Australia’s Public Broadcaster is as Corrupt as Canada’s Public Broadcaster

Looks like conservative Aussies face pretty much the same conundrum as conservative Canadians: Their tax dollars fund a heavily biased broadcaster that supports all views except theirs.

It is galling that taxes paid by all Australians go towards funding that Lefty/Green echo-chamber, which caters for a small urban elite, staffed with inner-city Ultimo types who couldn’t run a chook raffle. Privately owned media organisations stand or fall on their output, witness the enduring success of News Corp, and the rapid decline of Fairfax, as it too panders to the latte-sipping, sandal-wearing intelligentsia, and in the process ignores the vast majority of Australians. The Age astonishingly endorses Labor for the election tomorrow – as one commentator pointed out, after asylum disasters, NBN, massive debt, waste, dysfunctional leadership, knifings, in-fighting, Craig Thomson and Peter Slipper, what would it take for them not to endorse Labor?

But the ABC is paid for by all of us, and it should be representative of the views of all Australians, not just a mouthpiece for the Left. It is probable that a Coalition government will be elected tomorrow, sweeping away six years of Labor incompetence. Yet you wouldn’t believe it listening to the ABC this morning, with the majority of stories either puff pieces for Rudd and Labor, or criticism of the Coalition and Abbott. Maybe they realise that the clock is ticking, time is running out, so they have to make the most of it, like the last gasp of the Roman Empire.

  1. Funny thing, the Conservatives have had a majority for how long?
    And what has changed at the CBC? Oh yeah, nothing……..and didn’t James Moore was unequivocal last year about the CBC? SHort memories……
    Conservatives are CINOs…………..they’ve sold out. I know, Justin is an airhead, and hairface is a nut, but……the conservatives are losing the base because they are filling the mushy middle.

  2. Sigh. Again. Left,Right,Middle,or in between. Does not matter.They are politicians,by definition,narssistic,pschypothaic,control freaks.Hold a gun(figuratively) to a politicians head,and they will follow the people.Give them the gun,well,look in your own back yard.

  3. Don’t get too excited about Abbot. He wants to force ultra-generous maternity leave on Australians, making women employees a liability. He’s about as likely to do anything about the ABC as Harper is regarding the CBC ie nada. I haven’t heard anything regarding relaxing Oz’s awful gun control. Canada is freer I think. The only think Abbot is good for is getting rid of mining taxes and staying out of the anti-AGW scam.

  4. Hopefully Australia will be the first commonwealth country to do the right thing and seize operations of the tax funded broadcaster.
    Dismantle the CBC and promote Youtube as a tool for every Canadian to be a voice of this country.

  5. I love the CBC because I get to wake up every morning being told I am an asshole. If the CBC ever stopped that, I would be lost!!!!

  6. There seems to be a trend.
    BBC is biased toward the left, study finds
    The BBC is twice as likely to cover left-wing policy proposals than those that are right-wing, a study has found.

    Lord Patten and other senior members of the BBC have been accused of systematically misleading Parliament over controversial severance deals for executives.

  7. Just a note to the Harper “has abandoned conservative thinking” crowd. Don’t know if you are all are really just pulling my leg or really do not see any change in the direction of social issues.
    The Federal government of even a 35,000,000 people ship which has been chugging along for many years feeding the populist “give me more” takes a big push to slow down and then stop the momentum.
    Do you think the changes in Foreign Affairs staffing and acceptance of new directives would happen easily? Hey folks! if you are not happy with the image change in the world from a group of “do not offend” to “right is right”, then something happened to the best conservative blog in Canada and in North America.
    If your significant other has not said at least one over the last fifteen years “something has to be done with the letting bad people roam the street” and” mickey mouse sentencing for significant hurt to ordinary people is not right”. Then you are really young.
    If you feel it does not make you a bad person to own a rifle and do not know what changed, then you do not know anyone who has one. If you do not see how proper dragging of feet prevented all of Canada from being the Green Pit of Despair Ontario now is you are not checking your electricity bills.
    Yep! remembering what was, to what has been taking place falls on the side of satisfaction in this house. Just thinking and recognizing change continues to be in the air. Cheers

  8. The Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star’s parent companies own a large percentage of the Canadian Press. The CBC is the largest customer of the CP. They regularly feature CP employees as ‘analysts’ and such. They all scratch each others backs and back up each others opinions.
    The CBC’s ‘Power and Politics’ show presents the Liberal POV first and foremost. Their political panels are a joke,usually 3 or 4 against one,sometimes angry Ian opposes the others,but not without throwing a barb at the Conservatives.
    Here is a good example of the crowd that the CBC draws. Yesterday’s ‘Ballot Box’ question was;
    ” Do you agree with the federal government’s decision to stay out of Syria?”
    Here are the results:Yes: 46% No: 53%.
    More CBC’ers would rather send our troops into Syria than agree with a sound Conservative decision.When you have an audience that is so hateful towards anything Conservative it is a reflection of your news coverage and slant. But,the CBC will never see that.

  9. ” Do you agree with the federal government’s decision to stay out of Syria?”
    Just another mindless and meaningless survey aimed at the idiots who rely on the CBC for coverage of current events. How many surveyed understood the question? How many know what is going on in Syria? And how many even know where Syria is?

  10. When tax dollars are used to pay for it, it will mostly attract those oxygen thieves who think they are entitled to live their lives through other people’s resources.
    The CBC and most institutions with “public” in front of their names or descriptions should be privatized yesterday.

  11. Welcome back Las! You have been away I guess. I have been expressing my thoughts on the CBC as both a small liberal and particularly a Liberal mouth piece for quite a while on this blog and elsewhere.
    Possibly a second read of my comment will focus on the anti-Harper drive by smears in the comments. Just like the drive by smears on the CBC; and the other “discrete” Liberal running dogs.
    By the way Las; where have you been and why did you pick this particular thread to come for?
    Cheers;

  12. Commies/socialists/statists and propaganda have an affinity like stink on poop. Seems natural that a public funded broadcast megaphone would be infiltrated by this debased creed.
    That is the parallel I see demonstrably displayed by both ABC/CBC/BBC. All the state broadcasters with huge public budgets and low accountability distort events and sanitize news in a politically left bias. To a large degree the Commonwealth nations are now politically propagandized as badly or worse than Russians were in the cold war era.
    Oddly enough, Russia’s RT routinely has Canadians/Americans/Brits on air relaying news and opinion that will never pass the political filters in those nation’s corrupt corporate media. Of course we cannot get RT on our controlled cable system but you can always get the unfiltered news streaming on the internet (as long as they allow it to exist)
    You don’t like funding political propaganda masquerading as public broadcasting? – stop complaining and mobilize like lefty has – or sit and take it. If only 10% of Canadians who either detest CBC’s malignant leftist spew or resent paying for CBC’s huge operating budget, were to mobilize with the intent of pressuring government to defund it, it’d be dead in a year.

  13. Occam;
    It will take an effort as you suggest. When I talked to the Minister of State the other night I was blown away by his attitude towards the CBC. ‘We govern all the people of Canada. Your attitude towards the CBC is not that of the Maratime Canada where they only watch and listen to CBC.’ John Duncan is a old Reformer who IMHO has drank the Ottawa koolaid.
    CBC determine their own broadcast standards and since they pretty much parallel CTV, Global and most print media the truth will not will out. Duncan even made some sarcastic remarks about Levant. I might agree that SUN TV does go overboard on some stories but Ezra Levant needs an Order of Canada for some of the work he has done uncovering the truth about who influences decision making in this country.

  14. One might almost suspect LASsie of being in favour of public broadcasters and their statist agenda.
    Mike Sr. Is 100% correct. It takes a lot of braking power applied slowly to counter the Liberal momentum built up over the last seventy or so years. The CPC fired a whole lot of bureaucrats this year, making it the first year in quite a while that the civil service didn’t add bodies. I always wish for more, and demand more, but that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate what I get.
    Why do you think the CBC hates the guy so hard? He’s their natural enemy. If anyone is going to trim their sails, its going to be Stevie.

  15. I have a co-worker who has his morning radio-alarm clock set to CBC. He does this because the the wheezing of leftist tinged blarney by Marcy Marcusa (Winnipeg morning announcer) forces him to jump out of bed, slam the alarm off, and start his day (no pressing of the snooze for fear of hearing her voice again).

  16. Shaku_bert!!! Perhaps the best put-down of the CBC I have ever heard.
    Seriously, if TSN/Sportsnet really do go after HNIC at the next contract renewal, its loss may sink the CBC without the Feds having to do anything.
    More seriously, PMSH made a fairly innocuous comment about regular Canadians not being interested in an elitist television gala that wound up contributing to the 2008 election being a minority. The CBC is a hot button with our political enemies. They’d love it to become a diversion from larger issues.

  17. If anyone here thinks that closing down the CBC will result in saner more informed ‘news gathering’ they haven’t watched CTV or Global lately. The obtuse and crazy nature of our old line media results from the attitudes of those putting the product together. All their acquaintances, friends, and family work for the public sector(have you checked out the size of our public sector) so naturally their bias tilts in the ‘Big Government Good’ direction.

  18. nold, as I happens I have -not- seen CTV or Glowball lately. Thats because I don’t have TV in my house. Those networks are slowly being driven out of business by people like myself who are just ignoring them.
    CBC is the only one that can’t be ignored into receivership. I think defunding the CBC would go a long way toward cleaning up Canadian media generally.

  19. The CPC fired a whole lot of bureaucrats this year,
    No they didn’t.
    making it the first year in quite a while that the civil service didn’t add bodies.
    After they expanded the civil service by double-digits. Wow. Woopdy-doo.
    Reversing government growth is done quickly or not at all. Harper has no inclination to do so and will never, ever pare back the CBC. God you people suck. You’re just a pathetic personality cult.

  20. “making it the first year in quite a while that the civil service didn’t add bodies.”
    Before something can be reversed it has to come to a stop. First step achieved.

  21. I don’t cheer much when the Conservatives do the things I elected them to follow through on – scrap the registry, ditch Sec. 13 – because, that’s simply their job. It’s also their job to give us the property rights protections that they promised us back in the 2005 – 2006 campaign. And I’ll hound them and jeer them until they follow through on that.
    Now, as for the CBC, getting rid of that nest of slugs wasn’t a promise – but would it ever be one heck of a bonus….and I’d clap like hell if they ever decided to do away with the parasites, but I’m not counting on it.
    But I can’t think of one valid reason why anyone would endure a giant deerfly – constantly buzzing around, biting, carrying poisons – when the torment could be so easily stopped.

  22. Oh Oh Phantom you hurt the feelings of LASsie. Now he won’t come back again, at least under this troll name. My kids had a dog named lassie, wasn’t a runner, but it drooled a lot.
    Cheers;

  23. Agreed, oh, and don’t forget getting rid of the soviet style Wheat Board. I’m sure that we missed a few other cleanup jobs.
    Any state mandated and sponsored bureaucracy become corrupt in some way unless there is house cleaning from the top in some way. The CBC has never been cleaned up, financially or politically. Even PM Harper is afraid to touch it, most likely as Duncan mentioned, because the CBC is sacred to many easterners and to all on the left.
    Duncan is not the only one that has been Ottawashed. All the CINOs and bureaucrats have a way of turning good people to the left.

  24. “…because the CBC is sacred to many easterners and to all on the left…”
    Well, I can’t speak for the rural Maritimes, or even PQ, but with the possible exception of HN in Canada, the CBC is a non-entity in rural Ontario.
    CBC is near and dear to diminishing numbers of self-styled academics and pseudo-socialists who tend to live in the older areas of our large cities, and, more often than not, derive their incomes from tax-payer dollars.
    I would suspect that their concentration per capita in any jurisdiction in Canada rises and falls in direct proportion to the public sector vs. private sector employment rates in that area.
    The Montreal suburb of Westmount, having suffered generations of Liberal inbreeding, likely has the highest PPM concentration of CBC tuners in the country.
