Yup, great idea, new taxes. PMSH is right that it is a “job killing tax”. Cutting the GST put more money in our pockets which we almost always turn around and spend, thus creating more jobs. Lower taxes also put more cash in my pocket which I can then either spend, save, or whatever I want to do with it. Seems like economics is not the “rocket science” economists want us to believe. Simple logic is more useful IMHO.
Stop the insanity! AGW has been debunked, along with that other crazy theory, that Islam is the ‘Religion of Peace’.
Why don’t progressives ever clue in?
Perhaps the Star Phoenix meant to run this two and a half weeks ago, on April 1.
There is no space for reader comments under the editorial. I guess the Star-Phoenix doesn’t want any sass from we lesser mortals. Cowards.
And the carbon tax in BC is one of several reasons why the BC Liberals are going to suffer a *massive* defeat in the upcoming election.
If you dress yourself up to look like the NDP, act like the NDP, speak like the NDP, make policy that is scarcely any different than the NDP, then Joe Voter will figure he/she might as well vote for the real deal and not your party.
The thought of the NDP getting elected in BC is enough to make my stomach churn, but it the end the Libs have moved so close to the NDP it will make little difference who wins.
Indeed if you are thinking long term, the best thing that could happen would be an annihilation of the Libs so that something better could rise up out of the ashes.
So according to the Star-Phoenix, government taking money through taxation and then spending it results in economic stimulus but leaving the money in the hands of the taxpayers (also known as consumers) does not. They’ve drunk the Keynesian Kool-Aid and are forever blind to what actually works.
Now Nicholas Stern is warning we’re in a “carbon bubble” with fossil fuels overpriced. Amazing how these folks move from one scam scare to another every time they’re shown to be the rent seeking charlatans they are.
What sort of eejit still subscribes to a Postmedia paper anyway? Where I live they’ve been giving the local Postmedia rag away to homeowners this past week, they’re so desperate for subscribers.
Mine goes in the bin, except for the coupons. At least I know those aren’t a pack of lies.
TJ, I am voting Conservative. They don’t have a hope, but I can’t place a vote for the B.C. Liberals anymore. I had hoped that by the time Clark released her platform, she would have done away with the carbon tax. It would have been very helpful for her. But that didn’t happen. Forced myself to vote for them since we moved here, to hold back the socialist hordes. But it’s basically like voting the socialist hordes in, anyway. Four years of utter and complete NDP hell should turn a few hearts for the next vote. Hopefully.
I am thinking there are many conservatives like me who are voting their conscience this time. This famous coalition of liberals and conservatives I keep hearing about in the B.C. Liberal party is breaking down and basically is no more.
My son will be voting in his first election in May. He said no way in hell will he mark his first X for a Liberal (or a Green or NDP) Heh. I taught him well.
should projects such as Keystone die over the carbon issue
The fate of Keystone has nothing to do with carbon and everything to do with fundraising, otherwise it would have been approved long ago. The surest way to dry up the money is to tick off the Hollywood crowd.
Either these editors live in an information vacuum or they active participants in the disinfo war – in any event it is immoral to make a living charging customers for this kind of dreck.
Soccermom I am with you. The Cons are getting my vote even though I know the odds are thin. At least I will sleep well on election night.
The Liberals and NDP have become completely indistinguishable.
ahhh the Star-Phoenix, pining for the good old days when the NDP were in power and running the province’s economy into the ground.
Since the NDP has imploded, they figure it is their job, their legacy, their duty to carry on with useless, destructive socialist feel good policies to ruin the lives of the province’s hard working private citizens.
I cancelled my subscription to the StarPhoenix many years ago when I had finally had my fill of its left-leaning crap. Even when the free edition arrives on Sundays, I immediately toss it in the blue bin. Any newspaper that runs a column by Murray Mandryk is suitable for bird cage liner only.
You’d think they would be welcoming a bit of global warming in Saskatoon right about now.
As much as I despise the dippers, the lieberals in bc are just dippers in disguise. On the Island at least, a lot of Albertans are moving in and skewing the vote to the right but without a true conservative party to vote for, hold their nose and vote lieberal. I just can’t do that anymore. The hippies and greenies and commies in this province make the most noise and therefore seem to be the ruling ideology. I think we are alot more conservative as a province and country than the politicians seem to think. They keep pandering to the lefty noise only trying to be reelected and hanging on to power. Trying to get out of the way and letting the economy create jobs and prosperity just doesn’t seem to enter their puny little brains. They have to interfere in every tiny little aspect of our lives because they truly believe that they know better. They are almost all just petty little bureaucratic pinheads who have no real life experience to speak of and have grown to believe their own bullshit..
See Rick, we kept voting for the B.C. Liberals because of the socialist hordes on the other side. But that also gave the Liberals the idea that we agreed with what they stood for, for example, the carbon tax. They figured they could get away with just about anything they wanted.
Can’t do it anymore.
I am a true right winger. The NDP in BC is saying that they will increase the carbon tax so if you hate the carbon tax hit vote liberal to maintain the status quo. The carbon tax is a true comsumption tax and for that reason I like the carbon tax. Consumption taxes are the best form of taxes as income taxes are the worst form.
Yes, of course, taxing plant food is a great idea if only we could gst the plants to pay it themselves. Otherwise it is a very stupid idea.
tranio “The carbon tax is a true comsumption tax and for that reason I like the carbon tax. ” Problem is, consumption tax via a carbon tax includes food and heating. Most people do not think of food consumption as a choice. The other BIG issue is that when the tax is applied to an energy source, public institutions like schools and hospitals are also hit with the increased costs. The carbon tax will trigger increased income and property taxes. And I do think that poor people are the ones who will suffer most with such a tax, despite claims that the tax would also be used to alleviate its impact for the poor. That will not happen over the long term. The tax will increase inflation and we will all be worse off.
The Editorial Board of the Star Phoenix need to look up the word,”sophistry” in their dictionary.
It is SO frustrating to read idiocy couched in such reasonable sounding phrases. But at that Paper I’d bet that’s the order of the day. They seem to believe that everything good comes from government and their regulation and taxation.
Pravda on the Prairies?
and how!
From the article: “But increasingly Canada has been warned that it must come up with a predictable domestic carbon pricing strategy, or have one imposed by its trading partners. ”
What nonsense. Whoever buys Canadian exports are doing so because of the benefits to them. Not even the lunatic EU has imposed such a regime on any country. And Canada is far too important a market, and source of imports for any EU bureaucrat, or TOTUS, to get this imposed.
If all the Star Phoenix staff have the brains of this editorial writer, nothing will be lost by canceling your subscription.
“I am a true right winger”
Anyone who advocates voting to tax a .038% trace gas essential for life belongs in Liz May’s Camp. A true “right” winger can see through the scam and nonsense that a carbon tax is. The biggest scam in history.
tranio…..just take a wee gander at Lesser Britain and the PIIGS to see how great a carbon tax is. Mind you, they are following the Useless Nations Agenda 21 by freezing the elderly pensioners to death.
Carbon Tax?
Would all those people who voted for Stephan Dion and the Liberals
please raise their hand…yes, both of you.
It’s also a wealth redistribution scheme. Lower income people get a carbon tax rebate every few months here in B.C. I also heard that
Dix is planning to expand the carbon tax base. Whatever type of hell that means…
I’ll have to take out a subscription.
After that…I can cancel it.
We’ve reached a point where taxing the stuff people exhale is mainstream. Allahu Ackbar!
Cancelled. Been ready to for some time, this was the proverbial straw.
Typical out of touch with reality Journalists.
They never meet a policy that destroys economies they didn’t like. The sooner these papers die the better. For our Nation along with mankind in general. Stupid people run amok with stupid ancient ideas, long proved wrong.
“The editorial…(is)…unsigned because (it does)not necessarily represent the personal views of the writers. The position taken (was)arrived at through discussion among the members of the newspaper’s editorial board”
So no one even has the b@lls to put their name on this tripe?
Apparently the Star Phoenix’s “editorial board” has the collective IQ of a houseplant.
(With apologies to several of the more sentient houseplants.)
Like others, I held my nose last election, despite the hated carbon tax, and voted for Gordo, of course, keep the stupid socialists out.
Then they dropped the HST bomb days after the election, and that was all she wrote. We get to the point of credibility, in who you say you are and what you will and won’t do. It was reprehensible.
Xty and the rest of her gang have no credibility left. No ethics, and no moral principles, like typical Liberals. Her commercials are a joke, she criticizes everything that SHE is and has done, but pretends its the NDP that will do it (of course they will, but Xty is every bit as guilty of financial and ethical malfeasance).
I too, by default, will likely vote conservative, despite it being relatively disorganized and fringy, but better than the immoral Liberals, or the Horde. Maybe even an indy. Don’t know if spoiling my ballot is effective, but NOTA is actually my first choice.
Soccermom, TJ, the Liberals indeed, need a thorough purging and expunging, and the only way that can happen is, unfortunately, for the Horde to win, by a landslide. (Good grief!)
Dan,there are a lot of people who will vote Conservative rather than Liberal crooks or NDP commies,so they might surprise us and win a few seats.
It would upset the apple carts of both the other Parties if one of them had a minority government instead of carte blanche to screw us over whichever way they please.
DanBC and others I totally agree. I’ve held my nose too long with the BC Liberals. At some point you just have to say enough is enough. It has been one thing after another with them. At this point there is nothing of substance to distinguish them from the NDP. I mean for **crying out loud** the Liberals announced this week millions of taxpayer dollars to go toward a 100 mile diet campaign!
The Conservatives will get my vote. I know it won’t change the outcome of the election and may indeed only lead to more seats for the NDP. The Cons are not organized to win. But I want the BC Liberals wiped off the map, gone, finished, done, never to be seen again. Liberals annihilated and the NDP in full and total control – it may be the catalyst that leads to the birth of a new, better party. This is the only good that can come out of this election at this point.
Don, if it ended up with Libs and Cons holding the balance of power that might not be too bad. But unfortunately the Cons are not running a strong campaign. They are missing good opportunities to win more votes, their policy is weak and ambiguous, etc. So the NDP will almost certainly end up with a majority.
Since an NDP majority is the likely outcome, I think the best thing would be if the Liberals were decimated completely. They don’t deserve anything else. Get rid of them entirely. Not one single Liberal MP deserves another red cent of my taxes.
Indeed, they are little different from the Dips, and I point that out in other firums to the extremists who talk about the “rightwing” Liberals. Anything but, and I show the many examples of leftwing policy and programs the FIbs have carried out.
If we only had a true rightwing government, we would not have seen the carbon tax, the placating of native issues, and other regulatory, nannystate policy that the Fibs are guilty of.
The Winnipeg Free Press is the Pravda of the Prairies.
The Star Kleenex is a good enough name.
“Canada has been warned that it must come up with a predictable domestic carbon pricing strategy, or have one imposed by its trading partners”
Really? Who warned Canada and when?
What is a predictable domestic carbon pricing strategy? The one in force in Europe, the one the Europeans are now backing away from has been estimated to have cost the European economy over 250 billion.
Exactly when and how would a country allow its domestic policies to be set by lawmakers outside its borders? Yes, that would go down well with the electorate, wouldn’t it?
A carbon tax might be a good idea, as long as we start with a tax of $1 per newspaper, and reduce income tax equally. After all, the trees that die would absorb carbon dioxide, and forestry, pulp and paper mills, printing plants, and newspaper distribution burn huge amounts of fossil fuels. Go green, and get your news electronically.
In the upcoming BC election, I’m voting NOTA unless there’s a Libertarian candidate in my riding. A “carbon tax” is one of the most asinine statist policies that I’ve seen in my lifetime and any individual who supports this should be booted out of politics permanently. The commies are making lack of access to medical care one of their issues where I live and I might just start telling my patients who feel lucky to have a GP that if the commies get elected that there’s a good chance I’ll be moving out of BC. I normally avoid discussing politics with patients but, considering this will potentially impact their health care, I’ll probably end up letting them know what might happen if they vote for commie swine.
Unfortunately, the BC CINO party has as many totalitarian aspects to their platform as the other statist parties in BC and I have no intention for voting for statists. Right now the only solution I can see is to build a fence around the Vancouver area (fortunately there’s the Fraser river to assist in the isolation process) and have the area of BC to the east of that fence join up with Alberta. It will be easier to deal with the Albertan moonbats than the totally brainwashed population of Vancouver and Vancouver island.
If I’m lucky, one of the commie candidates might come to the hospital to talk to physicians and the first thing I can ask them is whether I’m going to get the money stolen from me by the last commie government. They proved themselves to be a true kleptocracy back then and I did keep track of the amount of theft from my billings and such an encounter would be interesting.

No alternative in sight, just scams that benefit the well-connected,in place of real efforts to find alternative sources of energy.
