Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

“But the triumphalism among some — like Hanna Rosin in her book, The End of Men, about women’s gains — seems startlingly premature.”
Gee, now I know what to get my wife for Christmas, sorry, the Festive Season.
Feminism, and all it’s associated BS, goes out the window as soon as a woman needs something heavy moved, a flat tire changed, or a tight jar opened.
Poor little girls like Camille Paglia et al have had their day, now they’re just boring old nags…
Maybe if they grew up they would be more interesting?
I actually took a couple of women’s studies courses at York U years ago, it was not a good idea, but anyhow, I will never read their whining crap again.
No man could ever be this annoying!

I had occasion to pick up my wife at a “women’s issues” office where she went for a weigh in with a group she belonged to They sublet a room). She didn’t take the time to look at the brochures and pamphlets on display. I had the time and did. If the word “men” had been replaced with “Jews” or “blacks” the place would have been shut down for disseminating hate literature. Paglia has a point and I don’t think Philanthropist read the article.
we just have to talk

Actually, I get the sense that the Paglia is saying the man hating feminists got it wrong.
It’s a good read.
But then I’m a REAL Woman, and I have always appreciated our differences.
well ain’t that just it, celebrating the differences between gender.
its when one wants to be “like” the other that the trouble starts.
like y/n? (snark off eh)
Paglia and Captain Capitalism should go have a coffee.
Why is it that the women that want to rule the world always start in the most successful countries? Those that have already shown what having men in charge can do?
Why don’t they start their march to world domination with Iran, for example, or Sudan? perhaps then they can build their success without having to smash the the old models to pieces. As they’re already in pieces.
?
Philanthropist: Contrary to your personal opinion of Camille Paglia, she is a successful academic, an informative and entertaining writer, a thoughtful critic on contemporary culture, and a brilliant polemicist.
In this essay she argues that men are the builders of civilization. Do you disagree with that assertion?
To say that Paglia is a boring old nag is a thoughtless statement and the product of a lazy and uncomprehending mind.
Mea culpa. You guys are right, I didn’t read the article. And now thinking back, I do recall that Paglia wasn’t a ‘sister’ and the ‘professors’ at York didn’t really like her. I’ll read the article as penance.
But I still like my ‘poor little girls’ comment when it’s applied to your run-of-the-mill radical feminist. I think it’s funny, and when I used that comment to describe a couple of complaining female lawyers – my feminist girlfriend at the time lost her friggin’ mind, she was ready to kill – so I know it’s effective.
I made it to 35 seconds.
Good column, now I remember why the ‘sisters’ didn’t like her!
I agree, as I actually read the whole article and based on this article she is not a flaming man hater, but realizes that each gender has a role even if not apparent at this time in this society in North America. She says that men will be needed in their ancient traditional role after something hits the fan.
The link to the “Munk Debate” is interesting. IMHO the existing generation of female CEO’s are “cover” for failing companies. The street has a hands-off for female or black CEO’s, but they don’t last long.
The Democrats have some total idiot female members, just count the number of incompetent members of Obama’s administration.
Ever since I began actually reading Camille Paglia’s columns, I’ve considered her a refreshing anomaly among the ranks of North American feminists. She’s a conceptual thinker and a rational person. She clearly saw the road the Gloria Steinem clones were on, and how bad their agenda was for families. She was clear-headed and gutsy enough to publicly re-think the issue of ‘abortion’
Being a single young male, what drives me up the wall is that I can’t find a woman my age who’s interested in having children. Give it 50 years and radical feminism will be extinct, as women who refuse to have kids write themselves and their decrepit ideology from the history books.
The only time I can get a woman to stop laughing at me is when I show her my combat wounds,
some of them still giggle when I limp off, holding my ass..
Seems that feminism and misandry are large city perversions. Where I live, the natural division of labor between men and women is implicit and there is a refreshing absence of metrosexuals and girly-men. Most of the women who live out in the country are quite self-sufficient, shoot well and still remain women. Likely none of them have ever read any feminist literature or felt they were being discriminated against.
Given that male and female brains are wired quite differently there are always going to be some areas where women have almost zero presence. When I think of well known hackers I can come up with only a couple of women who I’d give that classification to whereas hundreds of male hackers come immediately to mind. I’ve yet to find a woman who will spend as much time in front of a computer coding as I do and I’m well past my extreme hacking phase now. Men seem to have far more ability to focus on one topic to the exclusion of everything else whereas women seem to be unwilling to put the same degree of mental effort into what most consider to be a not very important task. Women appear to be better at multitasking and are able to hold down a job, raise kids, do the laundry, do some shopping on the way home whereas I can’t even get around to mailing a letter when I’m stuck at the hospital working.
Men work in groups quite differently with focus on the job and paying little attention to individual idiosyncracy’s other than catalogueing them in a mental table of every group members strengths and weaknesses. Some of the worst infighting I’ve ever seen has been in all female groups who seem very intolerant of things men couldn’t care less about. Women seem to value order far higher than most men (well there are beta males who are rule obsessed but I prefer to work in a group of aggressive alpha males who have little regard for trivialities like rules).
To any logical person, it’s a no-brainer that combining a man with a woman gives one the benefits of both types of thinking. That’s assuming one finds a woman who doesn’t have the delusion that she’s really a man and resents being born into the wrong body.
Camille Paglia writes good short articles but I’ve found her books inpenetrable and boring and never managed to read more than a few pages of Sexual Personae. When she writes a short piece it’s good and hopefully she’ll stick to that.
Camilla Paglia is one of those rarities on the left of the modern political spectrum: someone who speaks their mind without all the tedious baggage of political correctness attached to every utterance.
The Left generally prefers sneering and preening over substantive, readable commentary these days, and is essentially devoid of all humour (one more reason the Mark Steyns and P.J. O’Rourkes of this world reign supreme).
There are far too few lively left-leaning commentators these days;* Paglia – and the late Chris Hitchens – were the exception to this sorry state of affairs.
* Exhibit A: the soporific Rick Salutin.
Bet you can’t read more than one paragraph of any column of his without nodding off.
Misandry and misogyny exist in small towns and big cities-lived in both. I’m by no means a feminist, nor am I about to pretend that as a women I am not able able to focus, and that only skills I innately have as a female is to do laundry and raise children. I will not succumb to denying my skills and abilities, or buy into self-hate because I possess competence in areas other than the stereotypical which might make a male feel less like a male. Men and women share just as many similarities as they do differences, despite the differences in wiring. When it comes to reproducing and forming a family unit, we are meant to be complementary which means both sexes need to show self control in areas where their differences in wiring will be detrimental to the family unit as a whole-individuals with entitlement issues and/or narcissists are generally not able to do so.
As for leadership, there are plenty of competent female leaders-Margret Thatcher comes to mind. Kings and Queens have both historically been remembered for being competent, cruel and/or corrupt.
The bashing on both sides is responsible for huge numbers of talented and skilled people throughout history being held back from exercising their God given talents and skills on the basis of sex. I don’t think that a women being able to open a jar on her own means she’s a butch feminist, or that a man who likes to sew or do laundry is weak, yet it’s equally ludicrous to think that a women can keep up with men in a combat zone. Although men are unable to breast feed, it doesn’t mean that a man can’t be a competent nurturing parent to young children, but he will need to work on being a lighter sleeper.
It’s true that men are constantly being portrayed as stupid and bigoted in the media which is completely wrong, unfair and damaging to the family unit. As far as women raising children goes, most women would rather be at home with their children at least until they are all in school, but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t capable or competent in other areas, it simply means they know they can do the job better than a daycare worker or a nanny and that these years go by quickly and there is no way to get them back once they’re gone-it’s difficult to not have a bond with a child whom you carried for nine months and then just hand that child over to someone else, even though working at a job or career is much easier than staying at home with young children. Men are also capable and competent of staying at home with their young children-it boils down to style, about the only task a man cannot do is breast feed, and he will need to learn how to become a light sleeper! Boils down to mutual respect for our differences and similarities.
Paul,
If you are looking for a family oriented lady as a prospect for a future mate, maybe you are looking in the wrong places?
It’s funny how you guys rail on radical Muslims, yet have so much in common with them.
Well said. Thank you.
Apparently at least one poster wishes that all women were like Alexandra Kollontai.
i highly recommend ‘mail order brides’
much has been written about how American women are undatable.
As usual, Camile Paglia hits the bullseye. As usual, if anyone but gay/female/lefty Camile Paglia had written this, that person would be pilloried in the MSM.
I think Camile Paglia’s biggest problem these days is that she holds the goal of equality and mutual respect between men and women as sacred, whereas the rest of the Left uses them as tactics and disposes of them when they become momentarily inconvenient.
