I have to admit, I was wondering what the difference was between the Canadian government’s revocation of tax-exempt status for Greenpeace, and stuff like this.
Then it hit me: Greenpeace et al are being penalized for having misrepresented the nature and degree of their political focus. The 501(c)(4)s are being penalized for having told the truth about theirs.

Like Mark Steyn, I’ve lived both in Canada and the U.S. (although not in the UK)and this is a contrast fairly easy to make: Americans tend to fear and hate the IRS in a way that outsiders may not comprehend. Nark has written about that more than once.

Not long ago the IRS was appologizing. It was a mistake. Unintended. Now it’s to hell with you, we’e got the power, our great leader supports us and we can do what we want. We even get bonuses. Forward.
I forget what blog I was reading yesterday for a comparison to Nixon. That particular writer took pains to point out that when Nixon tried to get the IRS to go after his enemies, the IRS told him to pound sand. The IRS took its role as a non-political agency seriously, and defended itself from political interference. That’s part of the ‘deal’ under which Americans accept the IRS’s existence: it can be a horrible, awful, pain to deal with, but at least it is immune to political corruption, because such an agency infested with politics would be outright totalitarian in nature.
Well here we are today, and the IRS rolled over like a good doggie and did exactly what Obama told it to do. It didn’t even try to say “No” when Obama came calling. It’s become thoroughly corrupted by politics, specifically Democrat politics.
The ‘deal’ is therefore off. Americans would not only be justified in erasing the IRS from existence, but should do so expeditiously. However, I doubt Americans are up to the task these days. Too much bother. There’s some new Kardashian story on the news, they’d rather watch that.

I was reading this in anopther context earlier on Drudge. Apparently lots of Dems are feeling vulnerable in the next election, and they’re pushing the IRS to clamp down on Conservative 501-C3s.
Resorting to this type of naked force says to me the Dems are running scared. These guys are not morons, they can read the tea leaves better than we can.

As with its modern crown colonies its greatest success was teaching the people to police themselves, and we do it to great effect.

We were audited by Revenue Canada a few years back. It took quite a few long phone calls, photocopies of documents, heated exchanges and talks with RevCan officials and finally my statement that I would go to my MP about it, as well as my absolute refusal to do any more work on it, before we received two letters from RevCan admitting that we were right. It had nothing to do with politics, but gov’t bureaucrats just assume they are right. Here’s the difference, though, I’ve never had the idea that *I* work for the gov’t. The mandate of the gov’t needs to be spelled out loud and clear. They work for US.
