In December 2005, the chief and council of Chemawawin First Nation had drained almost all of the $400,000 Chemawawin Resource Trust Fund to support representatives on the Cedar Lake Resource Management Board, Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) prairie director Colin Craig revealed Wednesday.
Band members sent a letter to Craig last month to inform him of the situation.
“Manitoba Hydro was very clear in the trust fund agreement — the trustees were forbidden from spending the $400,000 initial capital investment,” Craig wrote in a blog post addressed to Manitoba Hydro CEO Scott Thomson.
“The band was only to use interest from the fund.”

400 grand buys alot of Oxycontin.
Can I be the first to say RACIST!?
WHAT INTEREST?
That’s cause they are children of the forest and above any responsibility to the souless white monsters who have stolen their land. The centuries of skinning Indians, passing their hides off in Europe as shaved beaver pelts, must end.
Why is the outrage mostly towards the gov’t for not detecting it? I understand they should have, but we’re almost in don’t-kick-a-dog-for-pissing-on-a-fire-hydrant territory here. The outrage should be 80% at the band council, 5% for gov’t not detecting it, and 15% for gov’t giving a trust fund to the band with instructions of “don’t spend it please!”.
And what will be the consequences of this? Jail time? A stern talking to? Nothing? Or my guess, give them more money to spend? This has been going on all across Canada for a long time. There are never any repercussions so they keep doing it.
I am a victim. You are a victim, too. Were you weaned from breast feeding too soon? Too late? Never breast fed? Perhaps you are one of the oppressed minority who have no breast feeding emotional trauma. You, somehow, are a victim.
As victim of a racist society, how do you get aboard the gravy train? You could manage a 400k trust fund; use the interest to salve the emotional scars of breast feeding (too much, too little, not at all, all the time, whatever).
These injuns have a good thing going. Ask not about justice, but figure out how to get in on the teat.
But, but, but, residential schools didn’t teach bookkeeping and such whitey stuff..
BDFT,you asked: ” And what will be the consequences of this. Jail time? A stern talking to? Nothing? Or my guess, give them more money to spend? ”
You left out the healing circle.
Hey! Let’s not get all uptight.
Nothing that a bit of sweetgrass and a healing circle won’t fix.
Time for the Chief to book a hotel in Ottawa and see if that island is still available.
This sort of action is why indians need to keep the overblown nonsense about long closed residential schools going. Its sole value is an unassailable claim that lack of familial support drove them to:
Alcohol& drug abuse
Child abuse
Lack of initiative
poor life choices
mismanagement of business.
Therefore;
It is all whities fault.
Relax folks, please move on; there is nothing to see here. Well, at least nothing will happen and this will get swept under the rug just like all the rest of the first nations malfeasance does.
But … but … with such low interest rates of 2% that would only allow $8000 (or less) per year to be squandered , which obviously was not enough for the chiefs.
It cost Manitoba Hydro 400,000 to find out that the First Nations
“word” is not worth spit. That is a cheap leason if they now shut down all fraudulent money flow.
If government money is not protected; a class action lawsuit would be a slam dunk.. Against Big pockets (Gov’t) & the First Nations…
They spent the trust in 2005??? What is dumber than dumb or put
in reality, Who is NOT a gangster
JMHO
What interest? Seems to me they were VERY interested in squandering the 400 Gs.
“The band was only to use interest from the fund.”
I’m sure the band took an interest in the fund and used it. Pretty simple injun to anyone.
