  1. I am amazed that the CBC was able to report it without references to Duffy or Ford.
Bravo Zulu to Search & Rescue crew.

    former 440 T&R Sqn

  2. I can’t watch it. I fear an loathe rotorcraft and regard them as work of the Devil. I know for a fact you have to sell your soul to him just to fly them!
And – if that weren’t black enough magic for ya – that damned V22 Osprey is an even BIGGER affront to the Aviation Gods.
The powers of Goodness and Niceness end in aviation with the fixed wing aircraft, people. Rotorcraft should only be deployed under the direst and blackest of circumstance, and live sacrifices should be made to the gods upon the safe return of the pilot and passengers.

  3. Stranded above a fire not dire enough Glenfilthie?
My first few helicopter rides were in NE BC. Ex Vietnam pilot, his backwards and sideways lease exits played to the max. My tolerance after a long drinking night in ft. St. John . Gives my hands at tremble now 33 years later

  4. Hey I sandblasted and painted that water tower 30 years ago, spent almost my entire summer vacation away from school living in a cheap motel on Princess Street doing it.
I blasted the inside of the riser in one night and never left the bosons chair till it was done.
Great crew we had on that job.

  5. Worked offshore east coast for three years. Flew on the sikorsky S-61’s and Super Pumas. Nothing bit respect for those pilots who got us home even on some pretty foggy days. I kind of agree with Glenfilthie though…I always felt like we were pushing our luck with those contraptions…

  6. Our “Mil Spec” guys are the best!! Great to see our guys doing what I wouldn’t have the nerves to do.

  7. Yeah well, I am a survivor of the “helicopter war”….and I probably would balk at riding an Osprey….
That said, I wuz watchin’ that cyclic jockey hold that mix-master steady in the gusts…..
Watch the body of the helo tilt and twist while hold position….that’s skill.

  8. I wonder if the hoist cable had a guillotine, like the Navy Sea King. The RCN never used the Sea king for rescue (in my time) unless the auto firing mechanism was disabled. Hovering without any forward or reverse/sideways movement is “very” hard.
We (NBC) used Helicopters for the Olympic Marathon race. They served as microwave repeaters (from camera’s on golf carts) and they could never maintain that kind of hover.
    Well done Canada!

  9. my daughter was less than a block away when the fire erupted. scared the bejeezus out of her she had our twin grandchildren with her.

  10. Welcome back sasquatch, mon ami. And question for you. Since drones can be piloted remotely, how practical is it to remove the cockpits from helos and fighters and have a kid with a joystick in Nevada control them in non-permissive environments?

  11. I am not sufficiently knowledgeable to really respond to your query.
That said it appears that remotely operated drones are effective….it seems that a computer and some sensors are smaller and lighter than a pilot and the necessary life support.
There seem to be limitations such as the drone that allegedly crashed in Iran. But then, allegedly, a much more advanced craft crashed at Roswell……….

  12. You could probably pilot a Search and Rescue helicopter remotely, but you’d have a heck of a time convincing SAR Techs and Flt Engineers to join the crew.
