  1. Excellent Video, thanks for posting it Kate. Everything this man says about Australia applies to Canada (and now USA), IMO.
    The Captain’s “Enjoy the Decline” keeps making more and more sense.

  2. Some years ago I kept every single receipt for every single purchase for a year ….. I calculated all the provincial & federal taxes , GST , hidden taxes on beer and gas and cigs , home and property taxes , recycling fees , CPP , EI deductions , govt permits , fishing licenses etc …… the total taxes came to 54% of my income.
    And I was in a modest income bracket $29k …. drive a fuel efficient car …. grew my own veggies … own a small older home with no mortgage …. very little extravagance in my lifestyle.

  3. If I had a nickel for every time I’ve given that speech to some recalcitrant relative or lefty or random clod on the street, I’d be able to bail out the national debt.
    Its a great video, don’t get me wrong, but we have progressed well past the place where this argument is anything more than academic. People have been drinking this bath water since the 1930s, and it -works-.
    The answer seems to be a deeper cut at this modern culture of ours, a return to a moral state where a young man wouldn’t dare live in his mom’s house for fear of the mockery from his peers. Where public assistance is for people who are actually crippled, because the shame of an able person being on welfare would be profound.
    Time to become a lot less tolerant, my friends.

Arnie, there are also fees for certificates and licenses one must have for specific jobs, such as keeping a class one driver’s license, medical reports, first aid tickets, paying for criminal record checks, the cost of courses to upgrade skills and the added costs of commuting with the carbon tax in place. Under the BC Liberals schools and hospitals, etc. have to pay carbon offsets. That is money for nothing. The oppressive role of government is now driving the underground economy.

  6. Govt taxes behaviour that it wishes to discourage.
    So their attitude to working hard, creating wealth, intelligent investment and playing by society’s rules are reflected in the tax code.
    Message, all those things are bad.
    I keep snickering, for 20 years, productivity as measured by the Feds has fallen in Canada.
    Governments at all levels have continued to pile on the fees, taxes and regulation, then bemoan the fact their income continues to shrink, as the cost of living rises to absorb those costs and taxpayers reduce production.
    Successive federal governments have made it clear, if citizens accumulate wealth, government will steal it.
    None of our governments have any respect for contracts or law.
    Estate tax, income trust busting, RRSP modifications.
    So the message from progressive taxes has sunk into the psy of working canadians, the harder you work the less you will be allowed to keep, if you buy land govt will tax you , if you save depreciation of our money will destroy you.
    If you need healthcare you can wait, wait and wait some more .
    If you are a small business, you will spend more time on compliance, regulatory idiocy,government intrusion and collecting taxes without pay, than you will on chargeable hours.
    We are going to become a whole lot smarter once we realize how broke we really are, govt exists to serve itself, taxpayers only defence against the cancer of bureaucracy is hostile vigilance .
    Government is a poor semi necessary servant, but a vile, arrogant and clueless master.
    Arnie makes a good point, I did the same experiment in 1993. The final insult was realizing I netted $2.49/hr for overtime hours.Anyone noticed how hard it is to get skilled workers to work steady overtime?
    Today Canada can not afford the civil service we have, every fourth worker is employed by the taxpayer, so the taxes paid by 3 people must support a government employee, their office and pensions for those that have retired.
    Do the math, $ Trillion debt for 34 million people is sustainable economics? How many taxpayers are there today? 15 -20 million? 10 -12 million?
    Government employees are not tax payers. They are simply lied to about their pay rate, it comes from same pocket, they are a cost to taxpayers not contributors to public finances.
    Yet so many government employees will rant and rave over this point. Where does the money come from?
    We have had life soft and easy, and in soft times people let things slide, whats a little corruption, incompetence and dishonesty when you are rich?
    Those amongst us who knew poverty, hard times and hunger have been told it will never happen again and endless platitudes.
    For government its been a great run, nearly 60 years of living off of the taxpayer, steadily growing take and ever diminishing public wealth.
    And it is possible that the loony left is about to bring us, Pierre The Idiot part 2.
    Socialism is wonderful, until you run out of people to steal from.
    Productivity will continue to fall in Canada, until the beast is starved.

  7. Folks who acquire marketable skills do not need to work for ‘the man’. That is to say, the government or any large corporation where you are a number and you are monitored. With hands-on type skills you can be king, especially at this time when almost know one knows how to fix anything or how to use a tool.
    That is what the underground economy is comprised of … folks with skills working for cash or barter. It is the only way anyone can avoid the blood suckers who will keep you on a tread mill that they control.
    What our governments are doing at this time … is committing social and economic suicide. Live ruined by welfare and government hand-outs and meddling in personal lives. Economy ruined by over-regulation and over-taxation. We will have to fight for our lives if we are not to die along with them. They won’t ever stop because they don’t know how. They are locked into a cycle that would cost them their careers to stop … they won’t do that. It is not in their nature. Most people who seek office are emotionally or mentally defective to begin with …. who in their right mind would want to go through that process anyway.
    Just look at the mess they are making and tell me that these are smart well-adjucsted folks who are working in our best interest. Try to justify the utter stupidity of their never-ending proposals and rules and laws. In NYC the mayor is now governing soda pop. You can still eat two large pizzas by yourself, but you will need to wash it down with successive containers of coke that can hold no more than 16 oz. Insane doesn’t begin to cover that. Banning anything is a fools game, but then we are talking about fools.
    It’s time for anyone with a brain to wise up and get prepared for what is coming. Frank Zappa did a great parody on this thought in his first LP back the mid 60s. The song was called “It can’t happen here”. The point is that, it can and will and it has already started.
    I know it’s pretty much pointless to ever bother posting a comment on this topic, but it does feel good to vent once in awhile.

  8. Every country in the world can use a “Topher” or two. Until the general population get the message we will continue down the black hole of debt. Google “Detriot Slums” and see where 50 years of kool-aid drinkers will lead you. We had all better get our shit together and each of us become more self reliant because as the “Topher” indicated ALL welfare systems eventually fail. Since I am elderly and am nearing the end of the ruler I really don’t give a shit……but for my grandkids I am very concerned as we should all be.

  9. “An Obama nation is an abomination”. This aphorism (mine) is applied to the USA but is applicable to all governments that drive their taxpayers to choose between financial oblivion or tax avoidance.

In Ontario we have seen McGuinty and his Liberals destroy our province from energy through health to education, every facet is rife with lies, incredible waste of resources and our taxes by the billions, interference in the market place such that 500,000 manufacturing jobs were lost and bankrupting the province that it may never recover from. Yet we now have a premier, Kathleen Wynne, who firmly believes he did a great job and will continue this debacle.
    If an election were held today I believe the Liberals would still get at least 30% of the votes cast. As this excellent video clearly shows there is a huge and growing number of our citizens that depend on the state to provide their sustenance and don’t give a damn where it comes from!
    The politicians like McGuinty can plainly ruin the economy and affect the livelihood of millions yet they just walk away from the mess and care not the slightest about the mess they left, in fact they firmly believe they had, as Dwight Duncan said, done a good job and he as the finance minister has the absolute nerve to warn us about government spending is too high and we had better take steps to control it!

  12. There are some who might say I’m advocating tax avoidance or even tax evasion here…
    A fine line, I know. Fertile fields for accountants. (No offense intended, hopefully none taken)
    Seems to me that if two or more consenting parties enter into an exchange of goods or services eschewing any mention of the value thereof in state-sponsored currency (explicit or implicit) that taxes would not be due or payable. Problems may well arise if they value their products/services stated in an accepted notional way – i.e., in state denominated dollars, even if no currency was ever physically or virtually exchanged.
    An alternative, accepted and trusted community-based currency exchange might serve this purpose quite nicely, albeit not for long, given central bankers’ and government’s penchant for control.
    As it is taxes extorted by various levels of governments are successive/cumulative. (i.e., taxes imposed upon taxes) to the point where the prices we pay for goods and/or services now have an aggregate 50% tax component, substantially more for so-called sin taxes.
    Another thought – As a contrarian, I’m the first to acknowledge that all money/currency is in fact credit or debt – i.e., a promise to pay. Problems arise when counter parties default or when the system itself is debased.
    Just thinking…
