  10. For a lot of Canuks it’s a toss-up of hating Americans or Torontonians more. For some of us the difference is insignificant. Toronto is the capital for American wannabees living in Canada.

  11. Being from Toronto in a room of Canadians from other cities is like being a white man in a room full of femi-Nazis. They’re going to spend half the time criticizing you, and the other half making fun of you, while all the time, they wish they were you.
    Torontonians take it all with a smile and a shrug. Yes, the city has problems.. too much traffic, not enough roads, a dysfunctional city government (before, during, and after Rob Ford), Mike Layton and Olivia Chow, and of course, no decent ski hill in 200 miles. But we are serene in the knowledge that Canada is the best country in the world to live in, and Toronto is the best city in Canada.
    Have at us, my friends. Some of the comments are even funny.

  13. I hate to burst your bubble Kevin B, but some of us don’t give Toronto a second thought, unless it is to wistfully remember that once upon a time Toronto used to be a pretty decent city. Now, not so much. Sorry.

    Once upon a time I lived in Toronto. For ten years. Then I left, and lived many places. Now I live in rural Ontario down a gravel road. My nearest neighbor is a quarter mile away. Yesterday my driveway had a drift five feet deep along half its length. Its a long driveway. Took an hour to bust it with the snow blower.
    Every time I’m forced to go to Toronto for the day I remember when I lived there before, and I give thanks I don’t have to live there any more. Snowdrift and all. Cities suck.
    But as cities go, Toronto sucks less than New York, about the same as Minneapolis/St. Paul MN, and way more than Phoenix AZ. Liberals have not yet had time to ruin Phoenix.

    Me too. A redneck Alberta farm boy who went off to seek fame and fortune. The first thing that happened is that I got lost on the Don Valley Parkway when I arrived. It was still not finished at the time.
    Anyway, it did work out even though I did not become famous nor amass a fortune while there. But I got a start in the mainframe computer business while there and managed an all expense paid transfer back to Calgary back in 1974.
    To be honest, I didn’t mind living there and even enjoyed it at times. But I always missed the west, and am glad to be back here. Have traveled back there many times over the years on business until about 1990 when the mainframe era ended.

    One of my kids and I went to Alberta last year to check it out and drive around. There is too much Alberta! On and on it goes and nothing but little scrub trees etc. Funny place.
    Crossing the border back into the states at Bonners Ferry ID was like walking into a room and turning on the lights. So jolly…and people would actually speak to you there.
    Why are Canadians so……cautious………? Or something?

Kevin, I can’t blame for you lashing out when you’re being picked on like this, but of the many ludicrous beliefs Torontonians harbour, the idea that everyone hates them is one of the silliest, and the idea that anyone envies them is silliest of all. It’s understandable, because Torontonians hate pretty much everybody, and it’s natural to imagine that therefore it must be mutual, but it doesn’t really work like that.
    Yes, I know Torontonians don’t actually hate everybody all the time. But they are willing to hate anybody the television tells them to hate, and sooner or later that covers everybody. (It’s been a while now since you hated Manitoba, and the Maritimes and BC and Newfoundland are off the list for now, but it’s only a matter of time before they come back; and the hatred of Alberta, and Quebec, and the Americans, never goes away.) I expect that a lot of Ontarians really do hate Toronto, and I can’t blame them. It can’t be fun being ruled by a government controlled by people who despise you. You’d be surprised at how many Manitobans hate Winnipeg, and how many British Columbians hate Vancouver, for the same reason. Rest assured, envy has nothing to do with it, in any of these cases.
    People outside Ontario tend not to think of Toronto at all. It simply isn’t an important place. A lot of people resent the CBC, as a Toronto civic institution funded as if it were national. A lot of people work for Toronto businesses and find it really hard to put up with the ignorance and stupidity at head office. But most people recognize Toronto as a nice enough place of no real interest.

  24. Perhaps you have that Taronta accent?
    I have driven all over Western Canada, have not found people cautious, just polite and nonintrusive.
    From the Torontonians I have worked with, perhaps these are not natural values for the city.
    Also the west have history, we do remember.
    Freezing in the dark is not as just a fate for Eastern Canada, as forced to pay market prices for western products.
    Having been to Toronto a couple of times, it is just another city.
    I would happily trade most of Canada south of the 49th parallel for Alaska.

  25. “Lashing out?” Buddy, you’ve got to work on that over-sensitivity. And reading all the other comments, if you don’t believe that there are a whole lotta Canucks who hate the Big Smoke, you need to work on your comprehension skills.
    The New York Yankees have won 40 AL pennants and 27 World Series. The Chicago Cubs, since 1900, have won 10 pennants and 2 World Series, and haven’t won anything since 1945. Everybody hates the Yankees. Nobody hates the Cubs.
