ukraine at Instapundit, and you’ll be astonished by the brutality the gov. is using against Ukrainians. Good for Harper, because the blood could run knee deep in Kiev without the Nobel Peace Prize winner in. White House saying a single word.

  6. So PM Harper has shown, rather than be a wallflower for democracy, he has shown he is a supporter of democracy.
This commonly referred to as ‘leadership’…

  7. Harper is a good statesman.
Compared to the mediocrities (Obama, Biden, Clinton and Kerry) in the US, Stephen Harper is a great statesman. We have not had any great statesmen with vision since Ronald Reagan.

  8. Yes, but is Prime Minister Harper good for the Jews?
This is after all the only correct measure of statesmanship.

  9. “Mr.president tear down this wall” – PM Stephan Harper
Canada’s greatest Primeminister wouldn’t soil his shoes for “the” Affermative Action President.

  10. “500 Canadians”??
Gawd almighty I hope Harper hand picked them. Any more than a few NDP or Liberals in the crowd and Ukraine will be back into Soviet era starvation before they can can say “more borsch please”.

  11. The difference between maturity and petulance or bigotry is often revealed in the casual remark from an individual. Please advise whether your comment is a result of immaturity or petulance or bigotry. Thank you

  12. Canada’s greatest Primeminister wouldn’t soil his shoes for “the” Affermative Action President.
Well yeah but that’s mostly because Laurier is dead.

  13. Candian prime Minister Stephen Harper truly is a STATESMAN!
And Canadian NDP leader THOMAS MULCAIR IS A COMMUNIST!

  14. So keeping in line with Harper, and Statesman, and all of that here is a poll that needs to go horribly wrong folks please vote we are getting hammered!!
http://www.sunnewsnetwork.ca/ scroll down a bit and it is on the right hand side of the page.
The poll is do you support the keystone xl pipeline? strongly approve ,approve, oppose or strongly oppose.
There are over 6000 votes already!! them ost I have seen on there website yet!

  15. The rioting in Ukraine has an interesting political perspective – The rioters do not have the popular support of the people. The government was duely elected – the issue seems to be the the people’s reluctance to join the EU more so than breaking with Russia. Makes you wonder who is enabling the rioters.

  16. For all the grammar nazis out there please remember within living memory are people who referred to Canada as ‘The Canadas’.

  17. @Mike Sr.,
The options you have so ungenerously allowed were a) immaturity b) petulance or c) bigotry.
    What about d) Tradishon?
What about the long historical standing of this question with which I sense you are not too unfamiliar yourself?
1,240,000 hits on Google. Please allow for the chance that not ALL the people who asked it were immature, petulant or bigoted.
And that is all I have on the matter. Shalom!

  18. As for the 14% who responded “no” to whether or not PMSH could be considered a great statesman, I would suggest that they are not being entirely honest. These Harper haters would have more accurately displayed their intelligence and knowledge of current events by checking off the last option.

  19. Joe >
“…please remember within living memory are people who referred to Canada as ‘The Canadas’.”
    That’s just outright racist!

  20. A lot of good liberal “Election monitors” do. Remember the army
of leftist twits who descended on Nicaragua a few decades back?
You could hardly walk a block without running into Jimmy Carter
or some other socialist dimwit. Just like the Rwandan genocide
and Central African Republic today, the left just turned a blind
    eye to election violence.
If you do not have a clearly defined sense of morality, it is easy
to witness one sided election violence, genocide, government repression and terrorism, and declare that it is time to “End the
cycle of violence.” When the Israelis engage in terrorism, this term will no longer offend me.
In Rwanda, one side was killing the other by the hundreds of
thousands. The official U.N. position was that it could not
chose sides! They stood by and watched the bloodbath, just like
they ignore the terrorist attacks against Israel.
When U.N. peacekeepers fire on the aggressors in Rwanda or Kosovo,
I will be impressed! If Jimmy Carter and the small army of
Democrat operatives actually condemn election violence, I will
    respect them!
Send all the Canadians you can muster to the Ukraine. If they
do not have the balls to report the truth, what good have you
done? In the end, nobody will remember the victims!
Are you Canucks or men? If you are men, you will protect
the rights of the victimized be they tribal Africans, Israelis,
Nicaraguan citizens, or victims of Muslim terrorism.
